Petra and the Rock of Salvation

Petra by moonlight

by John Greene

treasury facade of PetraIn these last days of man’s governance, many are concerned about the ‘protection of God’ and how they will be protected during the onslaught of persecution from the antichrist system. Many more are concerned about the Jews and what protection they are promised. Some believe this promise is a physical place called Sela or Petra. (Isaiah 42:11; Jeremiah 49:13, 16; Ezekiel 38:2, 39:10-11) During ancient battles in this region, people were known to take refuge in caves. During the battle of Armageddon, many are concerned about where they will go for protection. It is said by some that the embattled Jews of Israel will stream to the ancient Petra for safety. Revelation 20:8 is often used to prove this without taking scripture in context. Further, anyone that would expect safety in the cliffs of Siq and the rock caves of Petra (per Revelation 20) would be treacherously close to the battle of Gog of Magog. Myth and misunderstanding has become the doctrine of many. While Petra may be the rock of the Jews and some Christians, Petra is not the Rock of genuine disciples of the Messiah, nor is Petra the Rock of salvation. (Matthew 24:15-22; Luke 21:20-23; Isaiah 50:2, 59:1; “Discernment: Having an Ear to Deeper Understanding“; “YHWH’s Protection in Difficult Times“; “Abiding With YHWH in Quiet Places“; “Truth of the Apocalypse“)

A religious shrine from PetraPetra was an ancient city of power and commercial importance that governed the silk route that came through that area. (2 Kings 14:7; Isaiah 16:1) The prophets of YHWH foretold its downfall, just like the coming downfall of another Babylon in this day. (Jeremiah 49:7-22; Isaiah 34:5-15; Ezekiel 35:1-15; Joel 3:19) Today, Petra is a ruin. Only exquisite building facades and other pagan rock carvings still exist, aside from fragments of pottery and a city buried by the sands of time. As human beings, we tend to be obsessed with the physical, for that is all that most people are able to relate to. So it often is with Bible prophecy and the admonition of scripture. Men and women most often look to the mountains of men, the arrangements of worldly authority to suit their needs, as it is written:

“And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?’” – Revelation 6:15-17, NKJV

Is this not what people are doing today? People hide in the governance of man for all of their physical and spiritual provision. How much more so in the unprecedented time to come? Have Christians forgotten that Father YHWH is their Rock? Who is the Rock and Resting Place of Elohim’s people, if not YHWH? Who are His people? (Isaiah 2:10-21; 1 Samuel 2:2; 2 Samuel 22:2-3; Psalm 31:2-3, 78:15-16, 35; Matthew 7:15-17; 1 Corinthians 10:1-4; Hebrews 4:1-3, 6; “The Unapologetic Christian“)

YHWH is the Rock of Salvation

“He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: an Elohim of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. ” – Deuteronomy 32:4, WoY

“Yahweh is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my El, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” – Psalm 18:2, WoY

“But Yahweh is my defence; and my Elohim is the rock of my refuge.” – Psalm 94:22, WoY

“He who believes in the Son possesses everlasting life, but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of Elohim remains on him.” – John 3:36, ISR98

The Rock and Resting Place of Disciples

“YHWH is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. ” – Psalm 23:1-3, RNKJV (see also Psalm 23:4-6)

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, who abides under the shadow of the Almighty, he is saying of YHWH, “My refuge and my stronghold, my Elohim, in whom I trust!” – Psalm 91:1-2, ISR98

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” – Matthew 11:28-29, NKJV

“Then spoke Yahshua again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” – John 8:12, WoY

“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Yahshua the Messiah.” – 1 Corinthians 3:11, WoY

“Let us therefore do our utmost to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience. For the Word of Elohim is living, and working, and sharper than any two-edged sword, cutting through even to the dividing of being and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:11-12, ISR98

Who are YHWH’s people?

“But seek first the reign of Elohim, and His righteousness, and all these matters shall be added to you. Do not, then, worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow shall have its own worries. Each day has enough evil of itself.” – Matthew 6:33-34, ISR98

“But why do you call Me ‘Master, Master,’ and do not do what I say? Everyone who is coming to Me, and is hearing My words and is doing them, I shall show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock. And when a flood came, the stream burst against that house, but was unable to shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But the one hearing and not doing, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream burst, and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.” – Luke 6:46-49, ISR98

“If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” – John 14:15-17, NKJV

“And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, saying, ‘Did not we strictly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.’ Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, ‘We ought to obey Yahweh rather than men.‘ – Acts 5:27-29, WoY

“Therefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, being sober, set your expectation perfectly upon the favor that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Yahshua Messiah, as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts in your ignorance, instead, as the One who called you is set-apart, so you also should become set-apart in all behavior, because it has been written, ‘Be set-apart, for I am set-apart.‘” – 1 Peter 1:13-16, ISR98

“And this is his commandment, that we should believe on the name of his Son Yahshua the Messiah, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.” – 1 John 3:23-24, WoY

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” – Ephesians 5:11, NKJV

Salvation through Yahshua [Jesus] alone

“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” – John 10:9, NKJV

“Yahshua said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” – John 11:25-26, WoY

“Yahshua saith unto him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.'” – John 14:6, WoY

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” – Acts 4:12, NKJV

“And this is the record, that Elohim hath given to us everlasting life, and this life is in his Son.” – 1 John 5:11, WoY

lights on petraSome Christians seem to worry incessantly over the Jews of secular Israel. So we should, as well as others that are lost. It is natural to be concerned about those that we care for. However, speaking scriptural truth, even though it may be unpopular shows real love and concern. Genuine disciples of the Messiah are the watchmen or ‘fishers of men’ in this age. A watchman warns others in times of trouble. A watchman for Messiah also defends the gospel. A watchman for Messiah is full of the Holy Spirit. To refuse the commission of Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah could place the blood of other people on your head. The righteous thing to do is to give them another opportunity to receive that truth of the Messiah. (Matthew 28:19-20; “Wisdom & the Battle of Two Kingdoms“; “Living in the Now“; “The Modern Life Culture Crisis“; “Abiding in Trust“)

“But set apart YHWH Elohim in your hearts, and always be ready to give an answer to everyone asking you a reason concerning the expectation that is in you, with meekness and fear” – 1 Peter 3:15, ISR98 (see also Philippians 1:15-17)

When you love YHWH and appreciate the loving sacrifice of Yahshua [Jesus], expressing your love as a watchman, or as a fisher of men, are part of your nature. Otherwise, everyone continues to remain subject to the spell of the world, destined for death. Yahshua [Jesus] is a requirement, not an option. He is your High Priest. (Hebrews 4:15, 6:20) When YHWH is your Rock and the Holy Spirit abides in your heart, concern for others is part of the expression of His love. YHWH will take care of you through His provision, even as He already has, in preparation for His Kingdom. (2 Corinthians 9:8; Deuteronomy 28:1-68; 1 Corinthians 6:9; 2 Timothy 3:1-5; John 14:26; Hebrews 4:14; “Disciple: The Bible & Higher Authority“; “The Role of Authority in Your Life“; “Christian: Your Basis of Trust“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
