2 John – Love & Truth During Persecution

Compared to 1 John and many other Bible books, on the surface, 2 John hardly seems to be remarkable in any way, but more of an afterthought than a real message. But this is hardly the case. 2 John appears to be coded somewhat, but this is because of reality of Roman persecution in the first century. The reality of the assembly of the Yahshua the Messiah is a large family of truth, a family that knows Elohim’s [‘God’, YHWH] truth, the truth that lives within the Spirit and into Elohim’s Sovereignty [Kingdom]. (“Filling Your Life With Truth Instead of Deception“; “Wisdom & the Battle of Two Kingdoms“; “Real Love Resides in Righteousness“; “Love: Departing from Death to Life“)

“To the elder, the chosen lady and those children that I love in truth, and not myself alone, but even all knowing the truth, through the truth that lives in us and will be joined with us into the age. May favor, tender compassion and well-being be in your midst from Father Elohim, and from Master Yahshua Messiah, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.” – 2 John 1-3, P4T

bible-trust-YHWH-1A few have suggested that in 2 John, that John was writing to Mary, the mother of Yahshua [Jesus] and her family. However, less fanciful indications are that John was writing to an elder of an assembly that met in a home, the ekklesia or assembly, personified as the bride of Messiah. In that day, disciples [Christians] who engaged in worship and study often met together in smaller groups and homes as they learned to walk out truth in their lives. Further, John indicates that he is new to this group that he is writing to, based on what he wrote in verse 4:

“I rejoice abundantly because of coming to know of your children walking the Way in truth, just as we have seized upon the command from the Father.” – 2 John 4, P4T

narrow-path-track-righteousnessStarting with verse 5, John repeats some of the ideas that he carried forward in 1 John. John focused on the importance of the truth, how this truth is practiced and protected. This revealed truth of righteousness is what Yahshua [Jesus] revealed in His earthly ministry, just as John emphasized truth and love in his personal ministry. (1 John 3:18; 2 John 1, 3; 3 John 3) The foundation of real love is truth through Elohim’s righteousness, which comes to us through Yahshua [Jesus] and the Set Apart Ruach [‘Holy Spirit’]. To begin with love, truth in righteousness is essential rather than falsehood and fables of the world. (“YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“; “Walking the Track of Righteousness“; “Living as Partners & Friends in Messiah Through Provision“)

“And now I entreat you lady, not as one writing a new kind of command to you, but what we have had from the beginning, that is, loving one another. Then this is love, that we walk the Way according to His commands. This is the command with the purpose that you walk in it, just as has been heard from the beginning. Because many deceivers are coming into the world that do not agree Yahshua Messiah has come in body. These are deceivers and antimessiahs.” – 2 John 5-7, P4T

church deceptionTelling the truth brings disciples into conflict with those people that benefit from deception and delusion. Many have tried to supplant or replace the truth of YHWH with their own message. A popular message of that time in the first century was that Yahshua [Jesus] the Messiah did not come in the body, but only in the Spirit, as a spirit. This was widely taught by people known as gnostics, and likely others as well. (“Unrighteous Chaff Set To Destruction“; “Deceptions of Ages: How People are Deceived“; “The Art of Self-Deception“)

“Discern for yourselves, so that you do not lose what you have labored for, but receive your complete reward. Each one of us that abandons trust, not continuing in the instruction of Messiah, does not possess Elohim. The one that continues in the instruction of Messiah possesses even the Father and the Son. Anyone coming to you and not bearing this instruction, do not receive this one into your family, and do not speak any welcome to this one, because anyone speaking a welcome to this one shares in their wicked deeds.” – 2 John 8-11, P4T

discern both good and evilOur Heavenly Father wants disciples to discern for themselves through the Spirit so that they can be completed in His love. The truth is that when a disciple refuses to bear the instruction of the Messiah, this one does not have Father, Son or Holy Spirit. John warns about even speaking a welcome to anyone that is operating as an antichrist. This is news worth remembering. Anyone that you welcome into your life is subject to corrupt and taint it, just as well as to bless or favor it. That is why you need discernment through the Set Apart Ruach [‘Holy Spirit’]. (“Disciples: His Showbread Walking Out His Righteousness“; “The Antichrist & the War on Reality“; “Being Renewed: Putting Down Deception“; “Persisting Against Deception & Oppression During Tribulation“)

“I have much to write to you, but am not willing with paper and ink. Yet, I expect to come to you and speak face to face in order that our joy may be fulfilled. The children of your chosen sister welcome you. May it be so.” – 2 John 12-13, P4T

boiling in oilWhy would John hesitate to continue in sharing what could have been more important and detailed matters? Some things are better said in person, but this reasoning is unlikely to be the cause of John’s carefulness in sharing more. While the historical record is spotty, John had a record of living under severe persecution under the Romans, including being boiled in oil, being forced to drink poison and being imprisoned on Patmos. (John 2:23-25; Revelation 1:9) His message appears to be coded and non-specific to those he was addressing, suggesting that he was dealing with persecution and the potential of being watched by the Romans and their agents. If his message was intercepted, he did want the assembly of believers to be exposed. (“Leaders & the Antichrist Spirit of Wisdom“; “Incentives of Deception“; “Disciples in the Face of Persecution“)

John didn’t give up, nor did he find retirement in service to Elohim as a choice, even though he lived much longer than most apostles and teachers did in that day. Youth is not necessarily better or stronger in serving Elohim. Love, trust and the regeneration of truth is required, regardless of where you find yourself in life. In prosperous times and during times of persecution, each disciple needs remember the importance of love in living out our Father’s righteousness through the Ruach [Spirit]. (“Loving the World & Rejecting the Messiah“; “Understanding Sin“; “Discernment the World Doesn’t Have“)

“For YAHWEH so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, HRB
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your righteousness. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. May it be as you have promised!
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The name Yahshua [Y’shua] is an original language name for Jesus.
He is often referred to simply as the Messiah or Master.
