Attitude & the Disciple of Messiah

by John and Ruth Greene

attitude is everythingWhen you dwell on a thought enough, that thought eventually becomes an action. Because of this reality, a thought can be truly destructive. When you aren’t paying attention or are misled, you don’t always see the harm or the evil in a thought. Over time, a thought becomes a mindset, a stronghold that grows to fill your heart. Once, Ruth fell into a snow drift in New York. As she stepped down the back deck stairs she fell into a drift of snow that fully covered her. She had to fight her way out. It wasn’t a laughing matter because she was in over her head as snow collapsed around her and on her. That snow was overwhelming. (Matthew 4:1-11; 1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Timothy 2:22) The result of continual thinking overcomes you in much the same way. Thinking starts with temptation. Over time, temptation gives way to words and then action. Where evil and rebellion to the Heavenly Father are involved, sin is created. Sin involves your life and consumes you like a huge snowdrift that weighs you down. (“Remember Diligent Faith“; “Wavering Between Two Opinions“)

“Let no one say when he is enticed, ‘I am enticed by Elohim,’ for Elohim is not enticed by evil matters, and He entices no one. But each one is enticed when he is drawn away by his own desires and trapped. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin. And sin, when it has been accomplished, brings forth death.” – James 1:13-15, ISR98

Evil thoughts and conduct are easy to blame on others, a favorite pastime:

”It is the other persons fault;”
“I could not help it;”
“Everybody is doing it;”
“It was just a mistake;”
”Nobody is perfect;”
“The devil made me do it;”
“I was pressured into it;”
“I didn’t know it was wrong;”
“God is tempting me.”

family strife stressShifting the blame doesn’t work. A disciple of the Messiah is full answerable for his or her own wrongs and confesses them in prayer while asking for forgiveness – while forgiving self. (Psalm 27:1; Isaiah 60:19-22; John 1:1-14) This is not about shame and guilt the way the world sees it. This is about your personal relationship, your eternal standing before YHWH. This is about cleansing and purifying your spirit, your trust in the Elohim of Hosts and the sacrifice of Messiah. You grow in grace or you grow in disgrace. (“Disciple: The Pattern of Your Life“)

“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own Will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.” – James 1:16-18

angry parentWhen you go through pressures in life, you may grow resentful or angry through disappointment. Life doesn’t go your way even though you may have had the best of intentions. YHWH says that when you persevere through the Holy Spirit, your experience results in a far superior end than what you would have otherwise experienced. (Ephesians 4:30; 1 John 2:19; Revelation 2:2) You don’t like a trial whether you cause that trial or not. Even so, you don’t give up or stop living for your Father because you know the truth. You love and respect Him. Your fullness in Messiah is brought out through your trust by the Word of Truth. You have been redeemed through the riches of His grace, His divine favor. (John 14:26; Ephesians 1:7-13; 1 Corinthians 6:19, 13:1-3)

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” – James 1:2-4, NKJV

small Bible studyWhen you seek anything through Father YHWH, you need to be prepared to be patient. That is what He requires. You can lead what you see as a perfectly upright life. You will still have trials, but not necessarily because you have done something wrong. You will have lots of questions along the way. YHWH’s answer is to trust Him, to look to Him through scripture and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. To do otherwise is to live in doubt. (John 16:7-15; 2 Peter 3:9, 15; 1 Timothy 4:10; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Galatians 1:10; Romans 8:26)

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of Elohim, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it shall be given to him. But he should ask in belief, not doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For that man should not think that he shall receive whatever from the Master – he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” – James 1:5-8, ISR98

thinkingWhen you are humbled through the circumstances of the world, you are exalted by your Heavenly Father. Disciples that aren’t in high position in the world should be glad. They are great in the sight of YHWH, more likely to endure. Sure, you hear about how great wealth is because you can spend it on ”spreading God’s Kingdom.’ Realistically, how often does this really happen among most men and women? The desire for wealth quickly becomes an Ananias and Sapphira endgame, a death-dealing deception. (Acts 5:1-10) Status and wealth are the pride of the world, and easily misused. When you are proud and wealthy, you are likely to fear losing that wealth and, as a result, are ensnared by it. The pride of wealth is eventually humiliated by the fact that wealth and status will soon pass away like the flowers of the field. (Matthew 13:6; Mark 4:18-20; Revelation 7:16, 14:18) Worldly pursuits are burned away by withering heat of YHWH’s judgment because they don’t pass the test of His Kingdom. (Matthew 6:24; John 18:36; 1 John 2:15-18) What a man trusts becomes the root of his own curse when that trust isn’t in YHWH Almighty. What is in your heart is what matters to YHWH, not what is in your bank account. Imagine that!

“Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away. For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.” – James 1:9-11

proud manHow easy it is to forget about what qualities that you need to be pleasing to YHWH, to pass through trials as He guides you. (Galatians 5:1, 22-26) When you talk too much and listen too little, you tell others that you think your ideas are much more important. In order to help others, you must be willing to listen. In medical training, Ruth learned to use a “mental stopwatch” on her mouth. Think first before you speak, allowing others to speak as needed. Keep track of how you listen in the presence of others. Even worldly psychiatrists have learned that listening is required if there is to be any hope of understanding, let alone relating to someone else. (Proverbs 10:19, 14:17, 16:32, 17:27) YHWH’s Word has a deeper purpose and is much more beneficial than worldly knowledge. (Galatians 5:16-17, 19-21; 2 Peter 3:3-4)

“So then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, or the wrath of man does not work the righteousness of Elohim.” – James 1:19-21, ISR98

battlefield of the mindAnger and similar qualities don’t produce the Heavenly Father’s righteousness. Anger helps nobody. Anger exalts self ahead of YHWH. It springs from fear and anchors fear in your life. It is selfish and self-serving. You will not win an argument through anger since you risk losing yourself, even eternal life. Anger separates you from others and it will separate you from YHWH. It never unites or encourages. We are to turn aside from the filth of mankind, the wickedness of the world. Instead, a disciple must receive YHWH’s Word instead of the ways of man. How often do each of us, by listening to the world, reap the fruit of what has been sown? You do have the choice as to whether you will receive the curse of nations and whether you will cling to those that have already been judged. (Romans 12:1-2; Colossians 3:8; Acts 13:26; Ephesians 4:22, 1:13; Psalm 37:8; Proverbs 14:29; Deuteronomy 28:15-68)

“Humble yourselves, then, under the mighty hand of Elohim, so that He exalts you in due time, casting all your worry upon Him, for He is concerned about you. Be sober, watch, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in the belief, knowing that the same hardships are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” – 1 Peter 5:6-9, ISR98

“But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” – James 1:12-25, NKJV

examine - mirror of scriptureBeing a disciple of the Messiah isn’t a mindless venture. Self-examination is required so that you can grow to spiritual maturity through love and devotion to the Father. (1 Corinthians 2:14) Do you trust YHWH and show this in your prayers? Do you eagerly, lovingly and confidently serve your Heavenly Father? Do you have humility and the joy of the Holy Spirit? Do you search others out with brotherly love? Do you recognize Yahshua [Jesus] as your High Priest? These are useful questions to help you in your life walk as you seek to be a new person in the power of YHWH’s Spirit. (Colossians 3:1, 10; Ephesians 4:24; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Titus 3:5)

Humility – Matthew 23:12; 1 Peter 5:6; Philippians 2:3-11; Galatians 6:7; Romans 12:3
Joy – Matthew 25:21; John 16:24, 33; Luke 15:10; Romans 14:17; Colossians 1:11

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
