“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.” – Matthew 24:15-22, NKJV
Yahshua [Jesus] gave clear warning, to those that were paying attention, the means to their salvation in the Jewish ‘last days.’ Jerusalem was a marked city destined for calamity, and the temple for utter destruction. (Matthew 24:1-2; Mark 13:2; Luke 19:42-44; 21:20, 24) History also shows that believers had ample time to leave, evidenced by the signs of great tribulation, even to return again and be destroyed if they were so tempted. While even Roman General Titus tried to avoid the destruction of the beautiful temple, the attitude of the Jews against the Roman soldiers inflamed their passions against the Temple, fulfilling the prophecy that was quoted in part above. (“The Abomination That Causes Desolation“; “Woes of the Hypocrites“; “Life Healing and Belief“: “End Time Delusion: Seeking A United Nations of Religion“)
What happened to those that remained in Jerusalem varied from execution or outright slaughter to being marched in procession before the new Emperor of Rome…
“Of the rebels, some… retired … to the Acra, others slunk down into the mines;” (VI.393, p. 489)
“Having abandoned these [three main towers] … they found immediate refuge in the ravine below Siloam;” (VI.401, p.493)
“…the victors instituted a search for those in the mines, and, tearing up the ground, slew all whom they met;” (VI.429, p. 499),
“ … many precious objects were found in these passages, and lucre legalized every expedient …. John [of Gischala], perishing of hunger with his brethren in the mines, implored from the Romans that protection which he had so often spurned…” (VI.432-433, p. 501),
“Simon [son of Gioras] … accompanied by his most faithful friends, along with some stone-cutters … let himself down with all his party into one of the secret passages. So far as the old excavation extended, they followed it…;” (VII.26, p. 513)
Judas son of Ari “secretly escaped through some of the underground passages.” (VII.215, p. 567),
– Josephus, the Jewish Wars
Multitudes of desperate Jews sought refuge or freedom through the underground passages, even the lowest parts that had been constructed under the Herodian Road. The marauding Romans penetrated every home, street, passageway and sewer in the search for those hidden in the city. The underground passages were full of ailing Jews that were dying from hunger, while others had already perished in the darkness beneath the streets. These underground passages have been recently excavated revealing that Romans soldiers literally hacked away portions of the descending stone walkways that had protected the miserable Jews underneath from capture. With few exceptions, they were forcibly removed and killed, many of them congregated under the Pool of Siloam, unable to proceed further through the dark shaft. While escape may have been possible for the knowledgeable through dark wet water tunnels leading through Hyrcania and Qumran to the Dead Sea, this was not assured by any means, nor necessarily likely based on historical accounts that exist. Some Jews had believed that the temple was indestructible, but when these zealous Jews saw the temple ablaze on the Temple Mount, most quickly lost hope for the city and for their lives. They had not listened to the words of Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah.
This prophecy, like many other Bible prophecies has dual fulfillment, full of meaning for Christians, to whom the flame of YHWH’s Spirit has been passed. The destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD was a type of a greater tribulation that would occur before the Return of the Messiah. Judaism and the multitude of the Jews had rejected the Messiah that died by their hands nearly forty years before Jerusalem fell. Before His death, Yahshua [Jesus] prophesied two events. The destruction of Jerusalem was the type, with the antitype being a greater tribulation today. Many expected the Messiah to return after the destruction of Jerusalem and gave up on their stand for faith. This disappointment may well have led to increased apostasy during the first century body of believers. Don’t be one that gives up in this day! Why?
Christians can expect the same kind of occurrences before the Second Coming of Messiah. Evidence clearly shows that the world is now in that time.
Prophecies predicted the great apostasy among the gathering of believers that took place toward the end of the first century. (Acts 20:29; 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12; 2 Timothy 3:1-8; 4:3-4; Jude 1:3-4) This prophecy indicates that a falling away from the truth of YHWH that occurred among the Jews is a type of what is happening today among professed Christians. In the eyes of history, the apostasy of the Jews was a gradual process over time. From history, we know that the Jews as a group were never able to fully remove the Spirit of Egypt from their lives, even with strong leadership through Moses and Joshua. Only individuals with the right heart condition were successful. YHWH has a point to make. Your salvation will be personal with Him, not as a group. (“Living in an Apostate World“; “Foundation of Salvation“; “The Beginnings of Faith and Salvation“; “Delusion & the Tightening Noose of the Beast System“; “Building a Counterfeit Kingdom“)
With the Jews, their final strand of apostasy against YHWH started in Babylon as they began to manufacture their own brand of faith based on their own reasoning, as well as the mysticism from the world around them. A single physical nation of people with YHWH as their banner became spiritually dead as Judaism and the Jews absorbed the corruption of the world, becoming conquered and absorbed by Egypt and then the Romans.
As a group, Christians (who can also be Jewish) have faced a similar situation that is not unique, grounded in the continued pressure from the dark kingdom and the indecision of darkened hearts. Disappointment and misunderstanding has been a constant companion of many professed Christians through the ages, waiting for the Messiah that never seems to come. False teaching has tried to run rampant almost from the beginning of the first-century body of Messiah. In the 3rd century, Constantine sealed the deal with the devil as a ‘renewed church’ merged with paganism as it plied its’ influence on the world with the old idea of setting up ‘God’s Kingdom’ on earth, as if YHWH, Elohim of Hosts ever needed any help. Reformation that has been ‘mainstreamed’ has done little to correct the corruption wrought against the accurate knowledge of scripture through tradition, distortion and outright deception. Those who have sought His truth and have been bold enough to share His truth have often been persecuted, tortured or destroyed outright. Like YHWH’s people of old, many of those that consider themselves His people today have absorbed the corruption of the world without considering the source of what they say and do. Multitudes have become spiritually absorbed into spiritual Egypt and political Rome, baptized into a world full of modern humanism and philosophy descended through worldly empires of the ages. (“Filling Your Life with Truth Instead of Deception“; “The Magi of this Age“; “The Parthenon & the Spirit of Humanism“; “The Dream: Christians & the Great Humanitarian Age“)
Just as Judaism rose and declined from 1500 BC to 70 AD, and has continued to evolve as a tradition into the future, those that profess Christianity have had a similar chain of events overall. Christians, whether by the Word or deed, have faced the same persecution and oppression by the dark kingdom. For centuries, men and women have lived with a deceptive trickster named Satan and a host of cooperative demons and mankind. Instead of seeking Elohim, these people seek ‘higher knowledge’ through control, and by professing to bring ‘God’s Kingdom’ about on earth. YHWH’s people will not quake with fear because they are spiritually prepared for what must happen, unlike the world. (Revelation 6:16; 16:15) Disciples of Messiah do not fear the wrath of their Heavenly Father.
Disciples must be fully alert, watching world events unfold in fulfillment of prophecy, as well as those unfolding throughout Christianity, so that we are not deceived and distracted. (Mark 13:33-37; John 14:6; Ephesians 6:12; 1 Corinthians 13:16; 1 Peter 5:8) The abomination is incorporating a pattern of worldly thinking, religious apostasy and personal importance; all idolatry, over the Bible. The clear-minded observer can see the fulfillment of Matthew 24:29 advancing as the dark kingdom plunges into an economic and political abyss, to be restored as an angel of light before the masses. (2 Corinthians 11:14; “Disciple: The Pattern of Your Life“; “Condemnation, Dogs & Hogs“; “YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“; “Wisdom & the Battle of Two Kingdoms“)
Matthew 24:5 indicates that false teachers prefer a different gospel that contradicts YHWH’s Word. (2 Corinthians 11:1-4) The Bible indicates that as we approach the end of this age, militant religious activity must increase. (Revelation 6:1–2) In the last days, people will have “a form of godliness” or righteousness, but their righteousness will not be built on the purity of the Bible. (2 Timothy 3:1–5; 4:1–4). False teachers and an antichrist or antimessiah element will advance their influence just before a period of spiritual darkness advances on the globe. (2 Thessalonians 2:1–12; 2 Peter 2:1–3; 3:1–18; “The Struggle for Purity of Heart“; “Purity Starts Inside: A Lesson Through the Ages“; “Humility: Do You Need It?“; “The Antichrist & the War on Reality“)
Disciples that will survive into YHWH’s Kingdom must seek Him where He may be found, set apart from the world of sin. (Isaiah 55:6) A period of darkness will rock the nations to their foundations. Those that actually have Yahshua [Jesus] the Master as their foundation will not be moved from their faith. The Holy Spirit [Sanctified, Set Apart Spirit] will strengthen them and YHWH will provide for them. (Matthew 24:14 Acts 1:8; Zechariah 4:14) YHWH has given His people explicit instructions. His children, son and daughters of His gospel will follow those instructions. The rest will do as they please. When the time comes, will you clamber in terror underneath the cities and in underground caverns or have you prepared for His Return? I have presented this information to you, not to condemn, but to motivate you to begin the fine works that your Heavenly Father wants you to operate in as you look to Him. Seek YHWH first in your life and all other things will be added to you! (Matthew 6:24-33; Hebrews 10:23-24; “Which Shepherd Do You Believe?“; “The False Shepherd and the True Shepherd“)
