1 John 1:5-10 – Some Ideas on the Meaning of Sin

by John Greene

“Then this is the message that was understood from His Son and declared to you, that Elohim is light, and in Him is absolutely no darkness. When you say that you are partners with Him, then walk in darkness, you lie and are not doing the truth. But when you walk in the light, as He is in the light, you are partners with one another, and the blood of Yahshua Messiah His Son washes away all your sin. Whenever you say that you possess no sin, you go astray and the truth is not in you. When you agree that you have sinned, He is trustworthy and righteous, in order that your sin is forgiven. Then you are washed, separated from all unrighteousness. When you say that you have not wandered from His track of righteousness, you call Him a liar and His Word is not in you.” – 1 John 1:5-10, P4T

path - whose track of righteousnessSome of the definitions of sin are to be mistaken, to be in error, to miss the mark, or to violate Elohim’s [‘God’, YHWH] law. The most often missed meaning of sin is to wander from His path of uprightness. This is more properly expressed as failing to walk on Elohim’s track of righteousness, to fail to be in agreement with Him. What so many religious people miss about the Torah and the Old Covenant is Elohim’s righteousness. Instead, they substitute ritual purity and their own sense of honor or self-esteem. This tragedy in thinking has been going on since His ancient nation was delivered from Egypt. (“Purity Starts Inside: A Lesson Through the Ages“; “The Struggle for Purity of Heart“; “Discernment the World Doesn’t Have“)

“Evil men do not understand the rule of righteousness. Ask of YHWH and understand all.” – Proverbs 28:5, P4T

agreement with YHWHSimply put, to be in agreement with our Heavenly Father is righteousness. He is the One that defines sin, the measurer of sin. To be outside of agreement with Him is sin. His track of righteousness is “magalah” – a firmly established track, a rampart, entrenchment or circular trench in battle, a hedge of protection – as the ruts or trenches made by the wheels of carts – the Way of life determined by our Father. (“Disciples: His Showbread Walking Out His Righteousness“; “Unrighteous Chaff Set to Destruction“; “Knowing Where You Stand on YHWH’s Threshing Floor“)

“YHWH restores my being, guiding me in the track of His righteousness, because of His authority. In this way, as I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I revere no evil. Surely, You are upon me with your rod of correction and branch of support. They cause me to repent to Your comfort. You prepare a table before the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My portion is satisfaction. Surely, favor and kindness will run after me all the days of my life. I will remain in the temple of YHWH for all the ages.” – Psalm 23:3-6, P4T

narrow-path-track-righteousnessThe good news is that none of us needs to guess what this is. He is looking for loyalty in a world that is increasingly lacking loyalty. His track of righteousness that He has outlined in scripture is His established standard. He is light in a world of darkness. His beloved walk in His light rather than choosing darkness. Your loyalty to Elohim [‘God’, YHWH] is expressed in your consistent walk of righteousness in His love, which He has made possible through the Set Apart Ruach [Holy Spirit]. His righteousness doesn’t change. It is eternal and established. Our Father’s righteousness isn’t the morality or ethics of the world, nor is it simply religious patterns of thinking. It isn’t the kind of thinking displayed by the Pharisees, who were full of the leaven of idolatry and minimized sin. They worshiped rules, ritual and personal appearance as righteousness. In this way, they pretended to be righteous, even representing themselves as the “righteousness of God,” just as many do in this day. (Matthew 16:24-26; 1 John 3:5-10; Ezekiel 18:20-32; Deuteronomy 28:1-68; “The Image & Mark of the Beast System“; “Leaven of the Pharisees; Leaven of the World“; “Understanding Sin“)

“Enter in through the narrow gate. Because wide is the gate and spacious the road, put to death through destruction, and many, by their reason, agree to enter. For narrow is the gate and troublesome is the road, the one that leads to life, and few agree to obtain it.“ – Matthew 7:13-14, P4T

1 John 3:4 reminds us that sin is lawlessness, or being apart from Elohim’s law, His righteousness. (1 John 5:17-21) Sin is anything that is contrary to what the Word of YHWH commands or forbids. The tendency is to corrupt righteousness with the knowledge of the world and the legalism of man, the agency of sin and Satan. Yahshua [Jesus] came to save those that are willing to listen, obey, and respond in love to His commands; to replace that imperfect provision of the old nation of Israel. He washes His beloved clean, through the Word and through His Ruach [Spirit]. “What is Washing by the Word?“; “Christians, Tyranny & the Man of Lawlessness“; “The Myth of Christian Governance“; “A Work of Renewal & Completion“)

Sin, regardless of how that sin is expressed, always has an effect. It separates from YHWH, the power of the Set Apart Ruach [Holy Spirit], as well as most earthly relationships. The original sin in the garden of Eden was destructive. Satan disguised his craft against YHWH as ‘knowledge,’ just as man has done through the ages. Since that moment, all of mankind, descended from the original couple has had the curse of death hanging over their heads; all because of separation from YHWH. (“Bible Truth About Death“; “Deception of Ages: How People Are Deceived“; “Being Renewed: Putting Down Deception“; “Filling Your Life With Truth Instead of Deception“)

Set Apart RuachYahshua [Jesus] is the remedy for the eternal judgment of sin that leads to death. The remedy starts with belief, trusting fully in the provision of YHWH through the Messiah while becoming renewed [regenerated] in character of being set apart to Him through His Ruach [Holy Spirit]. While all are subject to die physically in this age, the provision of the Messiah brings new life in YHWH’s Kingdom, beginning with the life that you live today. (John 8:40-44; 1 John 2:15-17; Ephesians 2:3)

“When we agree with righteousness [homologeo] as to our sins, He is trustworthy and right to forgive the sin, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.“ – 1 John 1:9,P4T

Bible knowledgeAcknowledging sin is the first step to turning aside from it. In this way, believers have the assurance YHWH can be counted on to keep His Word, through His justice and righteousness based on His standards. He has paid the price through His Son, which forgives the temporary insanity of unrighteousness and cleanses, all through active trust. The provision of Jesus is fully able to cleanse you completely from anything that doesn’t agree with YHWH’s character. Trust is the bedrock of righteous relationship with YHWH, with the power and guidance of the Set Apart or Dedicated Ruach or Spirit. (“The Great Apostasy of Unrighteousness“; “The Success of a Real Christian“; “Foundation of Salvation“; “Life Healing & Belief“; “Trusting in YHWH Instead of Princes“)

false religious valuesThe Greek word ‘kosmos’ does not refer to the universe as modern man often expresses. The kosmos of mankind is his own orderly arrangement, the decoration of a sinful community that is eternally doomed through man’s governance. This sinful humanity is a rebellion against YHWH: “all the world (kosmos) lies in the wicked one.” (1 John 5:19) Because of rebellious opposition to YHWH, the world values things apart from Him. This governance can tempt the believer that trusts in YHWH and His provision, to reject that provision and salvation by accepting the corruption of man’s world. As you are made new through the provision of the Father’s Ruach [Holy Spirit], you can begin to discern the corruption of mankind and put aside the corruption that you have previously accepted for His righteousness. (James 5:1-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Hebrews 6:1-20; “Breaking Strongholds of False Authority“; “The Role of Authority in Your Life“; “The Wheels of Ezekiel“; “Millenniums of Human Exploitation“; “Leadership & the Universal Authority of Messiah“)

Through the power of the Set Apart Ruach [Holy Spirit] and your personal agreement, you achieve spiritual growth, a closer relationship through prayer, personal study and witnessing to others. You don’t allow yourself to succumb continually to the temptation of the flesh. In scripture, ‘in the flesh’ is used to express the baseness of human nature when measured with Father YHWH’s righteousness. (Romans 8:7-10; Galatians 5:16, 19-20; Colossians 1:13) Through the Ruach or Spirit, disciples can possess ‘another nature.’ Two kingdoms fight for your soul or means of existence, even inside of your thoughts through the iniquity of sin. Yet, you and YHWH’s Spirit have the power to overcome, to be set apart, dedicated to Him through Ruach [Spirit] and for you to produce spiritual fruit of righteousness. This requires a moment-to-moment dependence, an always present trust in YHWH and His power that operates through you. (2 Peter 3:7; Matthew 22:29; John 14:15, 26; 1 John 4:1; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Hebrews 10:26; Romans 15:4)

“Either consider the tree beneficial, and its fruit beneficial, or consider the tree rotten, and its fruit rotten. For a tree is known by its fruit.” – Matthew 12:33, P4T

“For YAHWEH so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, HRB
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your righteousness. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. May it be as you have promised!
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The name Yahshua [Y’shua] is an original language name for Jesus.
He is often referred to simply as the Messiah or Master.
