Praying in the Wilderness

by John and Ruth* Greene

“And having risen very early in the morning, while still dark, He went out, and went away to a lonely place, and there He prayed. ” – Mark 1:35, ISR98

jesus-prayerThe importance of personal prayer time cannot be overemphasized. On rising, Yahshua [Jesus] liked to retreat to a place where He could be alone with His Father, to be strengthened and recharged. He went to get away from the world and to focus on His Father and the Holy Spirit [Dedicated, Set Apart Spirit] in prayer. This is a model for every disciple, whether you spend time praying in the early morning or not. Ruth has done this sort of thing for decades, spending hours alone praying and reading in the early hours of the morning. I remember her telling me that when she was still raising her youngest son and working so hard to support him, that she had to go outside in the cold garage to sit in order stay awake to pray. There are times when prayer takes that kind of commitment, whether you feel you are in a wilderness situation or not – which takes me to another important point – the wilderness. (“Brainwashed“; “Disciples & the Occult of the World“; “Learning from Snakes in the Wilderness“)

bible-7The way the scripture is translated above can be deceptive if you simply read it out loud and take it at face value. There is a deeper meaning within that verse that we believe you need to know about. When He rose up on the fourth watch (as some translations say), which is between 3am and 6am, He went into the wilderness to pray. It was His prayer closet, a place of peace. The original word used in Greek is ‘eremos,’ which is a wilderness, desert or uninhabited place. Everywhere else this word ‘eremos’ is translated in scripture, the word wilderness is used (in most translations). Certainly, He was alone – and He retreated into the wilderness or desert to pray. Yahshua [Jesus] went alone to what was perhaps, an arid and lonely place, a kind of quiet Promised Land to be alone with His Father. Please keep in mind that the Jews officially settled in the nicest part of the Promised Land, yet their provision of promise extended into the desert where Moses and Israel had walked on their exodus from Egypt. Where they lived is what they decided to possess. Yet, everywhere they walked in that desert belonged to them as part of their inheritance. (Deuteronomy 11:24; Joshua 1:3) This is rarely discussed and commonly overlooked. This Promised Land was not perfect. The people of Israel were to trust their Father as they turned the Promised Land into an oasis, and expanded that provision. But, they had to be willing to trust YHWH for provision and sustenance. Ultimately, the kings and people of Israel were not willing and did not truly love Father YHWH. The Bible is a valuable tool with insight into human nature and rare documentation of historical value. History does tend to repeat itself. The same response of human nature to YHWH continues today for the majority. Do you love Father and His provision enough to set yourself apart to Him? Have you possessed all of the promises that your Father YHWH has made to you? What promises have you decided to possess and what have you abandoned? (“YHWH’s Promise to His Elect“; “Judgment & Promise: The Almond Branch & YHWH’s People“; “Ambassadors for Messiah? Trust in His Promises“)

walking into the desertYour prayer time that you spend in your personal prayer closet is part of your Promised Land. You can either claim it or shame it. Relationship with your Heavenly Father through His Son and Holy Spirit is a perfect provision. Provision that is combined with obedience and real trust bears much fruit. Your personal trust ultimately determines what promises you receive, even whether you will be written in the Book of Life. Sometimes you feel as though you have been driven into the wilderness. Life is difficult or you aren’t where you feel you want to be. Other times, the wilderness can be a refuge – and so it was with Yahshua [Jesus]. The wilderness is often where Father YHWH’s provision really shines. (“YHWH’s Provision“; “Sleepless Nights: Trust for Provision“)

“But he went out and began to publish it so much, and to spread the word, that Yahshua [Jesus] was no longer able to openly enter the city, but was outside in lonely places. Yet they came to Him from all directions.” – Mark 1:45, ISR98

healingLike John the Baptizer, Yahshua [Jesus] was compelled to stay in some places in order to assure His safety. Jesus taught with authority, proving Himself as a true healer, becoming more and more popular as a result. He became a sensation, as volumes of people clamored about Him. As Yahshua [Jesus] confronted Satan and the darkness of the world, a certain level of persecution and controversy were inevitable, which seems indicated as His popularity grew. The authority of Elohim’s [‘God’, YHWH] Kingdom always threatens the insecure authority of the world. For a time, He stayed in the wilderness, where the people found Him and came to Him in the wilderness outside the towns and cities. This reality noted in Mark is not often discussed because most of modern Christianity today does not want insecure leaders to rise up against them. Instead, modern religion has become part of the system, so as not to intimidate or cause controversy. However, this is not Christianity at all, but another gospel that has become a lapdog of world leadership in order to secure a measure of worldly prosperity. (“Christians and the Dumbing Down of Sin“; “Christians, Tyranny & the Man of Lawlessness“; “The Christian Prepper: How Prepared Are You?“; “What is God’s Church?“; “Truth About the Modern Concept of Pastor“)

As a result, the name of YHWH is a name that is no longer truly recognized. The Son is confused with the Father. The Holy Spirit is played down or eliminated as much as possible. When all of this worldly confusion and misinformation is in play, it’s easy for Christians to forget that Elohim is the great I AM that hears and answers prayer. (“Break Down Walls of Darkness with Prayer“; “The Power of Prayer Depends On You“; “Prayer & Life in Messiah“; “Breakthrough Prayers“)

mark-of-YHWHs-SpiritAll too often Christians forget about the Elohim of prayer. Christians come to church to pray and sing. We work and take care of our families. We talk about ‘God’ and ‘prayer’ with little or nothing accomplished. Prayer is often forgotten. Faith and prayer have become clichés. For the sake of conversation, let’s call prayer a nice car that you own. You believe that the car exists. You can drive the car around and take a trip. But in this case, you never get in that car and do anything with it. You might occasionally make the case for the righteousness of YHWH, His Son or the Holy Spirit, but you never get in the car and drive it. You never take the trip and you don’t make the effort. (“The Challenge of Living in Righteousness“; “YHWH: The Choice to Stay Loyal“; “Listening to the Holy Spirit“)

prayer and contemplationAt church you hear ‘O Father in Heaven… blah, blah, blah.’ Prayer has become a past time with little meaning beyond a ritual, a cliché. Consider that Abraham was counted as righteous because He believed and acted on that belief. That’s the point. Today, you have enough. Food is good. You have a job. Life seems okay and normal in some sense. What you need, you supply yourself. When was the last time you really showed your trust through prayer? When was the last time you realized that YHWH Elohim provides everything, whether you work for it or not? But mostly, Christians miss the point. Your Father doesn’t desire that you seek for stuff. He wants intimate relationship that is deep and meaningful. When He whispers in your ear through the Holy Spirit, you hear and understand Him. You look to Him. You don’t ignore. You learn to hear Him and seek to fully understand what He says. You know and understand that only by His power and might will what you need truly happen. (“Prayer & Your Trust“; “Properly Directed Prayer is Potent“)

“Trust in YHWH, and do good; dwell in the earth, and feed on steadfastness. And delight yourself in YHWH, and let Him give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to YHWH, and trust in Him, and He does it. And He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your right-ruling as midday. Rest in YHWH, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man doing wicked devices.” – Psalm 37:3-7

robe-of-righteousness-smPart of a more intimate relationship with Him is learning for yourself what Elohim thinks about things – about what evil is and what righteousness is. The modern world doesn’t address His righteousness. Instead, the world has built a model of morality and justice. Religion has done the same. The righteousness of YHWH, the Son and the Holy Spirit is forgotten, no longer sought out. Instead, Christians become minions that seek after worldly justice and a parade of morality and ethics that looks a little like righteousness. Justice has become righteousness, but not the justice of the Father, but of the authority of the world. The leaders of men have placed themselves between the Father and every man, woman and child with the idea of leading you after them. That isn’t YHWH or His Kingdom. (“Wisdom & the Battle of Two Kingdoms“; “Disciple of Messiah: Wavering Between Two Opinions“; “Persisting Against Deception & Oppression During Tribulation“)

When your heart becomes righteous, you are delighted only in your Heavenly Father and becoming aligned with that, to come into full agreement with His righteousness rather than the righteousness of the religion of man. You come into full agreement with Him. You become full of the Holy Spirit and He acts through you. You seek only His righteousness and He brings that righteousness through the Holy Spirit in you. (“Understanding Sin“; “The Unpardonable Sin“)

real-job-searchThe land you live in is a direct reflection of the people living in it, just as you are a reflection of the soil of your heart. The provision of YHWH does not change. In Israel, He established debt laws and agricultural laws that were to be followed. The modern world laughs at such things. Nations and the people in them live in arid lands full of conflict. Technology and innovation only go so far. The flesh can only accomplish so much. All of this activity is a reflection of obedience or disobedience over time. What is sown will most certainly be reaped. (“The Abomination That Causes Desolation“; “What is Evil? The Jealousy of Nations & Skeptics“)

The truth is that what the world sells as a ‘promised land’ actually doesn’t acknowledge YHWH. It may refer to ‘God’ – it does not know Him. It sells Him short with marketing ideas, corporate profiteering, banking profits. It feeds off of other people, siphoning and stealing resources and labor from others. This ‘promised land’ of the world only knows fear, lack and deception. (“The Antichrist & the War on Reality“; “Strongholds & the Armor of YHWH“; “The Image & Mark of the Beast System“)

prayer to YHWHSo what are you praying for? Are you praying and seeking to be filled with the righteousness of YHWH? Are you willing to wait patiently, even silently? Do you simply go through the motions of life, or are you willing to have an intimate relationship with Him? Your willingness to spend time as you wait on Him is the foundation of your relationship. Abraham listened. Moses listened. Yahshua [Jesus] listened. Do you? Are you afraid of the answer you might receive, what He would say to you? There is no reason to fear Him, as Adam and Eve did in the garden. The Bible says that Enoch walked with Him. Do you? Each disciple must want Him always, not just when this is convenient or popular. He wants to walk hand in hand, side by side, with you leaning on Him. What comes to mind is my last years with my wife Ruth. As we would leave our home and descend the stairs and walk along the way, she leaned on me. Did she do so out of need or love? Your Father wants you to ask the same questions, to acknowledge that you need Him, to love Him, to lean on Him. More importantly, you are never promised another day. Make it count. (James 4:13-16; Proverbs 27:1; “Abiding in Trust“; “A Branch of the Vine through Trust“)

When you pray, what do you pray for? Do you pray to be filled with His righteousness? Do you lean on Him or on yourself or someone else? To walk with someone hand in hand, you cannot walk ahead of them or behind them. When one stumbles, one keeps the other stable – but your Father doesn’t stumble. Keeping you stable so that you do not stumble is what your Father wants from you. He wants to walk with you. Where you are at, even in a wilderness, doesn’t matter in the least. (“YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“; “Keeping Your Mind on What is Above“; “Abiding With YHWH in Quiet Places“)

He fed Elijah with ravens and made provision through a widow and her son in a parched land. He fed Moses and Israel with manna. These men had the same human nature you have. (1 Kings 17:4-7, 8-16; Exodus 16:4-31; John 6:31)

When you pray, set aside all bitterness and wrath, and forgive all. Refuse to be separated from Elohim. Make your personal decision to trust Him alone, to take His mark. You need the mark of Elohim, the mark of the Holy Spirit working through your heart and mind. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; “Is Your Forgiveness Real?“; “Forsaking Bitterness“; “Trusting in YHWH Instead of Princes“; “Christian: Your Basis of Trust“)

desert landscapeYHWH’s provision is best found in a wilderness, a place where you learn to lean on His provision. Leaning on Him is where peace resides. In a sense, a wilderness is in the mind, just as your willingness to lean on Him. (“Are You One of the Walking Dead?“)

How does such an arid land fulfill Your promise? “Israel was My perfect provision for My people. I wanted them to trust Me and they received from Me depending on their collective level of trust and obedience. The same is true today for My people. They can live in My Promised Land.”

Are you set apart to YHWH? (Romans 12:1-2; “Replacing Sin and Becoming Set Apart“; “Being Set Apart Makes You Aware of Sin“; “Scriptures – Qodesh, Being Set Apart“)

“For YAHWEH so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, HRB
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your righteousness. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. May it be as you have promised!
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
