Strongholds & the Armor of YHWH

by John Greene

“Put on the complete armor of Elohim, for you to have power to stand against the schemes of the devil. Because we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against authorities, against the world-rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual matters of wickedness in the heavenlies. Because of this, take up the complete armor of Elohim, so that you have power to withstand in the wicked day, and having done all, to stand. ” – Ephesians 6:11-13, ISR98

God's WordIn the eyes of multitudes, the division of kingdoms that scripture makes isn’t real, but imaginary. The world is simply what it is. Satan and his demons would love for you to believe this. So would the secular and scientific authorities of the world. They could only hope that you would give them the acceptance and power that they crave. In the United States, roughly 60% of Christians don’t believe Satan is real. That is the result of a recent study by the Barna Group. Another 8% don’t know what to believe.  Because of their reasoning, many Christians often decide that spiritual armor isn’t necessary or real, or perhaps, that somehow they are protected by the ‘church.’ In the United States, roughly half believe in the divinity of Jesus [Yahshua] and 70% believe that the Holy Spirit is a symbol instead of a living force. Later in the same study, it is noted the figures on Satan and the Holy Spirit are close to 50% belief instead. 30% don’t believe in a division between the two spiritual kingdoms or the need to take a position on the matter. Confusion and doubt reign among many in the realm of human belief in America. (John 8:43-33; 1 Corinthians 14:33; 1 John 3:8, 5:21) Even pastors and those that teach are not immune. Clearly, multitudes of professed Christians are in danger of spiritual shipwreck because of what they see as imaginary forces. If they threw away any more Bible truth, their religion would quickly become quite useless indeed, much as Yahshua [Jesus] said in Matthew 7:15-23. (Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 12:13; 2 Corinthians 3:4–18; “Sin & the Law of Liberty“; “Christians: Focused on the Messiah & His Purpose“)

“Not all that say to Me, ‘Master, Master,’ enter into the purpose of the Kingdom of Heaven. To the contrary, he that yields the purpose of My Father in Heaven. Many say to Me in that Day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and in Your Name cast out devils and in Your Name yielded many miracles? Then at that time I will agree with the authority of Heaven, them I never knew. You! Depart from Me ministers of wickedness.” – Matthew 7:15-23, direct translation

Of course, most Christians know their Savior as ‘Lord,’ but the scripture above is translated correctly without using worldly titles that translators have used and accepted for so long. The reality is that Yahshua [Jesus] didn’t use or use the pagan title ‘lord,’ nor would He mention it. Still, plenty of Christians actually do and will call out to Him as ‘Lord, Lord’ when times get tough. Most don’t know otherwise. This is a worldly stronghold of ‘faith’ that millions have settled for. (“Heavenly Father Has A Name“)

“So Yahshua [Jesus] answering, said to them, ‘Beware that nobody deceives you because many will come in my authority saying ‘I am anointed.’ So many will be deceived.” – Matthew 24:4-5, direct translation

Deception is exactly what is happening. Unhappily, many deceived Christians are unlikely to have a covenant with the real Heavenly Father. They don’t really know Him. Instead, He is ‘God’ to them, just as Muslims, Hindus and many others use for their preferred deity of choice. They have a relationship with something else, or perhaps through the ‘church’ only, in agreement with the traditions of men and the condemned demons. This is a sad state of affairs. (“Deceptions of Ages: How People are Deceived“; “Incentives of Deception“)

On the other hand, the covenant between YHWH and each sanctified disciple is not a dead thing. Yet, it is conditional, just as it was with His nation Israel. Most rejected YHWH for other gods as the nations about them did. (Luke 22:20; Romans 5:12-21, 10:5; Galatians 3:12; Hosea 6:7; Deuteronomy 28:1-68) Elohim’s covenant is living, active – enacted through trust and relationship – provided through the Messiah and the guidance of the Sanctified [Set Apart, Holy] Spirit. (John 3:16, 17:2, 6; Hebrews 9:24; Romans 1:17, 5:1; James 2:17; 1 John 2:4-6; 2 Corinthians 6:16) Spiritual warfare is real, a factor that you see every day, even though you may not fully realize it. The daily battle continues for the mind and heart of each person that has ever lived on earth. More are taking the side of Satan, often without realizing it. (Mark 12:29-30; “The Abomination That Causes Desolation“; “The Antichrist & the War on Reality“; “Understanding Sin“)

battlefield of the mind is not a gameIn an imperfect world, life experiences and conditioning are the glue that creates and holds demonic captivity, the strongholds that bind men and women. You may listen to what you believe are your own thoughts and emotions. Often, these are conditioned or gleaned directly from those around you. At times, you may feel confused and unable to think. (John 10:10; 2 Corinthians 11:14; 1 John 4:1) Few Christians are immune from the feeling that they live in a wilderness. (Matthew 4:1-25; Isaiah 40:3, 43:19, 51:3; Ezekiel 34:25-27) You can develop expectations and when life doesn’t go according to plan, spirits of bitterness and anger are given a place to roost. You can complain and rebel against the provision of your Heavenly Father. (Proverbs 16:1, 19:21; Isaiah 58:11; Jeremiah 29:11) With your mouth and your behavior, you may show a complete lack of appreciation and understanding. You may be oppressed, acting out in anger. You may put yourself first, setting yourself up over YHWH. Today this idolatry is pervasive. (James 3:1-18; 2 Corinthians 4:13; Proverbs 4:24) Strife and unrest bloom in relationships, even as hypocrisy does. This kind of hypocrisy is a stronghold of Satan that always destroys and is a principle tool of Satan today. (Matthew 6:12; 1 Corinthians 10:13; James 1:12-15; “Temptations & Tough Choices“; “Battling Satan With the Word“; “Credentials of a Disciple of Messiah“)

castle watchtowerStrongholds of the mind and heart easily hold you captive to the world and it’s way of thinking, built on error and deception. Faulty thinking patterns become your thinking, or always have been. You may even fail to recognize this truth, believing that you have lived and are living in your Heavenly Father’s abundance while dwelling in the dark kingdom with the attitudes of the world. Much of Christianity lives in this way, grounded in the lifestyle of the world as the significance in their life. It is reasoned that somehow, this apparently abundant lifestyle must be YHWH’s Will because that is all that these Christians know or understand. Those Christians are living in Egypt, the Babylon of falsehood and false expectations while giving YHWH the credit for such things. (Philippians 4:8; 1 John 2:18-19; 1 Peter 2:9; James 5:16; Hebrews 4:15-16; “How YHWH Marks His People“; “Breaking the Hold of Addictions through Temptation“; “Breaking the Hold of the World: Addiction and Distorted Behavior“)

Because you live in the land of false expectations, you will continue to reap a bittersweet harvest. In order for your Father to give you what you need and what He wants you to have, a period of transition exists that largely depends on you. The nation of Israel had a period of transition that many people deeply resented. They roamed the desert for 40 years instead of enjoying a brief journey to the Promised Land. YHWH could not give them the Promised Land they longed for because of their spiritual condition, coupled with their conditioned thinking and behavior. (Deuteronomy 8:2) They remained grounded in mistrust, established in fear, grounded in the conditioning of Egypt. (Exodus 13-14; Numbers 14:1-4; Psalm 37:7-8; “Learning from Snakes in the Wilderness“; “Rest in YHWH’s Lead When You Find Yourself in Exile“)

in exileThe time of transition that old Israel spent in the desert is called out in Psalm 106 as ‘the pleasant land’ in many translations. This is a time of YHWH’s exclusive provision when many struggle and fight. They struggle because they are used to having the lifestyle of the past exactly as they expected or desired. They live and plan in the ignorant conditioning of the past. Living in the desert for 40 years was a time of YHWH’s exclusive provision, a provision that could have been pleasant if some members of old Israel would have been willing to grasp it. (Habakkuk 2:3) They could not see the season of Elohim’s [YHWH] provision as His pleasant land of provision because of past conditioning and the deception of their minds and hearts. Have you ever considered a desert as ‘pleasant?’ A righteous relationship with YHWH makes a desert pleasant when He is the Oasis. (Psalm 103:1-5, 106:7-13) Instead, multitudes chose deviancy and rebellion (separation from YHWH), rejecting His freedom through love for their own idea of freedom. (Luke 10:27 18:1; Galatians 6:9; Isaiah 61:1; Psalm 106:33-45) Truth is what tears down error and deception. (Psalm 9:9, 18:2, 27:1, 37:39) Pray about your transition into what YHWH honestly wants for you. (“Verbalizing Divine Protection“; “Going through the Valleys of Difficulty“)

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not fight according to the flesh. For the weapons we fight with are not fleshly but mighty in Elohim for overthrowing strongholds, overthrowing reasonings and every high matter that exalts itself against the knowledge of Elohim, taking captive every thought to make it obedient to the Messiah” – 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, ISR98

Resentment, judgment, anger, hatred and unforgiveness through pride become bitterness, which comes about by putting yourself above your Heavenly Father. (Ephesians 4:31; Hebrews 12:15; Romans 12:18-19) Disciples must stand firm and watch, avoiding temptation or stumbling. (Luke 21:36; 1 Corinthians 10:12-13, 16:13; Jude 1:24; James 4:7) The armor of YHWH is vital to understanding the attacks of Satan the accuser in your personal walk with Him through the Master and Messiah Yahshua [Jesus]. (“The Truth About Anger“; “Disease & Spiritual Roots“; “Attitude and the Disciple of Messiah“; “Source & Solution of Temptations“; “Doctrine Is What You Do“; “Is Your Forgiveness Real?“)

The Armor of YHWH

God's armorThe belt (cingulum) was crucial to the effectiveness of a Roman soldier. The belt held the scabbard and the sword. In some cases, strips of protective leather were attached to the belt, offering cover for the lower body. The belt of truth is the foundation of what a disciple lives by, encompassing like YHWH track of righteousness. It is knowledge of scriptural principles and living by YHWH’s Word. (John 4:24; Ephesians 6:14; Isaiah 11:5; Colossian 3:8-10; 2 Thessalonians 2:10, 5:21; “YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“; “Victory in Spiritual Battle“; “The Armor of Elohim“)

A Roman breastplate provided essential protection, deflecting the blows of the enemy. The breastplate of righteousness protects disciples from the onslaught of battle and the judgment of the enemy. (Philippians 3:9; Psalms 94:15, 119:172; Proverbs 2:7-8, 11:4; Isaiah 59:1-2; 1 Kings 3:9; Jeremiah 23:6) The righteousness of YHWH’s Word that is sounded into your heart is your shield that protects you from false teaching and the impurity of the world. (Romans 12:1-2; Ezekiel 33:13; “Secession of the Heart“)

“The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.” – Isaiah 32:17, NKJV

brotherhood of protection

The Roman shield (scutum) was a very large shield, as much as 3 feet wide and 3’6” tall. When fighting alone, it offered a great deal of protection, allowing the soldier to duck behind it or to raise it above as needed. The shape of the shield deflected the full force of the attack. In groups of rectangular arrays (testudo), soldiers were able to deflect a massive perimeter attack from the side or above. The shield of faith (conviction, belief) protects disciples from direct attacks, blocking the attack of Satan and his minions. The strength of the shield allows the soldier to shove the enemy back. (1 John 5:4-5; Ephesians 6:16; 1 Peter 1:5; Psalm 3:2-3, 33:20, 35:1-3, 9) The shield of faith can become a portable entrenchment, an unstoppable cooperative force. In the same way, belief is based on solid evidence. This conviction or ‘faith’ is rooted in trust. (Ephesians 2:8; 1 Corinthians 12:9) This shield can protect you in the middle of trial and is your first line of defense. (Matthew 4:10-11; “YHWH is Your Shield and Salvation“; “Who Is Your Source?“)

A fully armed Roman soldier has shoes and leg armor. These defenses allow you to deal with the battle in front of you without being cut down or immobilized. The stand for peace may be offensive or to stand firm in a defensive posture. In the Hebrew language, ‘shalom’ often corresponds to the Greek word ‘eirene,’ meaning peace, prosperity or well-being. You certainly need well-protected legs to contend for YHWH’s Kingdom, to keep from being cut down by the enemy. The leg armor represents the gospel of peace and well-being, the armor of well-being that protects your legs as you stand firm, continuing in belief and trust, wholly devoted to your Father. (Ephesians 6:15; Romans 10:14-15; Isaiah 2:2-4; “Ambassadors for Messiah? Trust in His Promises“)

roman soldierThe helmet of salvation, along with accurate Bible knowledge, resists demonic forces that seek to fight their way into your mind and then, your heart. The soldier of the Messiah must repent and be saved through conviction and trust. The salvation is not from you, but like the rest of the armor of YHWH, provided by Him when you accept the sacrifice of His Son Yahshua [Jesus] and operate in the Holy Spirit. This is a free gift, but this gift needs your reciprocation! (Acts 2:38; Philippians 2:5; 1 Peter 4:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:8; 1 Corinthians 2:16; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5; Ephesians 4:14-16; Isaiah 59:16-17; Psalm 140:7) Through this salvation, the disciple is no longer condemned to destruction. (Matthew 10:22; 1 Corinthians 1:18) Your salvation depends on your decision and willingness to endure to the end. (Matthew 10:22) Disciples of Messiah continue by the renewing of the mind through the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 12:2; 1 Thessalonians 5:8-11; Psalm 27:1; “The Beginnings of Faith and Salvation“)

roman swordThe Roman sword (gladius) is what initially spread the Roman Empire. The sword was the main means of attack, followed by other tools: the dagger (pugio), Spear (pila) and lead-filled darts (plumbatae). The sword of the Spirit is YHWH’s Word, enacted by the Holy Spirit. Like scripture, the Holy Spirit is a double-edged sword that directs and protects, both offensive and defensive. (Hebrews 4:12-13; 2 Corinthians 6:7; Psalm 149:4-6) Through the Word of YHWH, soldiers of the Messiah counter demonic attack with truth. (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10) YHWH arms you with strength and through the Messiah and the Holy Spirit, perfects your way. (Psalm 18:32-35; Zechariah 4:6; Romans 11:36) The battle that disciples of Messiah face is close combat rather than long-range warfare. (James 1:2-4; Acts 14:22) Christians deal with the physical world directly, trusting in the protection of YHWH and using the power that we are given to accomplish His purpose as a witness to those that will listen. Faithful disciples of the Messiah can be confident that what YHWH has purposed, He will do. (Isaiah 46:11; Matthew 24:13; Romans 8:31) Disciples of Messiah work in partnership with the Holy Spirit to forward the purpose of YHWH’s Kingdom as a witness to the world of man. (“The Act of Being a Watchman“; “What is Evil? The Jealousy of Nations & Skeptics“)

Rising Christian MinistryA disciple of the Messiah lives in the spiritual manner and life example of the Messiah as Master, not as someone that pretends or simply says so he or she is a Christian. The indwelling of the Messiah through the Holy Spirit is not a one way proposition or an automatic event. Abiding with Messiah requires obedience and a measure of effort through submission. Your personal heart condition and the plight of mankind are not simply about “more faith.” You have been given everything you need. Stepping out in trust is what is needed. Living in the Messiah through the Holy Spirit is about repentance, forgiveness, sincerity and spiritual fruit: the foundational condition of the heart, YOUR HEART. (“Healing: The Beginning of Love“; “The Real Meaning of Romans 13“; “Psalm 91: Lifestyle & Protection“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
