The Power of Prayer Depends On You

by John and Ruth Greene

fig-bearing-fruitYahshua [Jesus] continually ministered to the disciples on things that they did not know, just as He ministers to us today. On a particular morning, Yahshua [Jesus] noticed a fig tree that didn’t have any fruit, which He promptly cursed. (Mark 11:13-14) On their return by that way (after cleansing the Temple), the disciples noticed the fig tree had withered to the roots. (“A Hidden Lifestyle Message from Messiah“; “Disciple: Are You Bearing Fruit?“)

“ And Yahshua [Jesus] answering, said to them, “Have belief in Elohim. For truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says, shall be done, he shall have whatever he says. Because of this I say to you, whatever you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them. And whenever you stand praying, if you hold whatever against anyone, forgive, so that your Father in the heavens shall also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither shall your Father in the heavens forgive your trespasses.” – Mark 11:22-26, ISR98

The Master was teaching His disciples what prayer was meant to be. A prayer that moves mountains is for the fruitfulness of YHWH’s Kingdom. It would seem that it is impossible to move a mountain, much less throw it into the sea. You may well see a mountain as an obstacle in your life or in the lives of others cast into the sea to be cleansed or forgotten*. He used this picture to say that Elohim [YHWH] can do anything. He will answer your prayers, but not as a result of your positive mental attitude. You must be a believer. You must not hold grudges against another. You must not pray with selfish motives. Your request must be for the good of YHWH’s Kingdom. (“Prayer & Life in Messiah“; “YHWH’s Prayer Shawl of Protection“; “Is Your Forgiveness Real?“)

To pray effectively, you need trust in your Heavenly Father, not in the object of your request. When you focus only on your prayer request you are likely to be left with nothing because your trust is in the object rather than your Father. Yahshua [Jesus] is our example for prayer. “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You” (Mark 14:36; Matthew 6:5-14) Prayers are often motivated by personal interests and desires. This is a natural expression of the way we were created.  As people that listen to other people, we like to hear that we can have anything, but Yahshua [Jesus] prayed in line with YHWH’s interests. Elohim’s higher purpose and need was always in mind. How is it with you? Really? (“Spiritual Fruit & Renewing Your Mind“; “Disciple: Renewing the Mind“)

mountain into the seaWhen a Christians prays, he or she should pray for the desires of his heart, which must be in line with YHWH’s Kingdom. This is what spiritual maturity is about. As a disciple matures and learns Elohim’s purpose from the Bible and through the Set-Apart the Sanctified Holy Spirit, his purpose becomes one with Elohim’s purpose. (Hosea 4:6) A sanctified disciple wants YHWH’s Will over his own. Check yourself to see if your prayers focus on the interests of YHWH. You may well discover that in the past that you have unknowingly challenged the authority of Elohim. (“The Bible & Higher Authority“; “Disciples of Messiah  & the Authority of Man“; “The Real Meaning of Romans 13“)

The religious leaders challenged the authority of Yahshua [Jesus], just as many leaders do today. (Mark 11:27-28) “And Yahshua [Jesus] answering, said to them, ‘I shall ask you one question, and answer Me, and I shall say to you by what authority I do these: The immersion of Yoḥanan [John] – was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me.’ And they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He shall say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men’ – they feared the people, for all held that Yoḥanan [John] was a prophet indeed. And answering they said to Yahshua [Jesus], ‘We do not know.’ And Yahshua [Jesus] answering, said to them, ‘Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these.'” – Mark 11:29-33, ISR98

The religious leaders asked the Master who had the authority to chase away the merchants and money changers in the Temple. The question was a clever device. If they said John’s authority was from YHWH, they risked stepping outside their own standards of blasphemy. If they admitted that John’s authority was his own, they would dismiss a man that many believed was a prophet, losing the trust of their followers. These leaders were not after truth, but they wanted to get rid of Yahshua [Jesus] because He threatened their authority. Those that heard what Yahshua [Jesus] said were amazed at how compelling His messages and parables were. He taught the Word of YHWH, using compelling teaching. Yahshua [Jesus] was in His Father and YHWH was in Him. The Holy Spirit is in YHWH and in Him. They were and are Elohim. In the same way, the message of scripture and Spirit only gets through to those that are willing to listen, to abide in trust. (John 15:1-7) Are you abiding in Messiah? (John 14:6, 17; “Abiding in Trust“; “Abiding with YHWH in Quiet Places“)

Now, to keep matters in context, let’s touch on why the cleansing of the Temple is revealed to us in Mark 11, in line with the scripture around it.

“And they came to Yerushalayim [ Jerusalem]. Yahshua [Jesus], entering into the Set-apart Place [Temple], began to drive out those who bought and sold in the Set-apart Place, and overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those selling doves. And He did not allow anyone to carry a vessel through the Set-apart Place. And He was teaching, saying to them, ‘Has it not been written, ‘My House shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a ‘den of robbers.'” – Mark 11:15-17, ISR98

moneychanger idolatryThe Jewish leaders had placed a mountain of man within the Temple dedicated to YHWH. In doing this, these leaders had effectively dedicated the Temple to themselves, as well as a large body of teaching outside of scripture. Yahshua [Jesus] came into the Temple to remove the wicked root that mankind had placed within. He showed YHWH’s displeasure at their wickedness. The wickedness was cast out. In the same way, all of these corruptions of the Temple would be dried up from the roots. The Temple had been judged, just as the fig tree was. These practices and those that continued to uphold them were destined for destruction, fulfilled as Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed by the Roman General Titus. That is why the Master gave us the message in Mark 11 to “have faith in Elohim” rather than man. (“Taking YHWH’s Mountain“; “Moving Mountains in Your Life“; “Disciple: Learning to Live in Trust“)

*Consider this idea for a moment. (Revelation 8:8, 13:1-7, 20:13) The mountain is Elohim’s Kingdom, YHWH’s Holy Mountain, which believers are able to move through action and prayer into the sea of mankind, dispersed among mankind to glorify His Kingdom as Babylon and the Beast are revealed to all. This is what each disciple of the Messiah is to do to his or her fullest as the completion of our purpose in Matthew 28:18-20. – John Greene

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
