Understanding Sin

by John Greene

making the markUnderstanding sin is important. If you were asked to define sin you might have your own definition based on what you don’t like. But that is much like defining ‘common good,’ what seems to be good or convenient at the moment. One of the most common definitions for sin is ‘missing the mark’ – the failure to live up to an expected standard. Consider this though – missing the mark where the Heavenly Father is concerned fails to consider that when the mark is missed, another mark is hit. What could that be?

“Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.” – 1 John 3:4, NKJV

According to this verse, sin is anything that is contrary to what the Word of YHWH commands or forbids. Sin is lawlessness.

“All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not unto death. We know that everyone having been born of Elohim does not sin, but the one having been born of Elohim guards himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. We know that we are of Elohim, and all the world lies in the wicked one. And we know that the Son of Elohim has come and has given us an understanding, so that we might know the true One. And we are in the true One, in His Son Yahshua Messiah. This is the true Elohim and everlasting life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” – 1 John 5:17-21, ISR98

manifestation of unrighteousnessThe Father’s standards indicate that all unrighteousness is lawlessness. Sin is a measure of that lawlessness against YHWH’s righteousness. However, Christians should remember that not all sin leads to death. Consider also, that the Jews added many of their own laws and traditions to the Mosaic Law covenant – just as many organizations that profess Christianity have done. The tendency is to corrupt righteousness with the knowledge of the world and the legalism of man, the agency of sin and Satan. Yahshua [Jesus] came to save those that are willing to listen, obey, and respond in love to His commands; to replace that imperfect provision of the old nation of Israel. Yet according to Hebrew scripture that would be sin. Animal sacrifice is part of the law [Torah], yet this was done away with through the eternal sacrifice of Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah. This proved to all that would listen that Yahshua [Jesus] is the Way, the only Way through His supreme sacrifice. In the same way, Christians must always seek truth and reject what is false, grounded in the provision of Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah. He is patient so that more might be saved and the Name of the Father magnified. (John 3:16, 14:6; Matthew 13:1-58; Jude 1:3; Hebrews 4:15, 8:9; 2 Peter 3:9; Psalm 23:1-6; “Freedom in Messiah Despite the World“; “Freedom: The Law of Sin and Death“)

foundation of trustSin, regardless of how that sin is expressed, always has an effect. It separates from YHWH, the power of the Holy Spirit [Set Apart, Dedicated Ruach], as well as most earthly relationships. The original sin in the garden of Eden was destructive. Satan disguised his craft against YHWH as ‘knowledge,’ just as man has done through the ages. Since that moment, all of mankind, descended from the original couple has had the curse of death hanging over their heads; all because of separation from YHWH. (Genesis 3:3; Romans 5:12, 6:23) Death is proved by sin. Yahshua [Jesus] is the remedy for the eternal judgment of sin that leads to death. The remedy starts with belief, trusting fully in the provision of YHWH through the Messiah while becoming renewed in character through the Holy Spirit. While all are subject to die physically in this age, the provision of the Messiah brings new life in YHWH’s Kingdom, beginning with the life that you live today. (Romans 5:21) Sin has an effect on a believer, but the price of Yahshua [Jesus] completes disciples of Messiah in the eyes of YHWH, allowing them to be part of His Kingdom. (1 John 2:1; “The Unpardonable Sin“; “Do You Take Sin For Granted?“; “Strongholds & the Armor of YHWH“)

Rebellious sinners that act apart from the Father must confess sin and forsake it. In the same way that King David was justified by his trust in YHWH, everyone that trusts YHWH and His Son is justified as righteous. When you agree with YHWH (homologeo), you are justified by acknowledging sin and turning aside from it. (John 8:40-44; Ephesians 2:3)

When we agree with righteousness [homologeo] as to our sins, He is trustworthy and right to forgive the sin, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.“ – 1 John 1:9, direct translation

considering-Gods-WordAcknowledging sin is the first step to turning aside from it. In this way, believers have the assurance YHWH can be counted on to keep His Word, through His justice and righteousness based on His standards. He has paid the price through His Son, which forgives the temporary insanity of unrighteousness and cleanses, all through active trust. The provision of Yahshua [Jesus] is fully able to cleanse you completely from anything that doesn’t agree with YHWH’s character. Trust is the bedrock of right relationship with YHWH, with the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 3:23, 12:1-2; 1 Timothy 2:5, 6:20-21; 2 Timothy 2:12-13; “Wisdom & the Battle of Two Kingdoms“; “The Wisdom of Proverbs“)

“Do not love the world nor that which is in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Because all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust of it, but the one doing the desire of Elohim remains forever.” – 1 John 2:15-17, ISR98

government-kosmosThe Greek word ‘kosmos’ does not refer to the universe as modern man often expresses. The kosmos of mankind is his own orderly arrangement, the decoration of a sinful community that is eternally doomed through man’s governance. This sinful humanity is a rebellion against YHWH: “all the world (kosmos) lies in the wicked one.” (1 John 5:19) Because of rebellious opposition to YHWH, the world values things apart from Him. This governance can tempt the believer that trusts in YHWH and His provision, to reject that provision and salvation by accepting the corruption of man’s world. As you are made new through the provision of the Holy Spirit, you can begin to discern the corruption of mankind and put aside the corruption that you have previously accepted. (James 5:1-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Hebrews 6:1-20; “Cultivating YHWH’s Grace as You Seek Truth“; “A Doctrine of Demons“)

The kosmos of man is rebellion to YHWH, headed by a spiritual adversary, the prince of the world that scripture calls Satan. (John 12:31, 14:30, 16:11; Matthew 4:1-11) Satan and the kosmos of man make themselves idols in rebellion against YHWH. Together, they are the authority of the Beast. (James 4:4; 2 Peter 1:4; 1 John 4:1; 2 John 1:7; 2 Corinthians 11:3; Revelation 13:1-18, 14:9-10, 17:8, 20:1-15)

“He who believes in the Son possesses everlasting life, but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of Elohim [YHWH] remains on him.” – John 3:36, ISR98

agreement with YHWHThe solution for loving the world is to love YHWH greater. The disciple of the Messiah that seeks to obey Him pleases Him through agreement with His Word set out in scripture. Through the power of the Holy Spirit and personal agreement, you achieve spiritual growth through prayer, personal study and witnessing to others. You don’t allow yourself to succumb to the temptation of the flesh. In scripture, ‘in the flesh’ is used to express the baseness of human nature when measured with Father YHWH’s righteousness. (Romans 8:7-10; Galatians 5:16, 19-20; Colossian 1:13) Through the Holy Spirit, disciples can possess ‘another nature.’ Two kingdoms fight for your soul, even inside of you because of the iniquity of sin. Yet, you and YHWH’s Spirit have the power to overcome, to allow the Holy Spirit to dominate and for you to produce spiritual fruit. This requires a moment-to-moment dependence, an always present trust in YHWH and His power that operates through you. Whether you choose this is your decision. All will be judged by this choice, so the ongoing choices you make have everything to do with YHWH’s Kingdom and your role in it. (2 Peter 3:7; Matthew 22:29; John 14:15, 26; 1 John 4:1; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Hebrews 10:26; Romans 15:4; Proverbs 25:26; “Understanding Real Prosperity“; “YHWH’s Promise to His Elect“; “The Real Power Behind Baptism“; “Blind Leading the Blind“)

“All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” – John 10:8-10

God's Kingdom vs. Satan's OrderDon’t allow YHWH’s Kingdom to come upon you like a thief in the night or for the world to dominate your spiritual expression. Instead, decide to learn to live your life in the presence of YHWH’s Spirit. We pray that you will make the right choice and remain in that choice. (Luke 10:27; 2 Corinthians 4:3-4; “Credentials of a Disciple of Messiah“; “Christianity: A Crisis in Prayer & Spirit“; “The Role of Authority in Your Life“; “Overcoming Satanic Attack“; “The Beast System: the Image & Mark“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
