The Struggle for Purity of Heart

by John and Ruth Greene

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are Spirit, and they are life.” – John 6:63, NKJV

mikvah-2Around the time of the birth of Yahshua [Jesus], the Jews had become bound in ritual. Primary in that ritual life was the ‘mikvah’, a bathing ritual. To the Jew, this was a means of cleansing from defilement to ‘kodesh’ or holiness. The mikvah bathing ritual, the Roman-period Jew believed, was a method of separation, the way to be set apart for sacred purpose or consecration. In this way, the Jews believed that they were set apart through ‘Havdalah.’ It was taught that this is a mystical transformation into holiness. This was the only way that they believed that they could be holy. Whether a Jew was ritually pure or impure was central to the core of Jewish life. Impurity made entrance into the Temple impossible, which in turn, made sacrificial offering inaccessible. Jewish leaders and scribes had turned the freedom of YHWH into bondage through ritual and mystical ceremony, continually adding to the Mosaic Law, even as they believed they were spiritually liberated. (Matthew 23:25-38)

Babylon captivity IsraelCounter to the trust of King David, post-Babylon leadership grew apart from YHWH. They didn’t have trust in a personal spiritual relationship and as a result, neither did the people. They so firmly believed in their system that, in general, they were unwilling or unable to see opportunity when Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah appeared on the scene. (Psalm 51:1-2, 119:9; Isaiah 1:1-31; Amos 3:3) He was rejected because He did not raise up a new or reformed nation of YHWH’s people in a national and military sense. Instead, Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah came to insure personal salvation; that all people had the potential for a personal relationship with YHWH through His sacrifice, aided by the Holy Spirit. The truth was to be told to all the world before the end would come, ushering in Father YHWH’s Kingdom. (Matthew 28:18-20)

walking with ChristJesus introduced the whole of mankind to a new foundation of trust through Him, a standard of purity in heart and mind that animal sacrifices could never bring. (Luke 10:27, 12:1; Mark 11:24-25; Acts 15:9; 20:28-31; John 15:7, 17:17; Ephesians 5:3, 11; 1 Corinthians 3:13-15, 5:5-7, 10:16-22, 15:33; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18) Disciples of the Messiah are born-again. They are to reject the iniquity of the past for a renewed life through the Holy Spirit, a “new man” through Messiah. They are circumcised in heart. (Deuteronomy 30:6; Jeremiah 4:1-4; Romans 2:25-29; Psalm 51:5; Exodus 34:7; Ezekiel 18:20; Matthew 7:21-23, 24:1-51; Luke 18:8; 1 John 1:9, 2:2, 27; 1 Peter 3:18; 1 Corinthians 2:13; Romans 10:10 – Colossians 3:1,10; Ephesians 4:24; 1 Corinthians 2:14; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 6:6)

First TempleOur Messiah came to abolish the former system of sacrifice, demonstrating that a national-political-religious presence that truly worshipped and loved YHWH could only result in failure. YHWH provided a superior redemption through Jesus the Messiah combined with the obedient loving heart of each man and woman. (James 2:14-26; Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 John 3:9; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:19; Romans 10:4) This truth is clear: a person that puts trust in anything other than YHWH and the sacrifice of YHWH is in danger of destruction. This point of truth makes many resentful. Like Jews of the past, these professed Christians prefer an ‘easier’ way, a different gospel. They expect to provide their own means of salvation. (Matthew 10:28, 25:44-46; Romans 1:26-2:1, 6:23; John 8:42-44; James 4:7; 1 Peter 1:23-25; Revelation 21:8; Galatians 1:6-9; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; 2 Corinthians 11:4, 13-15; “Seeking a New Spirit“)

bible-reader-internetThrough the Holy Spirit, prayer and study, genuine disciples are able to discern what truth is. (2 Peter 1:2-4; Colossians 2:8; Jude 1:3; John 14:15-17, 26; Acts 2:38; Galatians 5:22-23) Disciples of the Messiah must receive YHWH’s Word as the Bereans did, to prove all things. (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:21; Proverbs 11:1-31) When Elohim abides in a person, that person loves Him, seeking continually to most fully know His Way. Their life shows that, removing the false and casting out the counterfeit of Satan. (“YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“; “Breaking the Hold of Stress“; “Opposing Fear“; “Attitude & the Disciple of Messiah“)

“A false balance is abomination to Yahweh: but a just weight is his delight. When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom. The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death. The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness. When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth. The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.” – Proverbs 11:1-8, WoY

To seek for and to keep a pure heart is not easy, and impossible without the Holy Spirit. Purity of heart is not something that imperfect humans fully grasp because of our inherited imperfection. The iniquity of generations past through principalities and through ancestry can be a real challenge. The ‘curse of nations’ continue to bear fruit, causing real problems for those that fail to recognize the truth. (Deuteronomy 28:15-68; Exodus 20:3-6) Instead, the cursed eagerly follow after materialism, nationalism, humanism and other philosophies, attitudes and traditions of men.

angry parentMany of the attitudes and qualities of your parents and their parents are handed down, creating the need for spiritual change within yourself to break the cycle. Dealing with iniquity of the past as well as sin in personal life is a real challenge that every man and woman must face. When you carry this iniquity as yours, that iniquity is carried as personal sin, which can easily affect your standing with YHWH, impacting your conditional promise of eternal life. Not one is exempt, even when you take the ‘easy road.’ The life that you live is about decision, as well as understanding authority. Authority in life is what the Bible continually teaches. This point is usually missed, even among professed experts of Christianity. That is because most of mankind has confused YHWH’s authority with theirs. (“Disciples of Messiah & the Authority of Man“; more on authority)

Keeping humility in your heart is essential in order for you to win your spiritual battle. (John 10:10; Ephesians 6:12; 2 Corinthians 12:9-10; 1 Peter 5:8; Ephesians 6:11; Hebrews 12:4; Daniel 12:1-13; Revelation 20:8; “Strongholds & the Armor of YHWH“; “YHWH’s Prayer Shawl of Protection“; “Humility: Do You Need It?“)

Disciples of Messiah are set apart by their love for YHWH, love for brothers in Messiah, and love for others, clearly evidenced in life and what they do. (Matthew 5:8; John 14:6; James 1:14-15; 1 Peter 1:13-21, 2:11; 1 John 1:5-6, 2:15-17; 3:1-9, 4:8; 1 Timothy 6:3-5; 2 Timothy 2:5, 22, 3:1-5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5; 2 Thessalonians 3:15; Colossians 3:16; Revelation 3:11; “Real Love“; “YHWH Loves His People“)

This results in life changes. Life begins to mirror belief. (Galatians 5:22-25) When applied, YHWH’s Word is a great help in marriage, an integral part of purity in the heart of the couple as they stand continually for YHWH. (Matthew 5:27-28; Hebrews 13:4; 1 Corinthians 6:18; 1 Timothy 1:5; Titus 2:12; Galatians 5:19-20; 1 Peter 1:22; Romans 6:13; Psalm 12:6)

hammurabi codeHow often do Christians and others say that the contents of the Bible are a moral code or an ethical code? How often do you hear about a national call to ‘biblical values?’ Certainly, the temptation is to be legalistic, to attempt to hammer ‘sinners’ with the law, whatever that may be considered to be by whoever is making the point. This is exactly what man’s governance does. History shows that people cannot truly be manipulated into whatever is considered as moral behavior, either through politics, culture or religion. Human beings are motivated by their own beliefs and trust, not only through their own life experience, but often from the sin and traditions of the past. Because of this, however, deception is often easier than to make an outright challenge. Propaganda and seduction, as works of the devil, are more effective. Disciples of Messiah must keep away from seductive teachings, calling out deception as it is revealed to them. Belief and trust is where the spiritual connection with YHWH is made through the Holy Spirit. The history of mankind shows why YHWH’s Kingdom is needed more than ever. The Bible contains Elohim’s righteousness to those that believe. (John 1:12) YHWH’s righteousness is written on the hearts of those that love Him. (Proverbs 7:3; Ezekiel 36:26; Hebrews 4:12; 1 Timothy 1:5; Ephesians 6:6; “A Hidden Lifestyle Message from Messiah“; “Abiding in Trust“; “You Are A Spiritual Watchman“)

new man in Christ bookUnderstanding the role of genuine love and its role in your life is another essential. It doesn’t change authority, but promotes brotherly love among disciples of like mind as they continue the commission led by our Messiah. This is exactly the area that a growing global social order is keying into with the idea of promoting a global authority over all men, women and children. Understanding and fully realizing love, humility, or any of the fruits of the Spirit is not about church or a church tradition. Each man, woman or child is judged, based not only on personal judgment of others, but on personal heart condition, which is evidenced (even imperfectly) through behavior, what church leadership often calls doctrine. (Matthew 7:1-2; John 7:24; Romans 10:17, 14:1, 10-13; 1 Corinthians 2:15; “Real Love“; “YHWH First: Your Life is Your Testimony“)

Church culture often splits, creating its own laws, which it claims are different, or somehow sets them apart from others. The authority of the Bible is not at stake, for that is already written for the well-being of all. It is truly a book of good news for those that want it. (Matthew 5:20; 1 Peter 2:1-25; 1 John 3:7; Romans 5:1-5, 7:5, 8:4-6; 2 Timothy 2:22; Psalm 106:3; Proverbs 2:5-20) The ethics and morals of mankind are the inventions of men and nothing more. YHWH is the ultimate authority over all and personal righteousness is through trust, the evidence of that authority. This kind of statement is rare because so many fear the loss of their authority, whatever they can conjure up. The authority of man hates trust in YHWH because of the lust for power and control, which puts other authority in submission. The power lust of governance stands against submission to YHWH, yet this governance eagerly desires your respect and submission first above all things. They seek godhood, much like the demon Satan that spawned their mindset. (Matthew 13:1-58; Mark 4:3-9; John 15:1-27; 1 Peter 1:23; “Wisdom & the Battle of Two Kingdoms“; “Bible: Wisdom 101“)

God's Kingdom vs. Satan's OrderThe heart and mind of a real disciple of the Messiah seeks only YHWH, the sacrifice of Yahshua [Jesus] and His Kingdom. (Exodus 20:3-6; Deuteronomy 12:32-13:18; 1 John 5:21; Jonah 2:8; Psalm 16:4) A great falling away is underway and it is important that you know this. It would be better that you walk away from apostate leadership and commit your trust to YHWH and the sacrifice of Yahshua [Jesus], evidencing your love of Elohim with home Bible study and small meetings of like-minded disciples, full of YHWH’s Holy Spirit. (2 Corinthians 11:3; 1 Timothy 4:1, 16; 2 Peter 2:20-22; James 4:17; Hebrews 10:39; Romans 11:19-22; “A Doctrine of Demons“; “YHWH’s Threshing Floor“)

Right now, purity of heart is a process that is theoretical in nature to imperfect people. We are all imperfect now, so purity of heart is relative. Righteousness is not relative, clearly set out by YHWH for all that care to know and respond. That righteousness through the sacrifice of Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah is what makes genuine disciples blameless before YHWH. (John 1:14, 6:44; Acts 4:8-12; James 1:17; Philippians 2:12-16; 1 John 5:3; 2 Peter 3:9, 13; Colossian 1:16-17, 2:9-10; Romans 10:4; “Healing Wounds That People Can’t See“; “Moving Mountains in Your Life“; “Homosexuality: Sex and Personal Identity Crisis“; “Adultery: Sin & Righteousness“)

“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of Elohim, and of Yahshua our Master, according as the power of Elohim hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and reverence, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to honour and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the nature of Elohim, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience reverence; and to reverence brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Master Yahshua the Messiah. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall” – 2 Peter 1:2-10, WoY

“I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.” – Revelation 3:11, NKJV

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
