Sin & the Law of Liberty

by John and Ruth Greene

sin-and-human-behavior-smA common definition of sin is missing the mark. Sin isn’t just about those who are totally ignorant or lack appreciation of Elohim’s [‘God’, YHWH] standard. Sin is a standard, a divine measuring stick. It’s about those that prefer to ignore the authority behind the measure, to place their authority above the authority of YHWH. The foundational problem with using a different measure is that the alternate measure doesn’t take into account that something else is hit as a substitute. Another definition of sin is in 1 John 3:4:

“Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.”

Sin is anything that is contrary to scripture and the working of the Holy [Sanctified, Set Apart] Spirit. People don’t always know the Word, so they don’t know what sin is, or they are listening to another authority for their understanding, a substitute. They may prefer traditions of man, even within religion that claims to be of ‘God.’ This kind of authority is lost in its own brand of iniquity apart from the Heavenly Father. Substitutes [antimessiah, antichrist] of false authority are not set apart to Him. When Elohim sets the standard, leaders of men may choose something else out grounded in outright rebellion. Others are simply grounded in their beliefs through ignorance and delusion. (“Breaking Strongholds of False Authority“; “The Antichrist & the War on Reality“)

A person may apply a personal definition of sin through externalizing that standard instead of applying scriptural knowledge personally. They find it easier to look and judge others rather than learn to abide with the Father themselves. They look to their own opinions instead of seeking to grow spiritually through the power of the Holy [Sanctified, Set Apart] Spirit. They don’t seek to become new through Messiah, (Colossians 3:1,10; Ephesians 4:24; 2 Corinthians 5:17) but to cover their shortcomings with pride and deception. How often is the Counselor (the Holy Spirit) rejected or redefined for the knowledge and understanding of man. (2 Corinthians 2:14, 4:4; Titus 3:5; “Listening to the Holy Spirit“)

The best definition for sin is found in 1 John 5:17:

“All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.”

arrow-mark-sinTo your Heavenly Father, your life is black and white, not shades of gray. If an action doesn’t rest firmly in Elohim’s Word and you work against it, this is sin. (Isaiah 59:2) Isaiah says that iniquity is what creates the division between YHWH and man. What is iniquity? (Matthew 7:21-23; Exodus 34:7; Isaiah 53:6; Ezekiel 18:20) Iniquity is sin that passes through generations. This could be through family lines, but is certainly not limited to the family. Iniquity started and has descended from the original couple, but iniquity is hardly limited by this. (“Understanding Sin“; “Is the Bible Losing Influence in the United States?“)

Regardless of degree, sin always has an effect. Separation from YHWH is the minimum effect. (Romans 1:28, 32; 1 Corinthians 6:9; 2 Peter 2:1; Titus 1:16) This separation always results in death. Adam was told that he would die. He was immediately separated from Elohim in a very real way, most notably in a spiritual sense. It took longer for him to die in the flesh. Sin brought death, a permanent corruption that could only be removed by Yahshua [Jesus]. (Romans 5:12, 6:23) Man is a sinner. The proof is that he dies. The world completely misses out on this because death is seen as entirely normal. People die every day, and it is reasoned that this will continue forever. They have no expectation of better, or even the desire for better. They don’t have a solution. (Isaiah 59:1-2; 2 Thessalonians 1:9; Matthew 25:41; “The Idolatry Factor“)

The remedy is life. (Romans 5:21) Yahshua [Jesus] is life. Union with Elohim is through the release of bondage to sin through Him. Belief is the answer. Belief is more than knowledge. It changes. It is heart relationship, honesty and openness to the Master alone. The Spirit of Elohim changes the heart and mind for the ones that will listen and abide in Messiah through the Holy Spirit. Few truly know the simplicity involved. Belief in Messiah through the Holy Spirit breaks the penalty of sin. (John 6:63, 11:25, 14:6, 17:3; “Freedom in Messiah Despite the World“)

bound-by-traditionWhat about those that fail to accept the real truth of the Messiah at hand? Instead, they parade about to a pale horse to YHWH’s truth, a contrivance that sounds similar — an antichrist or antimessiah substitute. (Mark 13:22) Multitudes of professed Christians are already spiritually dead. (Ephesians 2:1-3) They are not taught, nor do they seek to learn the truth of Elohim on their own. They prefer traditions of men, a learned compartment of boxed-in thinking. As a result, they never break the chains of death. Death may come to an imperfect and aging body unless one is alive when Messiah returns. (2 Thessalonians 2:3-12, 1 Thessalonians 5:14-18). Physical death is what so many fear, but death is simply a doorway to the presence of the Father, a place of rest until resurrection. Certainly, you like — even crave to keep your body. You’ve never known anything else. The world says that this life is all there is. The Bible says otherwise, but not simply as the religion of man says it is. (John 10:7-10; “Which Shepherd Do You Really Believe?“; “The False Shepherd & the True Shepherd“)

worldly law and orderThe world is oblivious, announcing peace and safety in its own ways. The labor pains of the Last Days are in process. The fruit is obvious. While this is happening, disciples are sanctified, not through empty words, but through living in Messiah through accurate knowledge. With the Holy Spirit, disciples can be preserved blameless in the protection of Elohim. (“YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“; “Trust YHWH, Not World Leaders“; “Abiding With YHWH in Quiet Places“)

When you are free, you are not afraid. You look to YHWH. You are not addicted to pleasing men. A disciple is a gatherer, commanded to rightly divide YHWH’s Word, not a scatterer. Without YHWH, the teachings of Yahshua [Jesus] and the power of the Holy Spirit, professed Christians are no better than clueless sheep. In fact, even the best of us are still called sheep. This sounds like a bad deal. Don’t kid yourself. It puts men and women right where they really are.

set-apart-Spirit-bannerThe Holy Spirit is your Teacher. (1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4:4) Each man stands or falls depending on his desire. Elohim is able to make every man stand if they are willing. So many churches have overlooked real liberty in Messiah. Each person needs to be fully convinced in his own mind and heart. (Romans 4:14; “Seeking a New Spirit“; “The Real Power Behind Baptism“)

“And receive him who is weak in the belief, not criticizing his thoughts. One indeed believes to eat all food, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. He that eats, let him not despise him who does not eat, and he that does not eat, let him not judge him who eats, for Elohim received him. Who are you that judges another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. But he shall be made to stand, for Elohim is able to make him stand.

One indeed judges one day above another, another judges every day alike. Let each one be completely persuaded in his own mind. He who minds the day, minds it to YHWH. And he who does not mind the day, to YHWH he does not mind it. He who eats, eats to YHWH, for he gives Elohim thanks. And he who does not eat, to YHWH he does not eat, and gives Elohim thanks.  For not one of us lives to himself, and not one dies to himself.  For both, if we live, we live unto the Master, and if we die, we die unto the Master. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Master’s.” – Romans 14:1-8, ISR98

“Each one of us, therefore, shall give account of himself to Elohim. Therefore let us not judge one another any longer, but rather judge this, not to put an obstacle or a stumbling-block in our brother’s way.” – Romans 14:12-13, ISR98 (1 Peter 4:5)

bible-smTo many leaders, the true operation of the Messiah in this world is truly dangerous. They don’t want to you to realize the truth of how the Law of Liberty really works. They need you too much. They don’t focus on security in the Messiah. They focus on temples and organizations of man. Your focus and importance is not to be on “the church.” Your focus is not on the idea of leadership by elevating yourself. Your focus is not on human governance. Your focus must be only on personal relationship in Messiah and bringing others that same knowledge and Spirit. A genuine disciple is to walk in love, sensitive to the spiritually weak. Yes, you are a child of YHWH Almighty, just as you are an heir through the Messiah. The Holy Spirit will continue to point out your weaknesses and illumine truth as you listen, or you will lose out. Regardless of any circumstance in life, you are not to ‘lord it over’ others. (Matthew 10:25; Mark 10:42)

Renewing comes, especially through prayer, through Elohim while living life with Him through the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:7; Colossians 1:21; Philippians 4:23) Your spiritual life isn’t about arriving at a certain destination in your life. Your life is a journey. Your spiritual transformation will not be complete under any circumstance until you pass off the scene, certainly not until the Messiah’s Return. Spiritual renewal is a lifelong process of abiding in the Messiah, through the power of the Holy Spirit. (1 John 3:2) There is a peace and delight that comes only by embracing the cause of Yahshua [Jesus] in a real and personal way. The comfort of the world with your way of thinking is not your concern. The purpose of Yahshua [Jesus] is. That single mindedness is part of abiding with Him. (1 Corinthians 10:25; “Wavering Between Two Opinions“; “Disciples: Focused on the Messiah & His Purpose“)

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of Elohim, and if children, also heirs – truly heirs of Elohim, and co-heirs with Messiah, if indeed we suffer with Him, in order that we also be exalted together.” – Romans 8:16-17, ISR98

love-feastIn those days, Jews and Gentiles were eating and worshiping together. Meetings for worship were often tied into meals, to ensure the well-being and unity of the body of the Messiah. The Jews and a few Gentiles were undoubtedly strong minded in their ways. Jews still tended to think in terms of what they had learned. As men and women, they tend to want to put over their ways on others. That is the way of the world that can be hard to put aside, but a necessary battle nonetheless. Yet by reading this passage you come to a strong realization that many were hanging on to the ways of Judaism. This was counter productive to the continuation to abide in Messiah. Disciples were no longer required to eat ‘kosher,’ in accord with the dictates of the Sanhedrin. Why? They were free of the laws of man, even the religious ones of the past that were not part of the Torah. The Pharisees, Sadducees and their successors had added to the Word of Elohim since Moses. (Acts 15:6-11) Keeping this in mind is the key to both the Jew and the Gentile, from a former priest to a temple prostitute. Instead of creating and fostering their own opinions and controversies, disciples were to be open-minded and considerate, respectful of one another. The congregation of Elohim comes from many different backgrounds. The requirement is to abide in Messiah and to share that with others, not to fight over petty things and arguments that no longer had any basis of fact or need. (Hebrews 10:19-25) They no longer live by animal sacrifices in the Temple, through the ways of false religion or through the machinations of pagan temple worship, nor by the ways and attitudes of sinful man, but through sanctified scripture, through the power of prayer in the Holy Spirit. Even first century disciples had a spiritual struggle at times. (“Are You a Christian First or Last?“)

proudHowever, sin must be mastered and the pride of man put down. Failure to change the heart and mind to the way of Messiah will only result in bitterness and jealous envy, the fruit of the world. It is an old battle. (Matthew 5:12) Today, each disciple of the Messiah shares in the battle. This battle is to make Elohim’s truth your own and to put down the old man, as you share the truth with others. Being in any church won’t do. If you aren’t meeting with people that have the same mindset about putting off the old man and seeking Bible truth, you are better off without them. (Matthew 24:4, 11, 24; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 15:33-34, 56-58; Titus 1:10-11; Romans 12:1-3; Ephesians 5:6; Galatians 6:7; 2 Thessalonians 2:10) While this seems harsh on the surface, ultimately, they are likely to pollute you or bring around to their way of thinking, just as the world seeks to do. A profession of faith doesn’t make Bible truth king. Personal spiritual discernment is vital. (Matthew 16:1-3; 2 Timothy 3:1-5; 1 Peter 1:14-16; 2 Peter 2:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22; Ephesians 4:14-15; Hebrews 5:12-14; 1 John 4:1-6) Discernment is not a gift as some would say, but a requirement for spiritual maturity. (“The Kingdom of YHWH & the Drive for Self-Importance“; “Discernment the World Doesn’t Have“)

“Then do not throw away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of patience, that having done the will of YAHWEH you may obtain the promise. For, the time is very short and He who is to come, will come, ‘and will not delay.’ ‘But the righteous shall live by faith;’ ‘yet if he draws back,’ ‘My soul is not pleased in him.’ But, we do not belong to those drawing back, which leads to perdition; but to the faith which restores our soul.” – Hebrews 10:35-39, HRB

Yes, you need confidence in your Savior! You don’t need to be downtrodden and beaten into dejection. You need confidence is your willingness and ability to continue. You don’t want to return to perdition, nor do you want others to give up Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah. Living in respect while putting Elohim’s Word first, takes all the earthly static out of the body of the Messiah. The gathering of Yahshua [Jesus] is interested in what Elohim says, not in the ways of remaining in sin or falling back into old patterns and habits. (“How YHWH Marks His People“)

filling-pewsThe larger picture is that meeting together isn’t about eating and holding on to the ways of the past, but about righteousness, peace, joy and edification in the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:19; 1 Cor 8:9-12) We are to build each other up. We are to build real relationships with people of like mind in Messiah. You don’t do this simple by stuffing your face at an event at church or by showing up and filling a seat. The body of the Messiah is about relationship that edifies through the Holy Spirit. The gathering of Messiah builds up in accurate knowledge without building up through worldly opinion and controversies. (Hebrews 10:26) To do otherwise, firmly rejects the Spirit of Elohim and condemns the followers to eternal death, the Lake of Fire. (Revelation 19:20; 20:15) Satan and his followers stand against the Spirit of YHWH. (Hebrews 10:33)

“For if we are willfully sinning after receiving the full knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice concerning sins, but he is ready for the fearful judgment and ‘zealous fire being about to consume the adversaries.’ For if he, who transgressed the law of Moses, died without mercies, at the mouth of two or three witnesses; how much worse punishment do you think will be thought worthy to receive, the one trampling the Son of YAHWEH, and having counted the blood of the covenant as common in which he was sanctified, and having insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who has said, ‘Vengeance belongs to Me; I will repay,’ says YAHWEH. And again, ‘YAHWEH will judge His people.’ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living Elohim.” – Hebrews 10:26-31, HRB

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
