Adam, Eve & the Shining One

by John and Ruth Greene

Whether you believe that the first couple is real or simply an allegory, there is much to be learned from scripture. Rest assured, all of us have something to learn. Learning about your ancestors often helps you to understand yourself and your life. Adam and Eve were the highlight of YHWH’s creation, the very reason that Father Elohim made the earth. They didn’t always live the way He intended. Through their mistakes, you can learn important lessons on how to live in righteousness. Adam and Eve teach about the nature of sin and its consequences. Just as Adam and Eve made their misery, so each of us continue to make our own misery or joy! (“YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“)

forbidden fruit“Don’t touch that tree! (Genesis 3:2-3) When I was a little girl I lived with my grandmother. She had a peach tree in the front yard amidst many other fruit trees. I was told that being around the tree was dangerous because of the wasps that swarmed around it. We used to sit out on the front porch. As the peaches ripened, the fragrance was magnificent. The peaches were huge and looked very tasty, even from a distance. When the peaches dropped to the ground, my grandmother would pick them up. She did this every day during the season. One day I picked one of the peaches right off of the tree and began to eat it. The taste was every bit as good as how the peach looked and smelled. My grandmother caught me and told about the dangers of the wasps. A wasp would sting me and leave its stinger behind. Then, I would have to go to see the doctor. Then, there was the possibility of allergies to the sting. The pain of a sting could be terrible. I had touched the tree despite any danger and ate the forbidden fruit. (Genesis 2:17) I had failed to listen to instruction and had sinned against my best friend, just as the first couple sinned against their best friend! When my grandmother told me that something was harmful, she was serious.” – Ruth Greene

Happily, Ruth wasn’t judged eternally for that single decision as a child. However, just as it was with Adam and Eve, the decisions you make in your life either set you up for life or eternal destruction. (Deuteronomy 30:19; John 10:10; 1 Peter 2:9; 1 John 3:1; Romans 6:23) Ezekiel 18:26 still applies: “When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity, and dies in it, it is because of the iniquity which he has done that he dies.”

Love Is DivineIn His loving-kindness, YHWH made a partner, a wife for Adam. Adam did fine until he had a wife. Scripture doesn’t say why Eve was alone by herself in the garden. Jewish tradition and mysticism have tales about this, but what scripture says is all that we can depend on for truth. What we do know is that Adam stood by his woman, costing their children and future generations a great deal. We can be reasonably certain that the fruit probably wasn’t tasteless and odorless. This is not the kind of fruit that you find in most grocery stores. We mean the kind of fruit that is sun-ripened and ready to eat. When the fruit was ripe, it was not only a pleasure to look at, but the fragrance surely added to the temptation. From this example, you can appreciate that temptations are rarely singular in nature. When something becomes desirable, other seductive qualities of the temptation add to the pressure of giving in to it. (Genesis 2:9; “Temptations & Tough Choices“; “Breaking the Hold of Addictions through Temptation“; “Understanding Sin“)

Then, there was Satan, more cunning than any living creature. (Genesis 3:1) Most Bible translators translate the Hebrew nachash as ‘serpent,’ although in the Genesis account, nachash is more appropriately revealed as ‘shining’ or ‘the shining one.’ This shining creature was clearly not an animal of a lower order that Adam had named, but a messenger or  ‘angel of light.’ Many will tell you about the fall of Satan, the shining one mentioned by many Bible translations in Isaiah 14:12. (Isaiah 14:12-27) Many a translator has referred to or politely upheld Satan as the shining one in Isaiah 14:12, which is a mistranslation set out by the Codex Vaticanus. Instead, in translation the verse would read something like this:

“How you have fallen from out of the heavens! Howl, son of the dawn! You are cut off to the land, prostrated by nations.” – Isaiah 14:12, direct translation

The king of Babylon was cut off in that day as Babylon the Great will be cut off in this day. However, Isaiah does not support Satan as an angel of light or a shining one, to what should be the chagrin of many a polite Bible translator that acted as ‘angels of light’ by refusing to take a stand. We must rely on Genesis and later, the Apostle Paul to lay out the truth on this shining liar that has fallen from great heights.

In the garden, a messenger of light slyly reasoned with Eve, selling her the pleasant qualities of the fruit and what it would do for her. He made sin look inviting. However, just as imperfect men have a hard time grasping perfection in any real way, so the first couple didn’t have a real understanding on sin or corruption. They were accustomed to an unmolested world and a Spiritual Father that provided for their every need. YHWH established the measure of sin, a concept that Adam and Eve were unfamiliar with. Though being pure of heart and complete before the Father, they were young and inexperienced with deception. When reading in Genesis, one statement the ‘shining one’ made rings a measure of truth:

“Because Elohim knows the day you eat from it your eyes will open and you will become gods discerning good and evil.” – Genesis 3:5, direct translation

discern both good and evilMost seductive was the sales point that Eve would become wise like YHWH, knowing evil from righteousness. People would discern good from evil, most likely on their own terms apart from their Heavenly Father. They were separated from Him. That is what YHWH came to heal. He reinstituted relations with mankind through Abram, followed by anchoring this foundaton in place through the Messiah. Many have walked away, even YHWH’s own professed nation of people, refusing to discern the destructive nature of sin. Discerning is what all disciples of the Messiah must learn to do today, not by the morality or ethics of the world, but by YHWH’s track of righteousness. This is a firm standard that He has determined for those that love Him. (“Discernment: Having an Ear to Deeper Understanding“; “Discernment the World Doesn’t Have“; “Christian Disciple: Wavering Between Two Opinions“)

scripture searchScripture says that Satan was complete in wisdom and beauty. (Ezekiel 28:15) He came as a ‘shining one’ to the first couple, but he had become corrupted through envying YHWH’s power, and as a result was full of iniquity. Through Eve’s willingness to talk with Satan, the human race was undone. Simply talking with Satan was enough to begin the corruption as both Eve and Satan began to stretch the truth of what YHWH said. This resulted in outright rebellion by all, condemning them and their children to a terrible punishment. Satan and his kind were cursed above all living creatures. He was condemned to the vicinity of the earth to live ‘on his belly’ and ‘to eat dust.’ Scripture isn’t revealing that all snakes would be condemned to eat dust, as if a snake could live on that. Satan was removed from his role in the heavens forever, from the presence of YHWH, debased to consume the dust of mankind all the days of his life. This can be concluded by examining Genesis 2:7, which details the creation of man from the dust (aphar) of the earth. The punishment and abasement of fallen spirit creatures (demons) and all living creatures on earth has been great, ultimately making the earth a wilderness and the garden east of Eden a desert. Because of sin, all of mankind was cast into a spiritual wilderness apart from the Kingdom of YHWH. (“Wisdom & the Battle of Two Kingdoms“; “Bible: Wisdom 101“; “The Beast: The Shining One“)

body-window-dustYour body, the dust that makes every man, woman and child, is made of ordinary materials. However, despite the chasm brought about by sin, YHWH nurtures us and His creation. What is special is the life force, the spirit of life that YHWH breathes into an otherwise lifeless shell. YHWH is the miracle, not the raw materials. (This spirit of life is not to be confused with the Holy Spirit, the Counselor of genuine Christians who allow Him to work in their lives.) When the Father’s life-giving breath returns to Him, the body returns to the dust as an empty shell. (Genesis 2:7) In the same way, when a person purposefully sins and is unrepentant, that one is condemned to a spiritual death, what can become separation from Father Elohim resulting in death. (“The Importance of Practical Repentance“; “Disciples of Messiah & Spiritual Fruit“)

Many Adams and many Eves fill the world of man. They deny that life and value comes from YHWH’s Spirit. Instead, they boast of their achievements and abilities as if they were the originator of their own strengths. Sin can also work the opposite way through condemnation and lack of belief. Others feel worthless because they don’t feel that they stand out or are spiritually damaged in some way. YHWH chooses to give each one of us the miracles that power our lives. He also gives us the power to use those miracles. Your worth has nothing to do with your achievements in the minds of men, but as your life and abilities come from YHWH that are given back to Him. You are also worthy of rest. We live in an action oriented world! There always seems to be plenty to do and no time to rest. That is man’s way. Rest is appropriate and right, another provision of YHWH. YHWH rests and His people rest, a holy provision directly from Him. (Mark 6:31-32) Rest refreshes all disciples of Messiah for real service to Him. YHWH blessed the seventh day and set it aside for His people as a day of rest and spiritual refreshment. (Exodus 20:1-17; “Strongholds & the Armor of YHWH“; “The Idolatry Factor“; “Understanding Real Prosperity“; “What is the Sabbath?“)

earthly ambitionSelf-exaltation is rebellion against YHWH. As soon as anyone leaves the Most High out of personal plans that person is placing self above Him. Through the historical decision of Adam and Eve, the act of eating from the forbidden fruit tree made them their own gods. They exercised their own will above the Will of YHWH. (Genesis 3:5-6) They became spiritually attached to Satan and his demons, all who had become their own gods as well. Living in this world, you cannot always prevent temptation, but there is always a way of escape. (1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Timothy 2:22) Prepare yourself for those attractive temptations that can come your way. You know what you are tempted by in most cases, which really can help matters. Remember always that Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah is the answer. His provision made relationship with YHWH possible and brought disciples of the Messiah the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The provision of Messiah has made it possible for His disciples to be free from the law of sin and death. This isn’t cheap grace that corrupted religion pretends, but the Father’s love bears spiritual fruit for those that follow after the Spirit. Grace is the time that Father has given to each man and woman to follow after His Son. Through loving respect in obedience and prayer, anyone can begin to change his or her personal life one day at a time, growing toward spiritual maturity as YHWH’s track of righteousness is instilled within mind and heart. (Matthew 5:17; 1 Corinthians 15:22; Romans 6:14, 23, 8:2; Galatians 5:18; 1 Peter 2:20-24; “The Mission of the Messiah’s Disciple“; “The Call of YHWH’s Watchman“; “Spiritual Fruit & Renewing Your Mind“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
