The Book of Amos: Everyone Answers to YHWH

by John and Ruth Greene

Wall-StreetUp until the economic meltdown of 2008 and the great uprising of fear that rose from that, the leaders of the United States and much of the “modern first world” were optimistic. They believed that they had reason to be. Business was booming and the mainstream of the population was happy or, at least were told they were. Comfort and luxury had grown with a great sense of self-sufficiency and a false sense of security. This great sense of prosperity, whether real or imagined, was marked by an ongoing groundswell of corruption behind the scenes, as well as the systematic destruction of meaningful relationships and “family values” for generations. Nevertheless, the high places have been shaken, only the beginning despite sunny visions of prosperity. (Ezekiel 38:20; Isaiah 2:21; 13:10; 34:4; Joel 2:21; Matthew 24:29; Mark 13:25; Revelation 6:13; “Are You a Christian First or Last?“; “YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“) For the remnant of the Messiah, only the following can be true, for our trust is in Elohim [‘God‘]:

“Elohim is our refuge and strength, very much found to be a help in distresses. On account of this we will not fear when the earth changes and when mountains are slipping into the heart of the seas. Let its waters rage and foam; let the mountains shake in its swelling. Selah. There is a river, its channels gladden the city of Elohim, the holy tabernacles of the Most High. Elohim is in the midst of her; she shall not be shaken; Elohim will help her at the turning of the morning. The nations roared; kingdoms were shaken; He gave forth His voice and the earth melted. YAHWEH of Hosts is with us; the Elohim of Jacob is a refuge for us. Selah.” – Psalm 46:1-7, HRB

camel travel routeHistory tends to repeat itself because people really haven’t changed that much, nor have most of them sought to. Like many western-styled nations of today, the nation of Israel and surrounding lands had evolved into a similar state under the control of Samaria. Tolls from the trade routes that passed through their nations made many wealthy, notably the upper crust of society. The machinations of preceding kings had polluted the purity of their spiritual knowledge with religious observance blended with that of the surrounding peoples. More and more, YHWH was seen alongside other gods as just another god to be pacified. Israel had become no better than the peoples around them as they descended into a spiritual abyss. The wealthy and powerful people had become not only prosperous, but also greedy and self-centered. (Amos 6:1, 3-7; 8:4-7, 8-10) They established trade relations with one another to exploit and control. (Amos 1-2) Even illegal activities were winked at to satisfy national lusts. Slavery of the poor and oppressed became a way of life as over-taxation, land-grabbing and profiteering grasped the nation. The elite and machinery of the nation worshipped these ideals. Cruelty and indifference toward the poor or less privileged was fashioned as a way of life for the wealthy. (“Giving to Others While Trusting in YHWH for Your Needs“; “Financial Usury & Bible Truth: Lending, Giving & Borrowing“; “Foundation of a Global System of Greed“; “Do You Live a Lifestyle of Greed?“)

shepherd sheepIn the end, the majority had abandoned real faith in YHWH, but pretended to be religious as it benefited them to do so. They carried out religious performances instead of living in spiritual integrity or living with heartfelt obedience toward YHWH. On the surface, everyone claimed to be in His favor as they championed men of Elohim. When you think of a ‘man of God’ today, you might consider a famous evangelist, a ‘reverend’ or ‘bishop,’ someone that preaches for a living, perhaps someone you see on television. A man that seems quite ordinary can be a man of YHWH as well, without the fancy titles or the financial support of a large body of people. Such is the case with Amos, a sheep herder and farmer that lived in the countryside of Judea. Amos did not have a royal pedigree. He was not descended from priests, prophets, wealth or royalty. Because of his willingness, Amos was able to be a channel for YHWH’s message to others, acting on a vision that YHWH gave him as he shepherded his flock in the fields. (“Hardened Hearts: Strengthening the Brotherhood in Messiah“;”Which Shepherd Do You Believe?“; “Credentials of a Disciple of Messiah“)

Israel had become a divided nation underneath a pious veneer of religious ritual. (Amos 5:21-26) Scripture makes a point of mentioning the national fascination with worshiping idols and abusing the poor through slavery and exploitation. This resulted in a loss of favor for the nation, as YHWH, Elohim of Hosts, sought to bring the ruling elite and their brainwashed followers to their senses. Through Amos, He cursed the nations to their face. (Amos 1-2; “The False Shepherd and the True Shepherd“; “The Wheels of Ezekiel“)

hardened-heartThose in Israel that initially heard the judgment sounded by Amos rejoiced until they learned of the joint judgment that they would share because of national sin and corruption. (Amos 7:10, 12, 16) All the people that YHWH had brought out of Egypt had refused to cleanse the land under His orders since the time of Joshua. Instead, YHWH’s people of that time made alliances with nations around them. They ignored the Will of YHWH even though they knew the truth, unlike the nations around them. Many in Israel began to establish themselves as a clearing house for loaning money and by exploiting the masses for their own purposes. (Amos 2:6-8) As a result, the tall cedars of Israel were effectively cut off and repurposed for the worst purposes. Through their dark natures and greed, Satan had removed their spiritual fruit and their spiritual roots. (Amos 2:9) They became animals of the worst kinds of lusts, their lifestyles grounded in mammon. You can plainly see the same kinds of behaviors today! (“Knowing Where You Stand on YHWH’s Threshing Floor“; “Lifestyle: Where Do You Place Your Trust?“)

ancient-dream-glamourThe message of Amos was directed to a ruling upper class and elite businessmen. The middle class was falling into poverty. (Amos 5:11-15) The wealthy acted out their faith in a country club kind of atmosphere with extra tithes and sacrifices, as they took advantage of the helpless poor. In Israel, the elite built a system ruled through an abstraction of power. They advocated dehumanizing the poor by selling them as slaves (Deuteronomy 15:7-11; Amos 8:6), exploiting them (Exodus 23:6; Deuteronomy 16:19), taking illegal collateral for loans (Exodus 22:26-27; Deuteronomy 24:6, 12, 13), engaging in perversity and sexual sin (Leviticus 20:11-12) and worshiping gods other than YHWH. (Exodus 23:4-5) They were their own gods. For example, the wealthy women were only concerned with themselves as they pestered their husbands for more. (Amos 4:1-2) They felt entitled to do as they pleased, just like so many proud women of today. They cared nothing for anyone but themselves. They and many of the nation would be removed by the Assyrians with hooks in their flesh, a common treatment of vanquished peoples forced to submit. (“Trust YHWH, Not World Leaders“; “Truth About YHWH’s Wrath“)

Just like most people today, the people of that time did not want to hear about right and wrong, about their sin, about judgment in any way. They were not interested in prophecy. They railed against it and against anyone that took a strong stand for truth. (Amos 2:12, 7:10-17) They did not want to be inconvenienced. When the Almighty withheld good from His people, they did not look to Him for answers. They stubbornly continued in error without sense, just as leaders of men and their servants do today. (Amos 4:4-13) YHWH expects to tread on stubborn hearts in high places, setting up a plumb line of judgment. (Amos 7:7-9; “Understanding Sin“; “Learning to Live Outside of Blind Justice“)

“’For they do not know to do right,’ declares YAHWEH, ‘those who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.’” – Amos 3:10, HRB

YHWH’s people of that day no longer knew how to do what was right. The more they sinned, the harder it was to remember what YHWH wanted. The same is true today. The longer you wait to deal with sin, the greater that sin holds onto you! In time, you forget to do what you know is right. Your focus, then your conscience becomes corrupted as you hone in on yourself and the world around you. You faint in doubt and unbelief or you build a new reality of significance through the system of Satan. (“Pursue Righteousness“; “Serving for YHWH’s Glory“)

“Do two walk together without either agreeing?” – Amos 3:3, direct translation

love-sincere-inspiration-imageWith this question, Amos makes a direct point that each person must personally apply. Partners walk together. You either walk with YHWH, your Heavenly Father, or you walk with Satan. Satan roars like a lion seeking you as prey. This assumes, of course, that he doesn’t already have you or risks losing you. In the same way that a real lion roars, he roars at the ground with the idea of paralyzing his prey into inaction or further confusing his prey to snare them or keep them ensnared, to keep the prey in fear. The snare of terror is set to trap you into being in fear, to expect the worst, encouraging you to be complicit with his plans and the plans of his agents apart from YHWH. (Exodus 33:3) It is a deception that Satan revels in. The decision is yours. The end result is YHWH’s judgment, depending on your decision! (“Abiding in Trust“; “Overcoming Satanic Attack“)

“So Adonai YAHWEH says this: ‘An enemy! And he shall be all around the land. And he shall bring you down from your fortress, and your palaces shall be plundered.’” – Amos 3:11, HRB

dusty-bible-read-meCuriously, this reality is no different today among Christians in the United States or among Christians in the rest of the modern world. Israel went through the continued rise and fall in power and prosperity until the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Both Jews and Christians have a sad history of failing to listen and to apply YHWH’s counsel. The reasoning could be that they went through rises and falls in power and prestige and as a result, are little different from the rest of the world. Even YHWH lamented that His people did not return to Him in their darker moments. Through His prophets YHWH pled with His people. Only a small remnant of Jacob would follow Him. (Amos 7:4) These Jews are a smaller part of a remnant of disciples of Messiah that are saved through active belief and trust in Him. (John 14:6) Yahshua [Jesus] is the way, truth and life, but this has little value to you when you refuse to make His truth, your way. YHWH has rejected the meaningless religious rituals and traditions of man. (Amos 5:18-27) As predicted, only a remnant of either peoples, Jews and Christians seek Him. (“A Coming Peril Before Change“)

Based on what the Bible says over and over, the attentive reader already knows this judgment must certainly come against the world because man and his systems fail to listen or heed Elohim’s commands. (Amos 5:1-2; 7:9) Israel believed that they were secure, just as the modern world is determined to be secure. Much like Israel, and then the Roman Babylon and Muslim Babylon, these leaders of men have designed their own tower of Babel to themselves. These systemic temples of Babylon are grounded in an elite monetary system, encouraged by religious Babylon (Revelation 18) and cemented into place by national rulers and an elite corporate body. The system is designed around mammon and the appearance of wealth and prestige. The entire world system must reap judgment for their idolatrous leadership. The Day of Judgment will not be pleasant, but necessary to bring forth His Kingdom. (Amos 5:21-26; Acts 2:22-36; “What Does Your Church Teach About Satan the Destroyer?“; “Disciple of Messiah: Abomination That Causes Desolation“; “Bible Prophecy and the Rise of the Corporation“)

spiritual slumberYHWH always warns His people so that they can not deny, rationalize and complain when punishment finally arrives that He promised. (Leviticus 26; Deuteronomy 11:28; 22-32; 28:15-68) YHWH’s people of the past did not escape the curse of disobedience. Even with the grace brought through our Messiah, obedience is a required fruit, not an option. A disciple bears fruit. (Romans 1:1-6, 15:18; 2 Corinthians 10:3-6; 1 Peter 1:22) It is best that you do not take the admonition of YHWH lightly. He chastises those that He loves. (2 Samuel 7:12-16; Hebrews 12:6; Isaiah 9:14-15; 29:5; 30:13; Jeremiah 6:26; 15:8) As a result, YHWH’s people of that day that continually refused to listen were scattered and plundered, to plunder and exploit others through history as this cycle of curses continually repeated itself. They didn’t learn from their past, seek to correct their errors or seek a deeper spiritual truth. They lived life in “automatic mode” and bore the spiritual fruit bereft of YHWH. (1 Corinthians 16:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 5:5-6; Revelation 22:15) Overall, the history of the Jewish people bears this out. The history of Christianity, whether real or professed, bears the same reality as well. The curse is not limited to YHWH’s people, as these curses also bear fruit through the disobedience of the nations through leaders of men, as well as retribution for coming against His people. The curse brings about a great spiritual drought of truth. A great spiritual drought existed in those days as it often has throughout history into today. Even strong young men and women would faint away due to their spiritual thirst and meet their end decreed by YHWH, Elohim of Hosts. (Amos 8:11-13) What a horrible sight to imagine! (“Christianity: A Crisis in Prayer & Spirit“;”A Divine Warning for Christian America“;”Leaven of the Pharisees; Leaven of the World“; “A Branch of the Vine through Trust“)

When a person acts without regard to Bible truth or accountability, either spiritually or in life, that deficit always comes home to roost, part of the curse that YHWH promised. (Habakkuk 2:7) When national leaders act without accountability, the curse on the nation is the same except for those that turn aside from the sin. Even though the world is full of rebellion, the world still operates under YHWH’s spiritual laws, laws that men are commanded to observe as they live their personal trust through His grace (undeserved mercy, love). (“Disciple: Renewing Your Mind“; “Holy Spirit 101“)

treasureFor Israel, it was too late for the rulers and elite of Israel to turn aside from their sin. (Amos 9:1-4) The destruction of their power and everything they held dear would be totally through an attack by Assyria. Through the testimony of scripture, over and over, YHWH has shown us that man cannot be saved in groups, either as nations or people groups. His people are saved one at a time, by trust and He abides with them. He wants His people to seek Him because He already knows that most will not. (Amos 5:4-7) Instead, they turn justice into bitterness and cast off righteousness. Because of attitudes of the heart, only a remnant will be saved. (Amos 3:11-12; 9:10) The nations of people that will not listen to the Word of YHWH face a similar “fate” to that of Israel. (“The Roots of Biblical End Times“; “Tribulation of Israel: The Great Escape“)

What do you hold dear? What do you respect? Are you living with your Heavenly Father or pretending to? Do you seek only His truth? Only you know the answer. Now is the time to turn aside from the past and look to a new future, with a renewed heart and mind through the help of the Holy Spirit [Sanctified, Set Apart Spirit], eyes firmly on Yahshua [Jesus] and your Heavenly Father. (Amos 9:13-15; Hebrews 12:2) As authors of this article, both of us grieve in our hearts for those that refuse to listen because they deny the power of YHWH while they do as they please with His Word. Israel has been restored in the hearts of the remnant, not in a physical nation. (John 2:19; Mark 14:58; 1 Peter 2:5; 1 Corinthians 3:16; “Video: What is Idolatry?“; “Listening to the Holy Spirit“; “How to Receive the Holy Spirit“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
