Disciple: The Pattern of Your Life

by John and Ruth Greene

I exhort you truly brothers, through the compassion of Elohim [‘God’], provide your bodies a living sacrifice, set apart, in full agreement to Elohim, your reasonable service. So do not be conformed to the age, but to the contrary, transformed in the renewing of your mind. You must test what is beneficial, even fully agreeable and complete to the Will of Elohim.” – Romans 12:1-2, direct translation

Disciples are to be living sacrifices, daily laying aside personal desires to follow the Messiah. This is done by putting all your resources and energy at His disposal while trusting Him to guide you through the Holy Spirit [Sanctified, Set Apart Spirit]. He has done no less for you and everyone that responds to His Word. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) He wants you to be transformed with a renewed mind. He wants you to honor and obey Him. How are you going to do this if you don’t know of YHWH or His Word? If you don’t know Bible truth or reject the Holy Spirit, you don’t know who Elohim is. You cannot deny His Spirit and expect to reap anything from denying His Spirit. (Hosea 5:4; Ephesians 4:24) You will certainly not receive YHWH’s best when your heart is hardened against that best. He gave His Son to make your new life possible. As disciples, we must joyfully give ourselves as a living sacrifice to His service. He wants His perfect will in your life. Disciples are no longer to conform to the patterns of the world with its behaviors and customs that are selfish and corrupting. (2 Corinthians 3:18, 5:20, 8:5; Philemon 1:8; 2 Peter 2:5; 1 Thessalonians 4:4-5; “Does the Sacrifice of Messiah Apply to You?“; “YHWH’s Revolution“; “Leaven of the Pharisees; Leaven of the World“)

“For I say, through the favor which has been given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he should think, but to think soberly, as Elohim has given to each a measure of belief. For as we have many members in one body, but all members do not have the same function, so we, the many, are one body in Messiah, and members each one of one another.  Now having different gifts, according to the favour which was given to us, let us use them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of belief; if serving, in the serving; or he who is teaching, in the teaching; or he who encourages, in the encouragement; or he who is sharing, in sincerity; he who is leading, in diligence; he who shows compassion, joyously. ” – Romans 12:3-8, ISR98

set-apart-Spirit-bannerThrough the power of the Holy Spirit, YHWH gives disciples spiritual gifts. (Acts 1:8, 2:1-4, 4:31; Luke 21:25; John 14:15-17, 16:5-7, 12-15, 20:21-23; Hebrews 12:19; Joel 2:28-29) This is not a contrivance of man, but an act of YHWH. They are filled. In Greek, this is aorist passive, meaning that someone else filled them (pimplemi). The Spirit came upon them and filled them with Himself. With time and your cooperation, YHWH’s purifying presence burns away the undesirable elements of your life, setting your heart aflame to ignite the lives of others. Do you deny His power or that you will be used? This holy fire has a great history in YHWH’s people that must not be denied today, even though so many do. (Exodus 19:16-18; 1 Kings 19:10-13; Acts 2:5-12, 15-21, 22; 1 Corinthians 13-14) Are you listening? (“Holy Spirit 101“; “Listening to the Holy Spirit“)

Love is the single most important quality that a person can possess, greater than all other spiritual gifts. Love is unselfish service to others without expectation. Love is the expression of personal trust in YHWH. That love through the Holy Spirit allows disciples to operate in spiritual gifts to build up and to inform others. These gifts are for spiritual unity, not for power or superiority. These gifts are only beneficial when they are properly used to help everyone in the gathering of Messiah. They are not a tool for personal pleasure or power over others. Worship is orderly and loving, openly sharing trust and testimony while building up and learning in the Messiah. (“Real Love“; “Gifts of the Spirit & Speaking in Tongues“)

“For we know in part and we prophesy in part.  But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part shall be inactive. ” – 1 Corinthians 13:9-10, ISR98

bible-7As sanctified disciples, we have plenty to look forward to, including a more complete understanding of Bible prophecy and the universe around us. On the other hand, those that live according to sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires. Those that live in YHWH’s Spirit have their minds set on what He desires. The mindset of sinful men and women leads to death. The mind that abides in the Spirit leads to life and peace. The sinful mind is hostile to YHWH. It does not submit to YHWH’s Spirit, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please YHWH. If the Spirit of YHWH lives in you, it is clearly evident. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Messiah, he does not belong to His Kingdom. If Messiah abides in you, your body is dead because of sin, but your spirit is alive to righteousness. The Holy Spirit is YHWH’s promise or seal for the eternal life of believers. By trust through the knowledge of the Word of YHWH, you can live forever. (Romans 8:23-25, 26-27; 1 Corinthians 15:25-58; 2 Corinthians 1:22, 5:5; Ephesians 1:14; “Understanding Sin“; “Do You Take Sin For Granted?“; “Being Set Apart Makes You Aware of Sin“)

bible-hug-internetIt is natural for children to trust their parents, even though parents sometimes fail to keep their promises. Your Heavenly Father, however, never makes promises that He isn’t willing to keep. His desires for you may take longer than you might expect. Rather than acting like impatient children while you wait for His Will to unfold, we would do better to place confidence in His goodness and wisdom. (Romans 3:21-26, 5:1-11, 6:1-11, 22-23) Your new life begins when you believe and obey. When you respond to YHWH’s invitation, you obey. Belief without obedience is impossible. This is the process of sanctification. You become dead to sin and alive in Yahshua [Jesus]! (Romans 6:13-14) Because of His sacrificial death, sanctified disciples do not need to fear death. (Romans 6:15-18) You experience a new vigor and meaning in life! (“What Is Washing By The Word?“; “The Importance of Practical Repentance“)

“Let love be without hypocrisy. Shrink from what is wicked, cling to what is good. In brotherly love, tenderly loving towards one another, in appreciation, giving preference to each other; not idle in duty, ardent in spirit, serving the Master; rejoicing in the expectancy, enduring under pressure, continuing steadfastly in prayer;  imparting to the needs of the set-apart ones, pursuing kindness towards strangers.” – Romans 12:9-13, ISR98

unbrotherly-love-wThe real problem in this world is that love isn’t real, even within much of the gathering of Messiah. How many of us have pretended to love others, even speaking kindly, avoiding hurt feelings and appearing to take an interest. You can be very skilled in pretending to feel moved with compassion when you hear about the trials of others. You may become indignant when you hear about injustice. YHWH calls His disciples to real and sincere love beyond pretense and polite posturing. Sincere love requires effort, even concentration! This love means helping others to become better people, demanding your personal time, money and involvement. (“Deception: The Plague of Love Detachment“; “Giving to Others While Trusting in YHWH for Your Needs“)

Your deep personal motives are important. They honor YHWH, as well as other people. This is not about competition or showing off like the Pharisees liked to do. YHWH wants you to put others first and to cease the constant habit of thinking of yourself first. Yahshua [Jesus] set the ultimate example.

helping handDon’t pretend to love. Do it! Do not be polite or insincere. Help others become better people. Sincere love requires effort. It demands your time, money and personal involvement. Few individuals have the capacity to express love to a whole community, but the gathering of Messiah does. Look for people that need your brotherly love and look for ways to express your love around you. Be especially certain to share with your brothers and sisters in the gathering that have real needs! (James 2:15-16; 1 John 3:17; Galatians 6:10; 1 Corinthians 12:26; “Love Promotes Healthy Giving“; “Disciple: The Love of the Greater Number“)

“Bless those who persecute you – bless and do not curse.  Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not be proud in mind, but go along with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.” – Romans 12:14-16, ISR98 (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

giving favorably through graceThe pattern of the world often sees blessing as hospitality or entertainment. But Christians are not to focus on self, but on a listening ear, a place to stay, a meal or simply acceptance as a friend. This brotherly love focuses on the simple instead of pretense, or the ornate and high-minded. Brotherly love is like the grace that your Heavenly Father provides to you. (Philippians 2:2-3, 15-16; Titus 3:14; “Disciple: The Pattern of Your Life“; “A Pattern of Prayer“)

“Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.  If possible, on your part, be at peace with all men.  Beloved, do not revenge yourselves, but give place to the wrath, for it has been written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I shall repay,’ says YHWH.  Instead, if your enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him a drink, for in so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head.” – Romans 12:17-21, ISR98

forgiveness requiredThe core of a Christian disciple is forgiveness. Disciples are to spread the grace (undeserved favor) that they have received from YHWH. This means a willingness to show agape love to an enemy or a former enemy, forgiving him or her and showing brotherly love just as your Messiah did for you. (Hebrews 12:14; Ephesians 4:3, 26-27; James 3:17; Romans 5:8, 10; “Is Your Forgiveness Real?“; “Forsaking Bitterness“; “The Stronghold of Anger“)

In a world that seeks revenge while demanding human rights, Christians are to be willing to befriend those that have hurt or harmed others, even when they have experienced personal hurt. Forgiveness breaks the cycle of retaliation. This forgiving attitude may inspire a change in others. By refusing to pay evil for evil, the opposition has the opportunity to repent, to turn aside from deeds of the past, even to apologize for them. Even when you don’t feel it inside at first, right actions will lead to right feelings. The Egyptian proverb that the Apostle Paul quotes indicates that the best way to get rid of enemies is to turn them into friends, or at least to inspire friendly conduct. In any event, vengeance belongs to the Heavenly Father. Disciples leave those kind of matters to their Heavenly Father. (Deuteronomy 32:35-36, 40-43; Matthew 5:9, 39; 2 Corinthians 7:11; 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10; Revelation 6:9-11; “Discernment 101: Learning to be Discerning“; “Discernment the World Doesn’t Have“)

Your personal living offering is a type of your Savior, offering Himself in perfect devotion to the Father’s Will. In the old law (Leviticus 1:6-9), the person that made the offering and the priest received nothing. The sacrifice was completely devoted to YHWH. Through sacrifice, the believer was to live a life completely dedicated to YHWH, Elohim of Hosts. We don’t have the same kind of sacrifice in this day. Instead, disciples are set apart to Him through the Holy Spirit. In this way, the Father has great expectations, loving-kindness for those that listen to Him and obey. (“The Thread of Life in Messiah“; “Single-minded Commitment in Face of Trauma“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
