Grief: Living Your Thanks in Poverty or Plenty

by John Greene

depressionExpectations often run high, especially as the end of year holidays approach. Unresolved grief can suddenly reappear. Losses that have been suffered are often felt as loneliness and separation. You may feel drained and exhausted, or you may feel supercharged, finding it hard to slow down. You might have memories of happier times flooding in on you, along with the sensation that you are alone in your feelings and in the world. Even times of abundance may feel like being in the wilderness because of your personal loss. You may find yourself frozen in a rut of numbness and feel powerless to get out. (John 10:10; Isaiah 41:10; Proverbs 3:3, 5-6; Psalm 9:9, 30:11; “The Way: Getting Stuck in a Rut – And Out Again“; “Looking Fresh to YHWH Each Day“; “What Is Washing By The Word?“)

For anyone that is mourning the loss of a loved one or any other deep personal loss, any thanks may feel out of the question. Giving thanks to anyone, even to your Heavenly Father, might seem to be beyond you. Feeling and expressing gratitude during lack or poverty can feel very different from thankfulness in times of abundance. (2 Corinthians 1:3-12; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

gnashingHow is it different? For one, focusing on lack and poverty helps to keep you grounded there. You may be powerless to do anything about your situation, but how you choose to react is your power – even in the midst of real struggle. When you are dealing with the depths of real grief, like after your spouse dies, all you can see is the loss. So it can be with other things too. (Matthew 11:28-30; 1 Peter 1:13-16, 5:6-7; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 ; Revelation 21:3-4; Psalm 34:18, 147:3; “Winners Instead of Whiners“; “The Secret of Dedicated Disciples“; “Knowing Where You Stand on YHWH’s Threshing Floor“)

fear-gnashing-teethFor a few weeks or a month, personal loss can be intense, especially the kind of loss that hinges on personal relationship. Some of us hang on to this loss. But, ultimately you decide how long you stay there. When you evaluate your situation and the situation of your deceased loved one, you can begin to see the miracles, no matter how small. This is up to you and the Spirit to find, but if you are in regular prayer and abiding in the abundance of your Elohim [‘God’, YHWH], you will find those miracles – perhaps even the reasons why things needed to be the way they were. You don’t have to like it, merely understand it. This won’t be without some challenges. In Yahshua [Jesus] Messiah, you will overcome them. You are in a position to be comforted. (John 16:33; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; Psalm 23:1-4; “The Truth About Prayer“; “The Secret Weapons of Disciples“; “Defining Love“; “Breakthrough Prayer: Loneliness“; “Breakthrough Prayer: Grief“)

“Supremely favored are the distressed in spirit because theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Supremely favored are they that grieve because they are consoled.” – Matthew 5:3-4, direct translation

Set Apart RuachRemember that a lot of good is coming out of the other side of the Kingdom. In other words, when you are married to a believer, you have the assurance of a better mindset and understanding coming from the other side – as well as a position of abundance and real favor. If you parted on what you feel might to be less than perfect terms, the other side of the Kingdom forgets about such pettiness and shortcomings. This very thing is exactly what you want to do this side of the Kingdom. You will do a lot better now and as you walk into the Kingdom. You may feel guilt or some shame. What you need is to forgive yourself, with the help and strength of the Holy Spirit [Dedicated, Set Apart Spirit’]. In this way, or perhaps others, personal loss can help you to appreciate times of abundance, instead of staying focused on misery. Yes, you are ‘entitled’ to stay miserable, but with Kingdom promises that disciples of the Messiah have, why would you want to live there for long? Misery won’t help or redeem the past. You have every advantage to look forward, to live in the present, even as you remember the heartfelt pleasures and tragedies of the past. This isn’t simply for the sake of “moving on” as the world says, but honoring the righteousness of the past through the present into the future. It’s not about forgetting, it’s about loving more deeply. (John 14:16, 27, 15:7; James 5:13; Hebrews 13:1-25; Isaiah 40:31; Psalm 139:12; “YHWH Loves His People“; “Is Your Forgiveness Real?“; “Strength to Overcome Any Challenge“; “YHWH is Your Strength“)

“’For I declare my intentions that I purpose toward you,’ says YHWH, ‘intentions of well-being, not of evil, to bring forth what I long for in the end.’” – Jeremiah 29:11, direct translation

motivateIt’s about living in fullness, the fullness of your Father, completed through your Messiah. You can live trodden down by circumstances, or choose to draw your strength from the One that promises His very real and present help. This is not pop psychology or philosophy of the world. It’s learning to live in the abundance of your Father, wherever you might be at the time – which has nothing to do with your worldly bank account or material things. His abundance becomes yours, as you learn what shalom is, as you guard your heart for His promises. (John 14:1; Philippians 3:13-14, 4:6-8; 2 Timothy 4:7-8; Isaiah 26:3; Psalm 18:2, 34:10, 55:22; Proverbs 4:23; Joshua 1:9; “Abiding With YHWH in Quiet Places“; “Agape: Discipleship is Renewal“; “Disciples & the Occult of the World“)

“Therefore now, there is no condemnation for those in Messiah Yahshua, who do not walk after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Messiah Yahshua delivers me from the law of sin and death, for the reason that the law was unable in that it was weak through the flesh. Elohim dispatched His Son in the form of sinful flesh, and making a way around sin, judged against sin in the flesh in order that the righteousness of the law be completed in us walking, not after the flesh, but to the contrary, after the Spirit.” – Romans 8:1-4, direct translation

“For YAHWEH so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, HRB
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your righteousness. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. May it be as you have promised!
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
