Prayer Basics of the Messiah

by John and Ruth Greene

genuine-articleIntercessory prayer is about praying for others, loving them and serving them as Yahshua [Jesus], our Messiah did. Agreement in prayer is about praying with others or for the same purpose. Prayer also adds strength and mutual encouragement when fighting spirits of darkness. Yahshua [Jesus] laid the foundation for disciples to imitate. Praying is about service and love, carrying personal needs and concerns to Elohim [‘God’, YHWH] in prayer knowing that He hears us and answers. There is great power in prayer and greater power in numbers when prayer is in agreement. (“Prayer & Life iin Messiah“; “Prayer: The Bottom Line“; “Properly Directed Prayer is Potent“; “Jeremiah’s Prayer and You“)

“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning any matter that they ask, it shall be done for them by My Father in the heavens. For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there I am in their midst.” – Matthew 18:19-20, ISR98

Bible knowledgeWe firmly believe that there is no substitute for the Bible. Nothing says it better than than scripture, which has great effect when used in prayer. The words of Yahshua [Jesus] are the best guide in your prayer life. We have taken the words of what He said about love and forgiveness, the essence of prayer, and put it here for you to consider for yourself. If you are willing to read this and ponder what the Savior tells us here, working to apply it the best you can, you are ready to intercede in prayer for someone else. Love in His Holy Spirit [Dedicated, Set Apart Spirit] and the power of the Holy Spirit is what keeps every disciple grounded in Messiah. Love is what keeps the spirit of competition and jealousy out of prayer as we pray together in love without excessive concern for self. (Matthew 6:7; “Break Down Walls of Darkness with Prayer“; “The Power of Prayer Depends On You“; “Breakthrough Prayer Menu“)

We pray that this blesses you and enables the Holy Spirit to work through you as you bless others.

bible-markerOur marching orders from Yahshua [Jesus]:

He was answering a question from the scribes…

“And Yahshua answered him, ‘The first of all the commandments is: Hear Israel. YAHWEH our Elohim is YAHWEH united, and you shall love YAHWEH your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is not another commandment greater than these. ” – Mark 12:29-31, HRB (Deuteronomy 6:4-5)

bible-markerYahshua [Jesus] reminds us not to exalt ourselves when praying:

“And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the open streets so that they may be seen of men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, enter into your room and shutting your door, pray to your Father in secret. And your Father seeing in secret will repay you in the open.” – Matthew 6:5-6, HRB

“Then He said to them in His teaching, ‘Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.'” – Mark 12:38-40, NKJV

bible-markerHe also gave us a “model or sample prayer.”

“This, then, is the way you should pray: ‘Our Father who is in the heavens, let Your Name be set-apart, let Your reign come, let Your desire be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into trial, but deliver us from the wicked one – because Yours is the reign and the power and the esteem, forever.'” – Matthew 6:9-13, ISR98

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” – Matthew 6:14-15 NKJV

This model prayer is the basis, an example of prayer. However, Elohim seeks your heart and your expression of personal trust outside of repetitive ritual prayer. He seeks a clean heart, free from the a heart hardened with the lack of forgiveness.

bible-markerThe words of Yahshua [Jesus] tell us about love:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?” – Matthew 5:43-46, NKJV

Conclusion by cultivating verses 43 through 47 in your life and as a result of the Holy Spirit:

“It will come to be that you are truly complete, just as your Father that is in heaven is complete.” – Matthew 5:48, direct translation

bible-markerOther helpful words Yahshua [Jesus] tells us about love. Love is a decision…

“No one is able to serve two masters, for either he shall hate the one and love the other, or else he shall cleave to the one and despise the other. You are not able to serve Elohim and mammon. – Matthew 6:24, ISR98

“No servant is able to serve two masters, for either he shall hate the one and love the other, or else he shall cling to the one and despise the other. You are not able to serve Elohim and mammon.” – Luke 16:13, ISR98

bible-markerHe also tells us about the greatest commandments…

“Then Yahshua spoke to the crowd and to His disciples, saying, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees have sat down on Moses’ seat. Then all things, whatever he (Moses) tells you to keep, keep and do. But do not do according to their (Scribes & Pharisees) works, for they talk, and do not do. For they bind heavy and hard to bear burdens, and lay them on the shoulders of men, but they do not desire to move them with their finger. And they do all their works to be seen by men. And they widen their tefillin and lengthen the tekhelet (blue string in the tassel) of their robes. And they love the chief places at festivals and the chief seats at the synagogue. And the greetings in the markets, and to be called by men, ‘Rabboni, Rabboni.’ But do not you be called Rabboni (my great one) for One is your Great One, the Messiah, and you are all brothers. And call no one your father on earth, for One is your Father, the One in Heaven. Nor be called master, for One is your Master, the Messiah. But he who is greater of you, let him be your servant.'” – Matthew 23:1-11, HRB

“Beware of the scribes, those desiring to walk about in long robes, and liking greetings in the markets, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at banquets. Those who devour the houses of widows with the pretense of prolonging their prayers, they will receive a greater judgment. – Luke 20:46-47, HRB

Yahshua [Jesus] knew the Pharisees and scribes were very good at speaking to legal aspects of the law covenant, even speaking about tithing to the smallest detail and yet could not comprehend or “passed beside”, literally neglecting proper judgment and the love of YHWH. The original language indicates that judgment by divine law, the love of Elohim should be done and not forgotten. The implication is that these Jewish leaders were so legalistic, that they could not possibly follow their own legalism or rules. We never want to make this same mistake in judgment and miss Elohim. (“Woes of the Hypocrites“)

“But woe to you Pharisees, because you tithe mint and dill and every herb, and you pass over justice and the love of Elohim. Now these things were necessary for you to have done, while not forsaking these other things.” – Luke 11:42, HRB

Here, Yahshua [Jesus] speaks to the need to listen to Him and believe. Everlasting life is through Him and not through man, his wisdom or preference…

“But I have the greater witness than John’s, for the works which the Father has given Me, that I should finish them, the works which I do, themselves, witness concerning Me, that the Father has sent Me. And the Father, the One sending Me, has Himself borne witness concerning Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor have you seen His appearance. And His Word does not dwell in you because you do not believe in Him whom He sent. You search the Scriptures, for you think in them you have everlasting life. And they are the ones witnessing concerning Me. And you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. I do not receive glory from men; but I have known you, that you do not have the love of YAHWEH in yourselves. I have come in the name of My Father, and you do not receive Me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive that one.” – John 5:36-43, HRB

bible-markerYahshua [Jesus] tells it like it is…

“Then Yahshua said to them, ‘If YAHWEH were your Father, you would love Me, for I went forth and have come from YAHWEH. For I have not come from Myself, but that One sent Me.'” – John 8:42, HRB

“For this reason My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life, that I may take it up again. No man takes it from Me but I lay it down by My own will. For I have authority to lay it down and I have authority to take it up again, for this commandment I have received from my Father.” – John 10:17-18, HRB

Yahshua [Jesus] tells us how we recognize real disciples or followers of Messiah. This can be very important for intercessory prayer, especially when we pray in agreement.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” – John 13:34-35, NKJV

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he shall do also. And greater works than these he shall do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My Name, that I shall do, in order that the Father might be esteemed in the Son. If you ask whatever in My Name, I shall do it. ” – John 14:12-14, ISR98

“He that has My commandments and keeps them, it is that one who loves Me; and the one that loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I shall love him and will reveal Myself to him. Judas said to Him (not the Iscariot) Master, what has happened that You are about to reveal Yourself to us and not at all to the world? Yahshua answered and said to him, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My Word, and My Father shall love him. And We will come to him and will make a dwelling place with him. The one who does not love Me does not keep My Words. And the Word which you hear is not Mine but of the Father who sent Me.” – John 14:21-24, HRB

bible-markerMay we be so committed to Our Father as Yahshua [Jesus]…

“But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.” – John 14:31, NKJV

By resting or abiding in Elohim, we know that He stands for us and is exalted by our fruit as we stand for Him…

“In this My Father is esteemed, that you bear much fruit, and you shall be My taught ones. As the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Stay in My love. If you guard My commands, you shall stay in My love, even as I have guarded My Father’s commands and stay in His love. These words I have spoken to you, so that My joy might be in you, and that your joy might be complete. This is My command, that you love one another, as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this: that one should lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, for all teachings which I heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in My Name He might give you. These words I command you, so that you love one another.” – John 15:8-17, ISR98

bible-markerWe are Elohim’s children, chosen by Him to do His Will instead of the will of the dark kingdom.

“Righteous Father, indeed the world did not know You, but I knew You; and these have known that You sent Me. And I made known Your name to them, and will make it known, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.” – John 17:25-26, HRB

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.” – John 15:18-19, HRB

bible-markerJames says that prayer and forgiveness is cleansing and healing…

“Does anyone suffer ill among you? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him praise in song. Is any among you sick? Let him call the elders of the Congregation, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of our Master. And the prayer of faith will heal those being sick, and our Master will raise him up. And if he may have committed sins, it will be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man is powerful.” – James 5:13-16, HRB

bible-markerThe apostle Paul says that we must have forgiveness and brotherly love…

“And I, Paul, call on you through the meekness and gentleness of Messiah (I, who indeed to look upon, am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you); I beseech you not to be troubled, when I arrive, by the things which I hope to carry out; for it is my purpose to scorn those men who regard us as if we lived after the flesh.

For though we do live an earthly life, yet we do not serve worldly things; for the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly, but of the power of YAHWEH to the demolition of strongholds, casting down imaginations and every false thing lifting up itself against the knowledge of Elohim, and bringing into captivity every thought into the obedience of Messiah, and we are prepared to seek vengeance on those who are disobedient, whenever your obedience is fulfilled.

Do you judge according to outward appearance? If anyone thinks of himself to belong to Messiah, let him think this again as to himself, that as he is of Messiah, so we also belong to Messiah. For even if I also somewhat more fully should boast about our authority which our Master has given me, I should not be ashamed, for He has given it to us for your building up and not for your destruction. But I am hesitant, lest I seem as if I were trying to frighten you by my letter. Because, there are men who say that ‘his letters are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech foolish.'” – 2 Corinthians 10:1-10, HRB

bible-markerPrayer and forgiveness work together for the purpose of Messiah…

“Because of this I say to you, whatever you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them. And whenever you stand praying, if you hold whatever against anyone, forgive, so that your Father in the heavens shall also forgive you your trespasses.” – Mark 11:24-25, ISR98

bible-markerElohim wants us to be pure in spirit and mind. As He forgives us, we must forgive others…

“Let not any evil word go out from your mouth, but words that are good and useful for edification that it may impart a blessing to those who hear them. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of YAHWEH, by whom you were sealed to the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and anger, and wrath, and tumult, and evil speaking be put away from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as YAHWEH has forgiven us through Messiah.” – Ephesians 4:29-32, HRB

When you have a grievance, you must clear it up by taking that grievance to your brother or sister and forgiving it. This will avoid blocking the effectiveness of your prayer.

“Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.” – Luke 17:3, NKJV

“For YHWH so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16, RNKJV
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for sending the Messiah, your only begotten Son to be my Savior. I believe in Him and have made this belief the center of my life. Because of this, by faith I have everlasting life! Thank you! I repent of my sins and of my past, freely admitting that I have fallen short of Your righteousness. I look fully forward to you in my life and commit my life to You. Thank You YHWH, my Heavenly Father for setting me free in the name of your Son Yahshua [Jesus]. Amen.
genuine-articleYou will never enjoy true freedom through the Messiah and power of the Holy Spirit unless you read and absorb the Bible in prayer and trust. You will never know this freedom until you experience it for yourself. Get to know your Heavenly Father, His Son and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life. The Holy Spirit is your teacher, your Holy Counselor that lives in you to help you learn about the truth of YHWH and His spiritual gifts.
Satan does not want you to have the excellence of YHWH in your life. People pray for protection and want to be taken care of, but often do little in growing close to Him. The world, your husband, your wife, your family, your government do not build your trust in YHWH or free you from spiritual bondage. Your church or your pastor cannot save you. Education, power and money will not free you, but only the Word of your Heavenly Father. Salvation is a daily walk, an act of love for yourself and for those around you, not a one-time event that centers only on you. Make the Word of YHWH your own, your very life!
YHWH is Yahweh, the covenant name of your Heavenly Father.
The names Yahshua and Yahushua are original language names for Jesus,
He is often referred simply as the Messiah or Master.
