The Plight of the Strong Man

by John and Ruth Greene

“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.” – Luke 11:21-22, NKJV

Truly, “a house that is divided against itself will fall.” (Luke 11:17) That is the contextual theme that Yahshua [Jesus] was making as He spoke to those that were actively listening. In many commentaries, this ‘strong man’ is assumed to be Satan. (Matthew 12:29) However, in context of Luke 11, a ‘strong man’ can be a Christian disciple that devotes his life to the purpose of Christ. (Psalm 84:11-12; Psalm 27:4; Isaiah 58:13-14)

house divided

“For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand days. I have chosen rather to be a doorkeeper in the House of my Elohim, than to dwell in the tents of the wrong. ” – Psalm 84:10, ISR98

courtyardA ‘strong man’ that is overcome loses his armor. This can also mean that the ‘strong man’ loses the armor he has or that armor that he fashioned becomes ineffective. He can no longer protect the courtyard of his home or his own land, the closely held elements of his life. The armor is what made the ‘strong man’ feel strong, what he trusted in or grew to trust in. In this respect, where you place your trust is vital. (“Strongholds & the Armor of YHWH“; “Verbalizing Divine Protection“; “The Secret Weapons of Christians“)

gods-armorAs the ‘armor of trust’ is in the world of man, so it is in real spiritual battle. The spiritual force that overcomes the ‘strong man’ takes his armor (what actually protects him) and plunders what is left after his protection is compromised or removed, converting the ‘strong man’ for its own use and purposes. The ‘strong man’ may even continue to believe that he or she is strong. (Ephesians 6:11-13; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5; Psalm 91:1-16) For example, those disciples of Christ that don’t truly believe what they claim to believe will be compromised, risking the same destruction as Satan and his agents. This is because a Christian that willfully compromises YHWH’s Kingdom in his heart and mind quickly becomes an agent of Satan’s kingdom. Unhappily, the same destination for destruction can be reality either because of deception or simply because of the refusal to discern, believe and begin to understand what is true. (Luke 18:18-30; Romans 12:1-2; Matthew 6:24; Proverbs 25:26; “Wisdom & the Battle of Two Kingdoms“; “Christian: Wavering Between Two Opinions“)

“And He [Yahshua] said, ‘Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.’” – Luke 22:31-32

winnow the grainIn Luke 22:31, Yahshua [Jesus] said that Satan literally ‘obtained you by asking’ [Greek: exaiteomai + humas] with ‘you’ being plural. Yahshua was addressing everyone in His midst, not simply Peter. Satan had acquired permission to put them all under trial, just as he has every human being. Counter to Peter’s profession based in pride (Luke 22:33) and after the admonition of Yahshua [Jesus] to all the disciples in His presence, Peter almost immediately fell away by denying Him. Satan and his agents seek to make every disciple of Messiah become like chaff instead of wheat on YHWH’s threshing floor. (Matthew 3:12; Luke 3:17; Daniel 2:35) Satan seeks to bust up the grain of truth by substituting his own. (“The Wheels of Ezekiel“; “YHWH’s Threshing Floor“)

begin to discernThis intent of evil is reality whether Satan’s agents know of their role in deception or not. By any means possible, Satan seeks to change the wheat of YHWH’s love to the chaff of sin and iniquity through deception. (Amos 9:9; Revelation 2:10) Satan and his agents desire to scatter YHWH’s people and to separate them from one another by filling them with fear and doubt. Certainly, not a single Christian can find strength in pride and self-sufficiency, but only through trust in YHWH, the salvation of Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah and the Counselor of Christians, the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 25:41; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10; Revelation 14:12, 20:10; “Discernment: Having an Ear to Deeper Understanding“; “The Unapologetic Christian“; “Choosing to Serve YHWH, Not Man“)

“In the same way, you younger ones, be subject to elders. And gird yourselves with humility toward one another, for ‘Elohim resists the proud, but gives favour to the humble.’ Humble yourselves, then, under the mighty hand of Elohim, so that He exalts you in due time, casting all your worry upon Him, for He is concerned about you. Be sober, watch, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” – 1 Peter 5:5-8, ISR98

do not disturbEarlier in Luke 11, Yahshua [Jesus] taught his disciples how they should pray. In the parable of the friend at midnight (Luke 11:5-8), a friend locked away in his house for the evening refused to honor the request for food from another friend. Friendship did not move his heart. However, bold persistence did move him to give his friend as much as he needed. Yahshua also said:

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” – Luke 11:9-10, NKJV

shareThrough boldness you ask for what need as you seek it. Because of that boldness and your standing with YHWH in line with His Word, you will find what you seek. You demonstrate your expectations strongly. You don’t give in. Most of us can see what boldness means when you apply physical needs, but what about your spiritual needs? As boldness is often needed in day to day living, so it is in Christian life, even with prayer. In spiritual matters, how many Christians really know what to seek? (John 16:5-15) You won’t receive what you need unless you are interested enough to seek it and to dwell in it. You believe it without regard to circumstances about you. You aren’t double-minded. (James 1:6-8; 4:4, 7; Psalm 119:113-115; Isaiah 29:13; Matthew 6:24, 23:25-28, 26:47-50; Revelation 3:15-18; 1 Corinthians 10:21) You place your trust in where it belongs. (“Filling Your Life With Truth Instead of Deception“; “Deceptions of Generations: How People Are Deceived“)

“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.” – John 15:26

baptism of trust - Holy SpiritMessiah had to achieve His purpose by coming to earth in order for the Holy Spirit to come in power. The Holy Spirit came to speak on His own authority and to tell of things to come, magnifying the redeeming power of the Messiah. (John 16:7-15) Those that oppose the work of the Messiah scatter and destroy, seeking to enter the spirit of any man, woman or child – just as a demon operates. (Luke 11:24-28) It is up to each Christian to keep out the demonic influences of the world [kosmos], the decoration of authority created by mankind. In the meantime, genuine Christians are to pray and live as the Messiah did, that the sacrifice and example of Yahshua [Jesus] is glorified by those that really belong to Him. The world hates the body of the Messiah because they are not part of the world, as Yahshua [Jesus] was no part of the world. Disciples of the Messiah are to pray for brothers and sisters of like trust, those that honestly believe in the sacrifice of the Messiah through the scriptures, and that they are kept from evil. (John 17:9-26) This, in spite of the fact that Yahshua [Jesus] said that many will seek to ‘lay their hands on you and persecute you,’ even those close to you. (Luke 21:12; “Holy Spirit 101“; “Living in an Apostate World“; “Delusion & the Tightening Noose of the Beast System“; “Millenniums of Human Exploitation“; “Disciple: The Bible & Higher Authority“)

Today, disciples of the Most High clearly see the signs of the last days in an earth that is full of the creations and imaginings of mankind, the earthly decorations of the world. (Luke 21:25-31)

prayerThe plight of a ‘strong man’ depends wholly on each one, where trust is placed and whether that foundation is grounded in the truth of YHWH. (Colossians 3:1, 10; Ephesians 4:24, 2 Corinthians 5:17) In the end, Satan and his agents expect to sift each trusting disciple of the Messiah with the idea of breaking down YHWH’s truth. He expects to win and he will win multitudes. A comparative remnant will steadfastly resist Satan and win the war with our Heavenly Father, YHWH. Father promises that even without the visible assistance of worldly wealth, His disciples will spread the true Word of His Kingdom. This is so that those that are willing to listen can bring their lives into line with YHWH’s Word as they walk on His established track of righteousness. (Matthew 6:25-33; Luke 21:35; Hebrews 8:1, 9:27; Psalm 23:1-6; “Foundation of Salvation“; “YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“; “Temptations & Tough Choices“; “Battling Satan With the Word“; “What is Washing by the Word?“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your glory. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
