Breaking the Hold of Addictions through Temptation

by John and Ruth Greene

breaking-addiction“For years I was a smoker. When I was pregnant with my first child I had strong anxiety about taking care of a baby. When she was born, I told the doctor about these feelings of being tied down and alone, since I had a husband in the military that was gone for 10 months or more at a time. This military doctor would not give me any medication, but suggested that I begin smoking to help me to relax. “It wasn’t good to give a young mother pills” for what that I was experiencing. Smoking did seem to help and I was officially hooked. As my children grew and I became established in a more personal walk with my Heavenly Father, even into a new ministry of song, I continued to carry this burden of smoking. Almost nobody knew that I smoked because I loaded up on perfume and I never smoked in public. I knew that I needed to be a clean vessel. I prayed for YHWH to help me. I tried under my own power, but did not find complete success. Then, as I was gassing up in Abilene at a convenience store, I succumbed to temptation and bought a pack of cigarettes. As I was getting in my car, my Heavenly Father spoke to me: “You asked me to help you to stop smoking, but you keep buying them [cigarettes].” I got out of my car and threw that new pack of cigarettes in the trash. With that, my trust was established. With YHWH’s help, at that moment, I was able to stop cold turkey as the saying goes. I was not tempted to pick them up again for quite some time. (“The Real Power Behind Baptism“; “How to Receive the Holy Spirit“)

I believe that when you ask YHWH anything, you can receive what you ask, but you must believe that He answers prayers. You must be willing to live in agreement with what you pray for. That doesn’t necessarily remove all temptations. Habits can be hard to break, especially at first. Conditioned behaviors often work to get in your way. Patches and pills that are promoted don’t remove temptation. I was fighting several temptations. Fear and anxiety, compounded by temptation can be strong motivators that you must not give into. Submit yourself to YHWH, fight the devil and he will flee, the Bible admonishes. You must be willing to succeed. (Psalm 119:11; Matthew 6:13; James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8; 1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Corinthians 2:11) You have the authority through Messiah. (1 John 3:8-9; Colossians 2:15; Ephesians 1:21-23; “Is Your Forgiveness Real?“; “Overcoming Satanic Attack“; “Overcoming Fear during Tough Times“) YHWH and the power of His Holy Spirit [Sanctified, Set Apart Spirit] is what you need. Confrontation is required. (“Mind Filters“; “Discernment 101: Learning to be Discerning“)

stress-in-trafficI was doing a lot of driving in ministry in those days. As I was driving to Dallas one particular day, the traffic was heavy. I was stressed and tired. I didn’t think of YHWH or His Word (Luke 4:3-4) when I bought those cigarettes before. Once again, I succumbed to temptation and bought a pack. At first, I was horribly dizzy after I smoked and I couldn’t drive right away. Once that feeling passed, I got on the road again. I smoked half of the pack all the way to Dallas, hardly with a thought to what I was doing. On arriving in Dallas, I realized that when you ask YHWH for anything, you have to follow through. He may remind you or leave you to a reprobate mind. Your conscience may prick you or it may not. That depends on your spirit of faith and even what you believe. I felt the sting of conviction once I awoke from my momentary spiritual slumber. YHWH had answered me personally to stop smoking and I had picked up cigarettes again and smoked half a pack in a moment of stress, relying only on myself and the conditioning of my body. You have to trust YHWH, believe for healing in your life and stay in His Word. Remember that Yahshua [Jesus] is the Word, the conclusion of the Torah and Prophets, what is often called the Old Testament. Yahshua [Jesus] completes His people. When tempted, even in a greatly weakened physical state, Yahshua [Jesus] met Satan with scripture and Satan departed. (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-11) He was our example. Praise to YHWH, I am cigarette free now for many years without the thought or desire to return to them.” – Ruth Greene

black-woman-frownTemptation is the first bridge in your spiritual battle against addiction of any kind. Addiction commonly displays itself through conditioned responses and behaviors of the past. What enters your mind or momentarily occurs to you could be temptation that you must avoid. Temptation is anything that gets in the way of a pure walk with your Heavenly Father. The truth is, very few people actually deal with temptation effectively, at least much of the time. That shouldn’t be the case, and it doesn’t need to be the case for believers when the focus is on YHWH! Remember that whatever thought enters your mind, no matter the source, can only be temptation until your bring temptation to life with your actions. You live in a fallen world and temptation is continually before you. The truth is that you can’t plan to fail, even in the depths of your heart or that defeat will surface. You must avoid situations that you know will lead or have led to your succumbing to temptation in the past. Putting aside the temptation and avoiding the sources of temptation are part of regular spiritual warfare in your life. Temptations can begin to carve out a foothold of Satan in your mind when you allow this. You must be prepared without an excuse, putting down the propaganda of the world. You prepare yourself spiritually as you grow spiritually. Your trust is in YHWH and the sacrifice of Messiah! You seek to be fully grounded in the Word of YHWH and the Holy Spirit! You must not be deceived by the world, which is why spiritual discernment is so important. (“Temptations & Tough Choices“; “Source & Solution of Temptations“)

“But we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit from YAHWEH, so that we might know the things that are freely given to us by YAHWEH. For the things which we discuss, are not dependant on the knowledge of words and man’s wisdom, but on the teaching of the Holy Spirit, thus explaining spiritual things with the spiritual minded. But the material man rejects the things of the Spirit of YAHWEH, for they are foolishness to him, and he is not able to know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But the spiritual man discerns everything, and yet no man is able to discern him. For ‘Who has known the mind of YAHWEH that he will instruct Him?’ But we have the mind of Messiah.” – 1 Corinthians 2:12-16, HRB

Yahshua [Jesus] prepared Himself as an example to us. (Isaiah 40:13) He spent thirty years getting ready for his massive onslaught with the devil and those under his subjection. By waiting until He was thirty He was also following the law in that age and place. At the age of twelve about the time of His ‘bar mitzvah’ (remember that the Master was Jewish). He was asking questions of the ‘doctors of the Law’, even astounding them with His observations. He had committed His life to His purpose. Before He began His earthly ministry, He was anointed by the Holy Spirit in front of the world though baptism by John in the Jordan before He went to fast in the desert.

bible-hug-internetI can tell you from personal experience that being filled with the Holy Spirit is a requirement to effectively overcoming temptation. For me, as with others, I was not always filled with or compliant with the Holy Spirit. (Jude 1:20-21; Ezekiel 11:19, 18:31, 36:26) As you grow in maturity you develop the fruits of the spirit, but this is not the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-24; John 3:1-20) In fact, until you receive the power of the Holy Spirit you will likely have great trouble dealing with those fruits depending on the strongholds that are grounded in your life and that of your family. When you are grounded in accurate Bible knowledge and trust in Elohim [‘God’], you engage in regular continual prayer along with gaining experience in the gifts of the Holy Spirit as you grow in spiritual maturity. (1 Corinthians 12:1-11, 31, 14:1-39; Isaiah 11:2-4, 28:11-12; “The Promise of the Holy Spirit“; “Heavenly Father Has A Name“)

“Yahshua [Jesus] answered and said to him, Truly, truly I say to you, that if a man is not born again, he is not able to see the Kingdom of YAHWEH.’… Yahshua answered, ‘Truly, truly I say to you, that if a man is not born from water and spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of YAHWEH. The thing, which is born from flesh, is flesh, and the thing, which is born from spirit, is spirit. Do not wonder because I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind will blow where it desires, and you hear its voice. But you do not know from where it comes or to where it goes. Likewise is everyone who is born from Spirit.’” – John 3:3, 5-8, HRB

bible-reader-internetOnce again, remember that all temptation is rooted in conditioning of the past, which is further empowered by selfishness, envy and other lusts of the flesh. These fruits of the world separate you easily from walking uprightly with YHWH. Yahshua [Jesus] removed the authority of Satan, but deceiving yourself in a world full of deception can be quite easy, especially when YHWH’s Word is not your source! (John 12:31, 14:30, 16:11) Satan and the world still operate in power although they do not have the right to rule. (dumamis = power vs. exousia = authority) Remember that YHWH’s Kingdom is not yet in fullness on earth, except within you except to the extent that you abide in Him. (Matthew 16:19, 28:18; Colossians 1:13, Revelation 2:25-27; “Abiding With YHWH in Quiet Places“; “Abiding with Your Heavenly Father“)

“For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – comes not from the Father but from the world.” – 1 John 2:16, NKJV

“Blessed is the man who endures temptation, because having been approved he will receive the crown of life which YAHWEH promised to the ones loving Him. Let no one being tempted say, I am tempted from YAHWEH. For Elohim is not tempted by evil, and He tempts no one. But each one is tempted by his own lusts, he covets and is seduced by them.” – James 1:12-14, HRB

thinking-black-woman-smTemptation is firmly grounded in what you think about, and don’t forget about those roots of conditioned behaviors. Conditioned behaviors often dog you in the early stages of discipleship as you press into the Holy Spirit. The cravings of the flesh and associations of the past can be substantial. That is why you need to seek a new life, not only in spirit, but in your life as you live it in the natural world. (Philippians 4:8) When your mind and heart is focused on YHWH’s Word, the temptations and cravings of addiction can be stopped cold. When you are willing to obey and press into YHWH’s Holy Spirit all things are possible because you abide through the Messiah. (John 15:4; 1 Peter 3:7)

YHWH’s Word is powerful. Be practical. Use it like Yahshua [Jesus] did in the desert. Knowing His Word and spiritual principles is very important. You hold on to them and you speak them into your life! Hold on to Yahshua [Jesus] for He is the Word! Be willing to ask and to actively seek understanding. Ask the Holy Spirit your Counselor (John 14:26) to help you. There isn’t any power in what you don’t know, understand or believe. (Hosea 4:1, 6; Proverbs 29:18; 1 Timothy 1:12-14) If you do not exercise your authority (exousia) over the enemy you may as well not possess it, for it is worthless without your trust and the enemy will take full advantage of your condition of weakness. That is why so many that claim ‘Christ’ are in such a sorry spiritual condition. They refuse to obey and refuse to act in line with what they know, including following through with their personal mission as disciples of the Messiah. (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16; “Disciples of Messiah & the Authority of Man“; “Disciple: The Bible & Higher Authority“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
