Properly Directed Prayer is Potent

by John Greene

“Ask and power to you. Seek and find. Knock and it will open to you. For all that ask take, and seek find, and knock, open up.” – Matthew 7:7-8, direct translation

free from captivityMany people use prayer as a last resort, an escape. They see prayer as a last chance, when “all hope is gone.” Christians that deny prayer are failing a major part of their walk with the Father [Elohim, YHWH, ‘God’]. Truth be told, prayer should be as normal as breathing! (“Break Down Walls of Darkness with Prayer“; “YHWH’s Track of Righteousness“; “YHWH’s Prayer Shawl of Protection“; “Which Shepherd Do You Believe?“)

jesus-prayerMany overlook the part that prayer played in the life of Yahshua [Jesus]. He spent a lot of time in prayer, a direct line of communication to His Heavenly Father. Even He needed the encouragement, the strength to persevere. Even His disciples saw the importance of prayer when they asked Him to teach them to pray. (Luke 11:1) They did not ask Him to teach them how to heal the sick or perform miracles. They came to understand from His example that great expressions of power came from the relationship that Yahshua [Jesus] had with His Father. (“A Pattern of Prayer“; “Your Heavenly Father & Agreement in Prayer“; “Abiding With YHWH in Quiet Places“)

Yahshua [Jesus] spoke clearly about the power of prayer.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he shall do also. And greater works than these he shall do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My Name, that I shall do, in order that the Father might be esteemed in the Son. ” – John 14:12-13, ISR98

prayer-closet-tallit-IsraelThe disciples knew that to many, including the Pharisees, prayer was a form of devotion, even show for attention. To Messiah, prayer was a force, a divine act. The disciples saw things change as a result of His prayer as they noticed how much He prayed. They came to realize the truth of prayer. In the same way, through prayer, you can and will effect change in your life and lives of others. (“A Branch of the Vine through Trust“; “Prayer: A Large Act for YHWH’s Dedicated“)

The Privilege of Prayer

“For when you pray, do not come to be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand praying in the assembly and in the corners of the square, that in this manner they may shine before men. I say truly to you, keep away from their reward.” – Matthew 6:5, direct translation

prayerMany folks can see that prayer is a good thing. Even so, there is plenty of confusion about what prayer is and how it works.  To some, prayer is closed eyes, bended knees or the raised hand. You may think of prayer a specific activity confined to a special time and place. That is not the truth of prayer! Your lifestyle is prayer grounded in the sincere desire of your open heart. (“Refining Your Heart“; “Prayer & Life in Messiah“)

“For the Word of Elohim is living, and working, and sharper than any two-edged sword, cutting through even to the dividing of being and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all are naked and laid bare before the eyes of Him with whom is our account.  Therefore, since we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Yahshua the Son of Elohim, let us hold fast our confession.  For we do not have a High Priest unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who was tried in all respects as we are, apart from sin. Therefore, let us come boldly to the throne of favour, in order to receive compassion, and find favour for timely help.” – Hebrews 4:12-16, ISR98

Prayer isn’t a purchase order to get what you want, but a level of communication, a joining of wills that goes far beyond a list of wants. In prayer, your will becomes one with YHWH’s Will as you learn to seek His Will. This joining in prayer is a special relationship. (“How to Receive the Holy Spirit“; “Listening to the Holy Spirit“)

prayer-covering-tallit-1When Yahshua [Jesus] taught His disciples to pray, He gave them the outline of prayer, a sample prayer to build personal prayer on.  Prayer is intimate. He started prayer with “Our Father,” grounded in a personal expression of trust. He actually used the Aramaic word “Abba,” which actually translates to Papa or Daddy. (“Are You an Effective Listener? Listening & Your Relationships“; “Shining Love Toward Others in Righteousness“)

Giving Praise

Effective prayer springs from the heart, a heart of thanksgiving! Praise is grounded in love. By belief and through trust, you accept that you have accomplished, what you have prayed for. Praise prevents you from focusing exclusively on yourself as your realize that YHWH is the only answer to your prayers. You are often involved in the answer to your prayers as He gives you strength, wisdom and the means to accomplish His Will. The faithful disciple makes praise a daily part of life and a foundation of personal strength. (“Praise Through Times of Trouble“; “Hindered Prayer in Marriage“)

Patient Submission

baptism-ChristWhen your will joins with the Will of YHWH, your will falls into line with His. This means a disciple asks based on the Will of Elohim through fellowship with Messiah and the Holy Spirit [Dedicated, Set Apart Spirit]. Then, you have the excitement of seeing how He answers your requests and provides your needs. Don’t give up. Elohim loves you! (“Video – Adoration, Praise YHWH For What He Has Done“)

Not all Christians really understand the hold that Satan has on the world. He has a hold on the kingdoms of the world and rooted strongholds grounded in the people on earth. Because of earthly opposition to His Will, some see YHWH as a reluctant provider, someone to beg or threaten, in order to get what they want. This distorted view brings resentment and anger instead of trust and love. (“Living in an Apostate World“; “The Magi of this Age“; “Trust YHWH, Not World Leaders“)

“And He said to them, ‘Who of you shall have a friend, and will come to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves. For a friend of mine arrived to me from a journey, and I do not have what I may set before him.’ And answering from within that one may say, ‘Do not cause me troubles. The door has already been shut, and my children are in bed with me. I cannot rise up to give to you.’ I say to you, even if rising up he will not give to him because he is a friend, yet because of his urgent insisting, rising up he will give him as many as he needs.‘” – Luke 11:5-8, HRB

How much better is YHWH, your Heavenly Father than this “friend.” Persistence and intercessory prayer is necessary because Satan and his agents are the gods [mighty ones] of the world. (1 Corinthians 2:14; 2 Corinthians 4:3-4)

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” – Luke 11:9-13, NKJV

Part of prayer is understanding that your Heavenly Father really seeks to help. He will never forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:8; 1 Samuel 12:22; Psalms 37:25; Hebrews 13:5)

Petition for Protection

hedge-of-protectionSatan always lurks about, seeking anyone that he can destroy. He seeks to destroy in a spiritual battle where he believes that he must be victorious. (John  8:44; 10:10; 17:14-15; 1 Peter 5:8-9; 1 Thessalonians 2:18) Yahshua [Jesus] came to counteract that effect. (Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14; 1 John 3:8; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5) You need resist Satan and he will flee from you. (Luke 4:1-13; James 4:7; “Overcoming Satanic Attack“)

One day, Messiah looked at Peter and said “Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.” Peter had seen the tragedy of those caught in the clutches of the devil. Panic may have rose up in his thoughts as he considered the possibility. “But I have prayed for you, that your belief should not fail. And when you have turned, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32) When your Savior prays for you, great power will sustain you. (“YHWH’s Threshing Floor“; “Knowing Where You Stand on YHWH’s Threshing Floor“)

Fast for Power and Cleansing

“And when you fast, do not be sad-faced like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces so that they appear to be fasting to men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. ” – Matthew 6:16, ISR98

Often, we give more attention to the care of our bodies than the needs of the soul. All humans are compelled by powers of the body, such as hunger or thirst. The man that is a slave to the body is never free from them. Fasting focuses on the inner man and purposes greater than self. Fasting purifies, cleanses, keeping your body under subjection. (“Joy through Prayer and Fasting“)

“I exhort you truly brothers, through the compassion of Elohim, provide your bodies a living sacrifice, set apart, in full agreement to Elohim, your reasonable service. So do not be conformed to the age, but to the contrary, transformed in the renewing of your mind. You must test what is beneficial, even fully agreeable and complete to the Will of Elohim.” – Romans 12:1-2, direct translation

Fasting helps your mind and heart to refocus from the body onto the Will of YHWH, part of breaking fleshly strongholds while focusing on Messiah and allowing the Holy Spirit to work in you.

“But remember this: the one sowing sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one sowing generously will also reap generously. Each one as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or out of necessity, for YAHWEH loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, HRB

Withholding from others deprives you of great blessing. When you lock up your life in selfishness, you limit the power of Elohim in your life. (“Giving to Others While Trusting in YHWH for Your Needs“; “Love Promotes Healthy Giving“)

Blocks to Elohim’s Favor and Blessing

breakingstrongholds7-300x300“But we know that YAHWEH does not hear sinful ones, but if anyone is Elohim fearing, and does His will, He hears that one.” – John 9:31, HRB

If you are praying and feel nothing is happening, you may have a short circuit, a stronghold that is blocking the power of Elohim in your life.

“If I had regarded iniquity in my heart, YAHWEH would not have heard.” – Psalms 66:18, HRB

One common problem is that destructive emotions hinder your spiritual walk through the provision of Messiah and Holy Spirit. The root of these emotions is fear. More details are covered by “The Miracle of the New Man.”

The lack of discernment in your life can block Elohim’s blessings as well. Discernment and full acceptance of Elohim’s love heals the heart and the expression of your heart. Both healing and deliverance from strongholds are grounded in purification through repentance and the refusal to walk in the past. You must walk away from:

Habitual Sin

Lack of forgiveness

Lack of honesty

Lack of Bible understanding

Anger and its counterparts

Personal sin

Family sin that impacts you

Demanding Elohim based on your terms

Demanding miracles, sign and wonders

Looking to man instead of YHWH

A closed heart

All of these things can hinder your prayers, blocking what you pray for. Changes need to be made in your heart and reflected in your lifestyle.

You can be a disciple and still be in captivity to strongholds that hold you back. Curses always have roots or causes. (Proverbs 26:2; “Strongholds & the Armor of YHWH“; “Understanding Sin“)

Loving-Kindness of Elohim

“And He said to me, ‘My favor is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, then, I shall rather boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Messiah rests on me.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9

While YHWH’s loving-kindness [grace] is sufficient, His greater favor can be lived in your life today. (“Cultivating YHWH’s Grace as You Seek Truthx“; “The Grace of YHWH’s Vineyard“)

“And my word and my preaching were not with persuasive words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, in order that your belief should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of Elohim.” – 1 Corinthians 2:4-5, ISR98

giving favorably through graceElohim’s loving-kindness through the power of the Holy Spirit removes many difficult problems entirely from your life. You can walk in His favor continually and indefinitely as you abide in Him. (Romans 8:16; John 16:13) Sustaining His provision of grace is Elohim’s provision of love at all times, including any problem that eludes solution. (Acts 19:11-12; Acts 28:8-9) YHWH’s desire is that His people receive more than the bare minimum in life. (“A Matter of Grace“; “Scriptures – Qodesh, Being Set Apart“)

“But as it has been written, “Eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, nor have entered into the heart of man what Elohim has prepared for those who love Him.” – 2 Corinthians 2:9, ISR98

praise-prayerPrayer is the divine connection to YHWH that changes your life and the lives of others as well. (Psalm 46:10) As you learn to walk in spiritual maturity, (John 13:34-35; Acts 5:32; Romans 5:5; 1 John 4:8; 1 Corinthians 13:11) you will continue to develop discernment and a more rewarding walk with Elohim. (Hosea 4:6; Luke 12:57; John 7:24; 1 Corinthians 2:15; 1 Thessalonians 5:21; 2 Corinthians 2:11; 10:7; “Discernment: Having an Ear to Deeper Understanding“; “Being Set Apart Makes You Aware of Sin“)

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your righteousness. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
