The Obsession with Martyrdom

by John Greene

pagan sainthoodGroups of people within many cultures are inclined toward giving special honor, even worshiping those that have lost their lives in the fight for a noble cause. Many professed Christians also do the same. What does scripture say about those that lose their life while set apart in service to their Heavenly Father and His cause? (“Set Apart to His Purpose“; “Scriptures – Qodesh, Being Set Apart“)

Consider the case of Stephen when he was stoned by certain Jews. Did the disciples set him up in a place of special honor? There is no record of such a thing. When the ‘Apostle Paul’ was slain by the Romans, did the congregations set him up as a person of special note, ‘closer to God’ than they, or even move to worship him? Did they paint pictures of him and pray to him? There is no evidence of this. In fact, to do so would have challenged the very basis of scripture. (Acts 6:8-7:53; Matthew 5:11; 1 Peter 3:15, 4:14-16; Revelation 20:4; “Bible Truth About Death“; “Spiritual Growth or Spiritual Death“; “The Truth About Prayer“; “Break Down Walls of Darkness with Prayer“)

mark-of-YHWHs-SpiritDisciples are to give a defense for their expectation (not hope) for YHWH’s promises, for personal trust in Him. Christians are in a very real state of spiritual warfare as they walk out the truth of the Messiah. A firm witness (the origins of the word ‘martyr’) is exactly what a disciple is called to do. We are not expected to suffer greater than each one of us can bear, as each of us is to place our cares on the Father. (1 Corinthians 10:13; John 15:20; 2 Peter 2:9; Psalm 55:22, 68:19, 81:6-7; 1 Peter 5:6-8) Trials are a part of ‘Christian life’. Our love and service remains a pleasing aroma to Father YHWH, even as He helps to bear the burden. (2 Corinthians 2:15; Ephesians 5:2) Genuine disciples know what is coming! It’s not a complex issue unless you disbelieve. (“Replacing Sin and Becoming Set Apart“; “Being Set Apart Makes You Aware of Sin“; “Disciples: His Showbread Walking Out His Righteousness“; “Disciples in the Face of Persecution“; “Ambassadors for Messiah? Trust in His Promises“)

To die in determined purpose to your Heavenly Father is a privilege. As one that takes heed in being set apart through Messiah, your witness in life is purposed to be greater still. Early disciples dealt with persecution often enough, whether they stood in confrontation for righteousness or whether they fled from intense persecution. (Matthew 10:23; Acts 8:1, 9:25-30, 14:6, 17:10-14) The goal was to survive to give a personal account and expression of love for another day! (Matthew 10:39; “Following the Right Jesus“; “Christians, Tyranny & the Man of Lawlessness“; “The Antichrist & the War on Reality“; “Respecting Those You Love“; “YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“)

drinking alone addictionWhen a person finds real life through Yahshua [Jesus] Messiah, that person is to give up their old life of unrepentant sin and unbelief. When you ‘lose’ your life to Him, you find life! You are not required to die physically on earth to find the life that Elohim [‘God’, YHWH] gives. The life you find is through loving commitment to the purpose of Messiah and in your continual love for your Father YHWH, rather than pleasing men. (John 12:37-43; Galatians 1:10; Philippians 4:8-13; 1 Peter 2:24-25; Proverbs 29:25) Our sacrifice is primarily in life, and death as required. Each of us would do well to remember this each day, as we awake with Him in His Spirit [Dedicated, Set Apart Spirit]. (John 4:24; Matthew 4:10; 1 John 1:1-7; Ephesians 5:11; “The Importance of Practical Repentance“; “Foundation of Salvation“; “The Secret of Dedicated Disciples“; “The Unpardonable Sin“; “Disciples & the Occult of the World“)

“I exhort you truly brothers, through the compassion of Elohim, provide your bodies a living sacrifice, set apart, in full agreement to Elohim, your reasonable service. So do not be conformed to the age, but to the contrary, transformed in the renewing of your mind. You must test what is beneficial, even fully agreeable and complete to the Will of Elohim.” – Romans 12:1-2, direct translation

idolatryA disciple needs no intermediary to YHWH beyond Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah. He is the Way, just as a true disciple follows the Way. Statues, making idols of men and women, worshipping causes and purposes, and other physical ‘aids in worship’ are of the world of man, a world of sin apart from the Father and apart from your purpose as a genuine, a true disciple. To use idolatry as a ‘aid to worship’ is exactly the kind of profane conduct the world engages in, believing it to be truth. (Luke 4:8; Matthew 6:21, 46, 15:8-9; Mark 7:7-9; 1 Corinthians 10:14, 20; Romans 8:7; 2 Timothy 2:5; Exodus 20:3-5; Jeremiah 10:2-5; “The Idolatry Factor“; “The Basics of Strongholds & Idolatry“; “The Great Apostasy of Unrighteousness“; “Leaders & the Antichrist Spirit of Wisdom“)

“’These people draw near to Me with their mouth and respect Me with lips, but their heart is distant from Me. But in vanity they worship Me, teaching for instruction the commandments of men.’” – Matthew 15:8-9, direct translation

Instead, disciples are called to be set apart to Him through the counsel and power of His Spirit [Dedicated, Set Apart Spirit]. For it is nothing at all to ‘fear God’ and to serve other gods as the nations do. (2 Kings 17:33; Deuteronomy 29:17-18, 32:17; 1 Samuel 15:23; Colossians 3:3-6; Romans 6:23; James 4:3-5; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 6:16; “Recognizing the Counterfeit“; “Are You One of the Walking Dead?“; “Fighting a World of Fear & Delusion“)

Speaking of His disciples that love Him, Yahshua [Jesus] said:

“I do not pray that they are taken up from out of the world, but that they are protected from the wicked one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Set them apart through Your truth. Your Word is truth. As You set Me apart against the world, I set them apart against the world. And on their behalf I set Myself apart, so that they could also be set apart, given wholly to truth.” – John 17:15-19, direct translation

“For YAHWEH so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, HRB
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your righteousness. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. May it be as you have promised!
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The name Yahshua [Y’shua] is an original language name for Jesus.
He is often referred to simply as the Messiah or Master.
