Love Your Enemies: Would a Christian Burn a Qur’an?

by John and Ruth Greene

burn-quranToday, as we write to you, uproar exists concerning the possibility of burning the Muslim holy book known as the Qur’an. This is supposedly in response to threats that a few American Christians were going to burn copies of their holy book to honor the yearly anniversary of the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001. In our humble estimation, burning of the Qur’an has been grossly exaggerated by the media, for if these occurrences were not widely advertised, they would have little importance. Material things are destroyed every day. However, in the grand scheme of things, materialism and physical symbolism based on diverging cultural views bears little positive fruit, but instead brings on fear, anger and jealousy. (“Disciples of Messiah and Spiritual Fruit“; “Spiritual Fruit & Renewing Your Mind“; “Christianity: A Crisis in Prayer & Spirit“)

“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.” – Luke 6:27-28, NKJV

As a result of a real lack of love, this media debate has taken on a life of its own. On one hand, there exists what seems to be an international groundswell among some Muslims that sometimes includes violence, as well as burning items symbolizing the objects of their scorn. On the other hand, a few Christians are up in arms, threatening to act in kind. Which was first? Does it matter? Tensions are mounting as the day of September 11 arrives. (“Overcoming Fear during Tough Times“; “The Need to Keep Spiritually Clean“; “What Is Washing By The Word?“)

So how would a genuine Christian act under these circumstances? Rumor has it that first-century disciples burned books. Should you? This display of great repentance came about in the early ministry of the Apostle Paul. Context is especially important, so we will begin by starting in Acts 19:1:

foundation-of-faith-300“And it happened, in the time Apollos was in Corinth, Paul was passing through the higher parts to come to Ephesus. And finding some disciples, he said to them, ‘Believing, did you receive the Holy Spirit?’ And they said to him, ‘We did not even hear whether the Holy Spirit is.’

And he said to them, ‘Then to what were you baptized?’ And they said, ‘To the baptism of John.’ And Paul said, ‘John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe into the One coming after him, that is, into the Messiah, Yahshua [Jesus].’ And hearing, they were baptized into the name of the Master Yahshua.

And Paul laying hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in different languages and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve. And going into the synagogue, he spoke boldly over three months, having reasoned with them, and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of Elohim.

But when some were hardened, and did not obey, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, departing from them, he separated the disciples, and spoke to them daily in the school of a certain Tyrannus. And this happened over two years, so as all those living in Asia heard the Word of the Master Yahshua (YAHWEH), both Jews and Arameans (Syrians). And YAHWEH did great works of power through the hands of Paul.” – Acts 19:1-11, HRB

Most Christians today have dismissed miracles that the Bible reports. They have not received the baptism of the Holy Spirit because they do not really know Him or understand His function. Their religion is incomplete or distorted. They do not acknowledge the Holy Spirit [Sanctified, Set Apart Spirit], His power or the power of the Bible. Instead, they seek what is more comfortable or what seems proper in the eyes of men. (“Holy Spirit 101“; “Listening to the Holy Spirit“)

“And YAHWEH did great works of power through the hands of Paul, so as even handkerchiefs or rags from his body to be brought onto those sick, and the diseases to be released from them, and the evil spirits to go out from them. But certain Jews, who went about exorcising evil spirits, undertook to name the name of the Master Yahshua [Jesus] over those having evil spirits, saying, ‘We adjure you by Yahshua whom Paul preaches.’ And there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, doing this. But answering the evil spirit said, ‘Yahshua I recognize, and Paul I know, but who are you?’ And the man in whom was the evil demon leaped upon them, and overpowered them, and threw them down: And they fled out of the house naked and wounded. And this became known to all, both Jews and Arameans, those living in Ephesus. And fear fell on them all, and the name of the Master Yahshua was magnified.” – Acts 19:11-17, HRB

During this time of intensive miracles in the first century, accurate knowledge about “the Way” was proclaimed as intense physical evidence of a great spiritual warfare ensued. The sensation of that time was so great that a few Jews attempted to drive out demons in the name of Yahshua [Jesus] through Paul, but were having many problems because there is order in all spiritual matters. They did not possess the Holy Spirit or use proper authority in doing what they did. They acted in ignorance. (“Life Healing and Belief“; “Strongholds & the Armor of YHWH“)

A similar problem exists today. As a result, important moves of the Holy Spirit are often seen as manufactured gimmicks or as pretense. What you see on television usually is. The Holy Spirit is not a trained puppy that rolls over to please the master. He doesn’t show up to please crowds. YHWH’s presence exists where the order of His Kingdom exists and where belief and trust are in full bloom. Many think that miracles or even the concept of spiritual warfare is ridiculous. Unbelief is rampant because so many in modern nations see themselves as too sophisticated or scientific. That is the wisdom of the world. Christians live in the wisdom of YHWH. (“Video – Wisdom of YHWH, Wisdom of Man“; “Bible: Wisdom 101“)

“And many of those who had believed came confessing their faults, and reporting there what they had done. And many magicians, bringing together the books, burned them before all. And they counted the prices of them, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver. And thus with great power was the faith of YAHWEH strengthened and increased.” – Acts 19:18-20, HRB

Early converts to Christianity in Ephesus who had previously practiced sorcery burned the scrolls that related to the occult and the sorcery that they had believed in. They repented and turned aside from their past. They owned the scrolls and destroyed them to keep them from falling into the hands of others. They also destroyed the scrolls because of the spiritual darkness that they held. They realized that they needed to break free from the past and to cleanse their lives completely from practices of the past. They had to break demonic strongholds and attachments. All of this was done through accurate knowledge, through the Messiah under the power of the Holy Spirit. (“The Importance of Practical Repentance“; “YHWH’s Revolution“; “Breaking Strongholds of False Authority“)

We can safely conclude from what we have read here that teaching others requires knowing what is true. In those days, not everyone had the complete gospel or was teaching it. Some were still teaching the gospel of John the Baptist. (Luke 3:1-18) Baptism under John was a baptism of repentance, but not a baptism of YHWH’s Holy Spirit. Other were trying out their own brand of faith like the Jewish exorcists. The same situation exists today. (“Discernment: Having an Ear to Deeper Understanding“)

The importance of complete knowledge is brought to the reader’s full attention. Not everyone was qualified to teach “the Way” until that knowledge was introduced to them. (“Discernment the World Doesn’t Have“)

“And spending some time, he went out, in order passing through the Galatian and Phrygian country, making strong all the disciples. But a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus, being powerful in the Scriptures. This one having been taught by mouth in the way of the Master, and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things about Yahshua [Jesus], but he only understood the baptism of John. And this one began to speak boldly in the synagogue. And hearing him Priscilla and Aquila took him to their home and more accurately expounded the way of Yahshua to him.

And when he was disposed to go to Achaia, the brethren anticipated him, and wrote to the disciples to receive him. And, by going, through grace, he greatly assisted all them that believed. For he powerfully confuted the Jews publicly, proving through the Scriptures Yahshua to be the Messiah.” – Acts 18:23-28, HRB

Based on the knowledge of Yahshua [Jesus] and the teaching that they had learned and received, these early disciples made a joint decision to burn their books and scrolls, the strongholds of their past. Anyone that used to operate in sinful and occult practices would do well to separate themselves from the past and to keep those materials from falling into the hands of others. More importantly, this breaks the physical grip and the temptation of drifting back into the past. It breaks the strongholds of demonic power and their attachments. It breaks demonic strongholds in the physical at the root. These disciples could have made a tidy profit by selling these books ‘in the name of’ supporting Elohim’s Kingdom. Instead, they refused to have anything more to do with the wickedness of their past. (“Understanding Sin“)

When you are operating in the full knowledge and power of the Holy Spirit, why would you want a house full of pornography magazines, books full of false religious incantations and objects that are devoted to false worship? You cleanse your life of these things! These disciples decided to burn their scrolls, manuals of their past life. (“The Journey of Life through Scripture“; “The Plight of the Strong Man“)

burn-stakeWhile the Roman Catholic Church burned books and people for centuries, this is not supported by scripture any more than the Inquisition was. More importantly, these first-century disciples were not making a cultural statement as these renegade pastors are today. First-century disciples were breaking free of the past and destroying what they had rejected. Gathering Qur’ans and destroying what you never owned or never practiced in faith, while inflaming public passions, is not supported by scripture. We are to practice the love of the Messiah. (“Serving for YHWH’s Honor“; “Breaking the Hold of Stress“)

The Apostle Paul quickly abandoned anyone that persisted in arguing against the Way, against the teaching of YHWH’s Word. As a Christian, you would do well to distance yourself from professing Christians and unbelievers (Acts 19:8-9) that are antagonistic to others based on what the Word of YHWH says. Yahshua [Jesus] tells His disciples to pursue the peace He brought them instead of strife and argument. (Philippians 4:7; Ephesians 6:10-18; “The False Shepherd and the True Shepherd“; “Which Shepherd Do You Believe?“)

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” – John 14:26-27, NKJV

“And opening his mouth, Peter said, ‘Truly I see that YAHWEH is not a respecter of faces, but in every nation the one fearing Him and working righteousness is acceptable to Him. The Word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching the good news of peace through Yahshua [Jesus] Messiah, He is Master YAHWEH of all. You know the thing that happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed, Yahshua the One from Nazareth, how YAHWEH anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good, and healing all those having been oppressed by the devil, because YAHWEH was with Him.’” – Acts 10:34-38, HRB

“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.” – John 15:12-15, NKJV

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
