“And they pulled up stakes from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the soul of the people became impatient because of the way. And the people spoke against Elohim, and against Moses, Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul hates this light bread. And YAHWEH sent the Seraphaim in the form of serpents among the people; and they bit the people, and many people of Israel died.” – Numbers 21:4-6, HRB
The wilderness was full of trial and uncertainty for Israel. They were no longer in their comfort zone, even though they were free from the oppression of Egypt. They were afraid, unused to the freedom that they had. The majority still had the mindset of slaves, the only lifestyle they had experienced. Psalm 78 reveals the thankless mindset of many. They forgot the miracles that they had enjoyed. (78:11) Stiff necks resisted against YHWH’s law. (78:10) Hearts were hardened against Him. As the Israelites complained about YHWH’s provision, they found that they were cursed with venomous snakes. Many were suffering greatly and dying. The Desert of Sinai had a number of snakes, some of which were poisonous. (“Learning from Snakes in the Wilderness“; “The War on Reality“; “Strongholds & the Armor of YHWH“)
As usual, Moses interceded for stiff-necked Israel. Many had admitted their error. In an unprecedented move, YHWH instructed Moses to fashion a bronze snake (technically, fiery serpent or seraph, H8314) and put that snake on a pole as a standard, just as they would erect a standard during a war. Anyone that had been bitten in the wilderness of the desert was required to look at the bronze serpent to live, atonement for the results of personal sin. Moses didn’t need to trouble himself any further on this account. (“The Wheels of Ezekiel“; “YHWH’s Threshing Floor“)
Just as Israel could be healed by looking at the bronze snake, Israel and spiritual Israel of the future could be made whole by trusting in the sacrifice of Messiah the Savior. Israel wasn’t simply granted the petitions of salvation. YHWH required action on their part. They had to trust in their personal healing through their obedience. Today, disciples of spiritual Israel live among the world, another kind of wilderness, a spiritual kind. Disciples have a spiritual warfare against sin. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) Our provision is Yahshua [Jesus] the Master and our Counselor, the Holy Spirit [Sanctified, Set Apart Spirit]. Disciples are to be set apart to Elohim and His Kingdom. We still have the advantage despite the mindset around us. (“Life Healing and Belief“; “Healing Wounds That People Can’t See“; “Redeemed Through Obedience & Faith“)
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:14-15
Disciples of the Messiah are instructed to “…run with endurance the race set before us, looking to the Princely Leader and Perfecter of our belief, Yahshua, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the stake, having despised the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of Elohim. For consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and faint in your lives. You have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the appeal which speaks to you as to sons, “My son, do not despise the discipline of YHWH, nor faint when you are reproved by Him, for whom YHWH loves, He disciplines, and flogs every son whom He receives.” – Hebrews 12:1-6, ISR98
The mindset that you hold determines your victory.
