What is Evil? The Jealousy of Nations & Skeptics

by John and Ruth Greene

twin towers genocide, the face of evilWith the tenth anniversary of the Twin Towers disaster, the discussion of evil has made the ranks in the United States media. Certainly, genocide falls into the class of evil, but neither genocide nor evil are new to mankind. So what is evil? It depends on whom you ask. Recently, the television program Frontline put this question to the test across religious and political lines. What was the result of this study?

“You know evil when you see it.”

“Evil is a personal experience.”

“Evil is determined by religion and exclusive behavior.”

Hm-m. All of this smacks of situational ethics, a battle you can never win. That is because this kind of thinking has a foundation that constantly changes and has no basis in truth or real meaning. This changing foundation can be used to mislead and manipulate to the advantage of worldly power. Can you continually agree with ‘official opinion of the moment’ through the shifting sands of time in a world full of disagreement? Should you? What is the solution? (“Religion & Rise in Opposition to Christians“; “Becoming Your Own God Through General Goodness?“; “The Idolatry Factor“; “Understanding Sin“)

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” – Luke 6:45, NKJV

'Moral principles' highlighted in green, under the heading 'Ethics'Perhaps, that is the problem with evil. Evil recreates what it is based on what a person wants evil to be based on a personal mold or a matter of opinion. Evil denies truth for a counterfeit, views that masquerade as truth, some ideas that pretend to ascend all the way to Heaven. Personal wounds, trauma and neglect distort human behavior and belief. Resentment and hatred always destroy, but mostly the person involved in the root of the attitude. This root is called a stronghold. (Psalm 62:1-12, 64:1-10, 68:9) The deeper truth is that evil denies YHWH and bolsters self while a time tested definition of truth exists in the Bible. Evil is always a choice, and you have the choice to believe it or not, thorny as the matter is to so many. Bible context and the understanding of the original language are necessary to combat the evil of doubt, rather than simply reading a translation or ‘cherry-picking’ scripture to make any personal point while ignoring context, a favorite of skeptics and unbelievers that claim to know better. (Genesis 6:1-13; Psalm 73:1, 78:1-4, 6-8; “Interfaith: Image of the Beast & the False Prophet“; “The Great Beast Seduction“; “Are You a Christian First or Last?“; “Living in an Apostate World“)

“Take heed that you separate yourselves from false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inside are ravening wolves. You will know to mark them by their fruit. Does anyone gather grapes from a thorn, or a fig from a brier? In this way, all beneficial trees bear honest fruit, but a worthless tree bears harmful fruit. A beneficial tree cannot bear harmful fruit, neither a worthless tree bear honest fruit. All trees that do not bear honest fruit are cut down and cast into fire. In this manner, by their fruit you will know them.

Not all that say to Me, ‘Master, Master,’ enter into the purpose of the Kingdom of Heaven. To the contrary, he that yields the purpose of My Father in Heaven. Many say to Me in that Day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and in Your Name cast out devils and in Your Name yielded many miracles? Then at that time I will agree with the authority of Heaven, them I never knew. You! Depart from Me ministers of wickedness.” – Matthew 7:15-23, direct translation

the skeptic“Let not any evil word go out from your mouth, but words that are good and useful for edification that it may impart a blessing to those who hear them. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of YAHWEH [through unbelief], by whom you were sealed to the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and anger, and wrath, and tumult, and evil speaking be put away from you, along with all malice.” – Ephesians 4:29-31, HRB (see also Ephesians 4:17-23, the new man)

“For YAHWEH gives wisdom; out of His mouth are knowledge and understanding. He lays up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to the ones who walk in integrity, to guard the paths of judgment, and He protects the way of His saints.” – Proverbs 2:6-8, HRB

(Matthew 5:17-18, 12:35, 15:13-19, 23:2-12, 24:3-5; Mark 7:20-23; Luke 21:8; John 3:20-21; Romans 2:19-23; Colossians 2:8-9)

Some try to say that the Elohim of Hosts creates evil, using these scriptures to justify their view:

Isaiah 45:7
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
I form the light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, the LORD, do all these things.
Isaiah refers also to the Eastern belief in two coexistent principles that continually struggle with each other. Elohim asserts His sovereignty over both. More importantly, the accurate contextual meaning of the Hebrew word bara (H1254) in this verse is to ‘cut off.’ Your Heavenly Father cuts off evil. He contrasts them as opposites. Any other usage of the word in this verse is poor translation and misunderstanding.
Exodus 32:14
And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto His people.
So the LORD relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.
YHWH’s anger blazed against His stiff-necked people. Yet, because Moses interceded for them, YHWH turned aside from the decision of immediate judgment or calamity (raah, H7451) that He had made on His people.
Joshua 23:15
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things…
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all the good things have come upon you which the LORD your God promised you, so the LORD will bring upon you all harmful things, until He has destroyed you from this good land which the LORD your God has given you.
Once again, Elohim is dealing with the stiff-necked. He wants to bring His promises to bear, but He must bring judgment and personal calamity for unrepentant behavior against His principles in the end in line with those same principles. (raah, H7451) Not everyone can continue doing exactly as they please without incurring His judgment. Eventually divine judgment will be rendered.
Judges 9:23
Then God sent an evil spirit…
God sent a spirit of ill will between Abimelech and the men of Shechem…
The key of this verse resides in the verb. (shalach, let depart, H7971) Elohim of Hosts allowed a spirit of Satan access between Abimelech and the men of Shechem, exactly as their hearts leaned. He turned His face from them and gave them up to reprobate minds: to follow their lusts, ill will, to cultivate envy and to ponder vengeance. Man is allowed to make choices, including cultivating discord and contention. YHWH’s action is a continuing effort to turn men and women to Him by allowing them to fail and to experience self-induced trials so that they will remember His goodness.
1 Samuel 16:14
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him.
A calamitous spirit was allowed to come because YHWH removed His protection. The distressing spirit came apart from the Father YHWH. Saul separated himself from YHWH and the Most High gave him the honor of personal choice, as He promises to all. Saul was backsliding and bringing calamity on himself.
2 Samuel 12:11
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house…
Thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will raise up adversity against you from your own house…
King David had been unrepentant for at least nine months. As a result he was in real spiritual danger because he had brought the curses of Deuteronomy on his household. (qum, H6965) David was not looking after family matters properly, but indulging himself and becoming more self-absorbed. His heart was not with YHWH. As a result, YHWH would allow him to reap what he had sown: rebellion and lust in the midst of a dysfunctional family.
1 Kings 9:9
…therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all this evil.
…therefore the LORD has brought all this calamity on them.
YHWH made promises to His people, blessings and curses, withdrawing His favor because of rebellion. Protection does not reside in disobedience and apostasy. YHWH departed from them. He allowed them to abide evil. (bo, H935) When disciples perform their part of the covenant, YHWH’s hand is not short to provide His favor.
1 Kings 14:10
Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam…
Therefore behold! I will bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam…
The original language indicates literally ‘therefore behold coming calamity,’ a warning to the house of Jeroboam. Translators built the sentence with good intent but failed to be accurate. YHWH’s name or a personal pronoun doesn’t exist here in the context. YHWH allows calamity because the house of Jeroboam abides evil. He removed His support completely.
2 Kings 6:33
…Behold, this evil is of the LORD…
…Surely this calamity is from the LORD…
The original language indicates that ‘calamity comes apart from Elohim.’ When you don’t abide in Father YHWH, you can’t expect to wait on Him or enjoy His favor or grace.
2 Kings 21:12
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle.
Therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘Behold, I am bringing such calamity upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whoever hears of it, both his ears will tingle.
The original language indicates ‘behold, abiding calamity will come upon…’ Translators built the sentence with good intent but failed to be literally accurate. YHWH’s name or a personal pronoun doesn’t exist here in the original context. The Father is expressing what will surely come because even the remnant of His people failed to obey Him.
2 Kings 22:16
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place…
Thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will bring calamity on this place …
The original language indicates ‘behold, abiding calamity will come upon…’ Translators built the sentence with good intent but failed to be literally accurate. YHWH’s name or a personal pronoun doesn’t exist here in the original context. Elohim is expressing what will surely come because of rebellion.
2 Chronicles 34:24
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof…
Thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will bring calamity on this place and on its inhabitants…
The original language indicates ‘behold, abiding calamity will come upon…’  Translators built the sentence with good intent but failed to be literally accurate. YHWH’s name or a personal pronoun doesn’t exist here in the original context. Elohim is expressing what will surely come because of rebellion.
Nehemiah 13:18
Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city?…
Did not your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.
This is curious. The translators attributed the disaster to YHWH, what in original context should have been gods that Israel made out of the market and business. By putting other gods before Elohim, they profaned the Sabbath and continued to risk YHWH’s wrath.
Jeremiah 4:6
Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.
Set up the standard toward Zion. Take refuge! Do not delay! For I will bring disaster from the north, and great destruction.
The original language indicates ‘be strong and do not delay for I will abide calamity from out of the dark…’ – obviously apart from YHWH.
Jeremiah 6:19
Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people…
Hear, O earth! Behold, I will certainly bring calamity on this people – the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not heeded My words nor My law, but rejected it.
The original language indicates ‘behold, I allow abiding calamity upon this people…’ He is giving them up to a reprobate mind because they have rejected Him.
Jeremiah 11:11
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them
Therefore thus says the LORD: “Behold, I will surely bring calamity on them which they will not be able to escape; and though they cry out to Me, I will not listen to them.
YHWH’s people had lost relationship with Him. The original language indicates ‘behold, I allow abiding calamity upon them…’ Elohim was finished with them because they refused to listen.
Jeremiah 25:29
For, lo, I begin to bring evil …
For behold, I begin to bring calamity on the city which is called by My name, and should you be utterly unpunished?
Literally, ‘Behold, I cast as profane a good for nothing city that claims to bear My authority…’ He has rendered judgment based on His righteousness.
Jeremiah 35:17
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them:
Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the doom that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken to them but they have not heard, and I have called to them but they have not answered.
Once again, Elohim will allow or abide judgment on Judah and Jerusalem in line with the curses in Deuteronomy 28. There is a cause and effect to the behavior of people that rebel against YHWH. YHWH’s people were not listening to Him and He removed His favor from them. It’s that simple.
Jeremiah 44:2
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah…
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘You have seen all the calamity that I have brought on Jerusalem and on all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them…
Literally, ‘you have seen for yourselves the whole of the calamity that abides [departs] on Jerusalem…’ The calamity was result of their rebellion, their drawing away from Elohim Almighty.
Jeremiah 45:5
…behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD…
And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I will bring adversity on all flesh,” says the LORD. “But I will give your life to you as a prize in all places, wherever you go.
Once again, YHWH abides calamity on rebellion, He does not defend it.
Jeremiah 49:37
…I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:
For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies and before those who seek their life. I will bring disaster upon them, My fierce anger,’ says the LORD; And I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them.
Literally, ‘I, Myself, Elam will dismay in the face of their adversaries, in the face of those who search for their flesh, abiding calamity on them My own burning anger,’ says YHWH. I will allow the sword to depart, pursuing until destruction.’ Elohim is angry and will allow calamity on the self-interested flesh of those that oppose Him. YHWH will not favor them with His grace, but has given them up to their own devices.
Micah 1:12
…. evil came down from the LORD
For the inhabitant of Maroth pined for good, but disaster came down from the LORD to the gate of Jerusalem.
The [bitter] inhabitant of Palestine is afflicted for good, certainly calamity came out by the agreement of YHWH to the gate of the hill of Jerusalem.
Micah 2:3
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I devise an evil
Behold, against this family I am devising disaster…
Once again, translators put words in the mouth of YHWH that He does not say. He forecasts calamity against those that create iniquity, (chashab, H2803) because He has removed His favor. He is not One with evil.

This is, after all, the point behind all scripture. YHWH, Elohim of Hosts, is not part of evil or rebellion to His Word. He urges all mankind to seek Him actively, to line up their lives with His purpose so that they can avoid affliction and destruction, which will ultimately come to rebellious unbelievers. (Matthew 7:21-23; John 14:12; 1 Corinthians 5:9-13; 2 Corinthians 6:14; 2 John 1:9-11; 2 Thessalonians 3:6; James 1:22-26; Revelation 20:11-15) Plainly put, when the correct understanding of the Bible is your authority, nothing else can take away its authority. This is what makes sanctified, set-apart disciples of the Messiah so dangerous to the world. (“Foundation of Salvation“; “Life: Are You Building on Sand?“; “The Role of Authority in Your Life“; “Disciples & the Authority of Man“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
